Why don't the Irish support their local teams?

The Green flag with the Harp was the Leinster Flag and adopted by some as a symbol of Ireland, but the Blue flag was regarded as the official unofficial flag of Ireland. Welcome to Irish politics.

And if you were right that would still be green and gold so inconclusive, but the more widely used flag was blue with a gold harp, so with that info you'll be able to argue your point better when the next nutter enters your crosshairs.

The Blue one is still used as a presidential flag and for some parliamentary purposes.

Not relevant really, just nerdiness. Sorry.

10/10

I love this type of pedantic pat carry on!! Pointing out that someone was right, but they got to the right answer in the wrong way...class. You just owned that gimp. K

I never realised this site was Irish.

Why are Irish people so sensitive about this stuff?

We get it, you have your own piece of land. We roughly know where abouts it is, now can we get on with the football?!

We were asked a football question and gave our answers! If your not interested then why are you posting in this thread?

Can't we all just stop pushing sterotypes and arguing in this thread, Why don't we all sit down, Stick some Dubliners on the stereo, Have a Guiness and read A good Roddy Doyle book whilst smoking our pipes.

I could fill the forum with shit I know nothing about, I just imagined it would be rather tedious for everyone else.

The topic has been done to death many times before. I suspect that PlanM, as much as he denies it was ever so slightly on another wum. PlanM has been around this place long enough to know

This thread has been seriously hijacked. Thought the initial question was an interesting one worthy of some debate.

Me too, and I've learnt a far amount about Irish football that I didn't know before

GB you're bang to rights for what Mockney is claiming I'm afraid, you leapt to conclusions and worse, you're still doing it. Why can't it just be that Plan M was asking a perfectly harmless question? Has he followed it up with a load of anti Irish abuse? No

Berbatov threads have been done to death too, does that mean we shouldn't do them anymore? It's still being ridiculously defensive for no reason whatsoever. It's actually getting in the way of folk learning a bit more about the Irish game

I also don't get Eyepoppers determination to close the thread, why not let it come to a close naturally just like the mass majority of other threads? When folk don't want to talk about a topic anymore they won't, if they're not doing anything untoward why curtail it?

look, the lad has a list of wums as long as my arm, all the way from the newbies up. He's been close to getting canned on several occasions. My gut reaction is that this started as a wum, descended into what it is and he tried to backtrack. I stand by my conclusion that this wasn't started for genuine reasons.

He was then given plenty of 'local' knowledge but Fred waded in with his size ten's and stirred it all up again

I can understand the need to keep wind-ups out of the football forum, maybe it would have been better moved to the general. But it was about football really I suppose. Difficult. You have to admit it was a bit funny, though.

No but there was still an accusatory tone, you yourself used the word guilty concering peoples reasons for supporting united, like ye were some doormen or the like. And has been said about the defensive stance there is memories of worse times and many loaded converstions on this topic.

 Bloody hell Moses, if you analyse my words that deeply you'll go insane! That's just my general language mate, don't fret about it

If I was determined to close it it would be closed, its not, you asked for it to be reopened and it was reopened.

The fact that the last 9 pages have basically just seen the same questions and same answered rolled out over and over again is why I think its probably a discussion that will go round and round in circles.

But hey, if you've points to make about the reaction to the OP (even thought people have tried to explain those reasons) carry on, I know you've a hard on for all things Blunderesque.

It needed to be said.... I'm sick of the sexual tension between you two.

(here's hoping this thread heads in a more interesting direction now!)

As its own topic, I disagree with thread locking. If there's help threads or similar which serve their purpose then that would be fine, but threads that concern a probable majority of this forum and which are bound to receive a wide range of opinions/stories shouldn't be locked for the sole fact that there may be many more others who haven't had the chance to express it yet. Whether the thread was started as a WUM or not does not really matter as long as the debate inside it is within logic and reason. There's many Irish lads here who have listed many reasons for the connection between them and United (modmins included) and there's no harm in others sharing their stories too. And even if few will stir things up a bit to rile the people concerned so what, how wound up can you really get by the fecking internet? Reds questioning other reds support isn't very cool in my book, but if someone wants to do it, for whatever reason, well let them. They'll soon be put in their place.

I know folk who are guilty of much of the stuff he's put forward in this thread...

Not fretting Brad, and no analysis needed in the context of people being defensive for no reason. Guilty of having non acceptable reasons for supporting a football club? I couldn't give a toss who is being sincere or on a WUM but if you are going to wonder about why people are defensive then maybe listen to their answers?

What are my chances of a league title if I become a life long Sligo Rovers fan next year?

Hi, ive allready bagged the title of 'Sligo Rovers Glory Hunter Fan' for myself. In fact that would make a good tagline!!

Where abouts in Sligo are you moses??

I've never been banned from the Caf, nor even temporarily banned! How the heck have I been close to "getting canned"?

I have done nothing wrong by posting this thread and always follow the forum rules.

Yeah, but you've managed to get on GBs bad side. Never a great idea!!:smirk:

I've realised that now! I wish I never started the bloody thread.

:nervous:

Cheers to the lads who have given their answers though, I understand things much more now, I especially enjoyed the PM I had from one of the newbies, very informative.

Can we all kiss and make up now?

If their answer is that they're going to intently focus on specific words to the extent they distort and take them out of all proportion?

Guilty as in someone put forward a theory, and I believed that theory was correct. Next time I make a comment I'll be sure to let you know next time so you can vet it for me

In fact why wait, in my next post I'd like to ask GB out on a date, how should I phrase it? I was going to go with 'Mr Blunder, would you do me the honour of escorting me on a date this evening?', but now I'm worried that by using the word 'honour', it might be misconstrued that I'm in fact accusing him of being a Nazi war criminal who likes marmite
