Which player would you bring back from retirement to play for your team?

To play for your team... Has to be at their current age. With 6 weeks to get back in shape.

A 37 year old Carrick would surely be a decent player to play 15-20 games for United. Would he be worse than Fred?

I still think a 44 year old Paul Scholes back in fighting shape would be good enough to play Premier League football.

Xavi is 39 and never relied on pace. Could do something behind Pogba

I’m focused on CMs as it’s Uniteds weak spot. Feel free to be more expansive

Yeah, none of them would be close to being good enough to play in the PL at their ages even if you give them 3 months to get into shape. The PL being physical is a cliché for a reason and it's only gotten more so with every season.

Is this a joke?....Scholes at the age of 44 still competitive enough to play in midfield in the premiership.

When I clicked on this thread I was debating between Cantona to replace Lingard or Robson to replace McTominay, both offer leadership as well, but then I saw the OP, no offense but those players all retired for a reason, they knew they were past it.

Scholes was showing his age in the second season of his comeback if I recall. He was very slow.

I reckon Lahm might be okay still.

Exactly what Man Utd 19-20 needs to actually challenge for the PL title: a goal-scoring machine. Defense seems solid, midfield + attack is decent enough, but we are creating few chances so we need a killer up there to score everything, from the sitters to the more difficult goals (and penalties). He's 40-something, but he would just need to be up there and score the assists.

Or Beckham (seemed fit this summer during the SAF Legends game). Replace Lingard with Beckham.

The man has heart problems, how would this be a good idea?

Anyway my pick would be Beckham

Constantly at the STD clinic.
I would get Scholes back and give him is own special role. Basically someone who plays in the position of a sweeper defender but only has attacking duties. Pinged balls all day long

Arjen Robben would still be better than most wingers in the world.

Berbatov to hold the ball up front. He can still play for about 20 to 30 minutes. The same with RVP too I guess.

So many possibilities strictly for United.

Beckham or Kanchelskis on the right wing.
Rio, Stam or Vidic to partner Maguire.
Carrick or Scholes in midfield.
Evra or Irwin at left back.
Ruud at center forward.

Berbatov. He is in incredible shape nowadays, probably better than when he was playing. He wasn’t one to rely on pace anyway so he might be the best option who covers a need and can actually physically still go.

Shaw may be a bit big boned, but I'm not sure six weeks of laps would push a 54-year old Irwin above him in the pecking order.

Beckham can still do a good job for us on the right, he will deliver quality cross and set piece.

I swear, half of the posters haven't even read the OP.

Probably Beckham for me with Scholes close second - the former is still in fantastic shape and he adds more with his set pieces.

Beyond Beckham, who I think is probably the obvious answer, I'd be tempted to bring back Evra for left-back cover and leadership. He's only recently retired, so probably isn't that out of touch. Also wouldn't bet against Stam doing a good job alongside Maguire, especially against teams whose forwards rely on pace and physicality.

Lahm is the one who sprung to mind. Retired pretty young and was still playing at a good level when he went out.

I thought yesterday already that Bayern should bring back Schweinsteiger for a year or two.

Lahm and Robben would still perform on WC level if given some time though.

Yes, please. A C/DM whose legs are gone to cover for a side that has semi functioning positional play but wants to dominate games regardless. Just what Kovac needs ;)

Ask again in 50 years and it'd probably still be the same

As @do.ob implies, Schweinsteiger would be a horrendous choice. In all my years of going to Old Trafford, Schweinsteiger ranks as one of the worst midfielders I've seen play for us, and he was 4/5 years younger then!

Phil Neville and Phil Jones were better CMs for us than ol' Bastian.

Bobby Charlton as an impact player to come and give us a bit more energy and mobility at no10 than Mata currently provides.

Though to be serious Beckham or Robben could be useful off the bench.

Edwin van der Sar - these days he would be a liability between the sticks. However, whilst here, if he could teach Woodward how to run a football club, then it might just be worth it.
