What the hell happened to him?

He was Chelsea's best player by a mile last season but I don't recall him playing a single minute this season?!

Was also linked to United for £60m just a few months ago too, so it's strange he's just fallen off the grid. Any ideas what's happened?

EDIT: for some reason it's only just occurred to me that he may be injured

He's not very good.

He hasn't played a lot recently due to a family member dying, I believe.

Was playing at the start of the season. He was given a fair bit of compassionate leave following him mum dying. He's bean 9n the bench a couple of times recently but was not in our squad at the weekend after the international break.

He is great for occasions like this but, he will be found lacking in matches where you are going against a side that is defending deep and you need a player to unlock the defense because he only brings long range shots and direct free kicks.

And great crossing. All of which are great tools to unlock a tight defence.

Any Chelsea fans want to shed some light on Willian? I saw a comment on the match thread last night that read ''Why do Chelsea fans not rate Willian? I always have''. I couldn't agree more. Any time I watch Willian he's brilliant and when he was linked with us I was more than happy for him to join. I think he'd improve us massively because of our lack of RW attack/service.

So, why don't you or Conte rate him?

Every time I've watched Willian I've enjoyed him. I find the negative comments on him baffling to be quite honest. He rarely loses the ball, even in tight spaces. He can run in central midfield or on the wing with the ball and take players out the game. He can cross, shoot from distance; he's dynamic, pacy and generally has good decision-making. It is true that his form does dip, however, how much of that is down to the ever-changing managerial situation and subsequent tactical deviations?

Even in those games you thought he was good if you go to Chelsea forums they will say he was poor there...if you read their criticism in general is unfair or simple made up. When everybody is poor they always will pick Willian to hate. Was the same thing with Matic.

In the case of Willian i suspect they just have a unconsciouss very high standard for a winger because of Hazard. But there is no other Hazard out there they can sign.

Could have had a hat trick last night; hit the post twice. Was a constant threat for Chelsea, much better than Hazard, and I think Hazard actually had a good game.

He's been a top player ever since arriving to the Premier League. Performs much better when given the freedom to play along the whole front line. He's excellent at exploiting the space in the hole with his explosive pace. Superb shot on his as well.

Willian is a strange one. He was clearly a wonderfully talented and creative player at Shakhtar, but since he joined Chelsea it always seemed like he was constrained by playing alongside other very creative players especially Hazard. He's capable of some amazing things, but his final product was very poor for the first few years. The disaster of the 15/16 season was actually a breakthrough time for Willian. When hardly anyone else on the team seemed to give a feck, he fought harder than anyone, and suddenly seemed to discover a talent for scoring wonder goal free kicks. I'll always adore him for what he did that year.

Unfortunately in Oct 16 his mother died, and it seems to have had a really deep and lasting impression on him. He's a considerably less happy person on the pitch than he used to be, although its hard to tell whether it negatively affected his play or whether the other creatives coming back into form just pushed him back into his box a bit. Either way he seemed to have dropped off again, with occasional wonderful performances but a lot of average games. The last two games however he's been absolutely outstanding, and I hope Conte has the sense to give him the position for as long as it continues.

One final point, there's been lots of people over the years who have described him as a 'workhorse'. This is complete and utter bullshit of the highest order, Willian is an exquisitely talented attacking midfielder, but who has real problems with consistency.

He deserved that goal last night, unlucky not to score a hatrick of screamers. Great player. Would love to have him at Pool.

Same with me. I’ve always enjoyed watching him play and have wished he came to us for years now.

His goal was brilliant, feckin awesome.

Maybe he will fancy his chance of playing for Jose again, if Chelsea will sell.

Plus, he plays on the right and this is something we are missing at the moment.

I know some Brazilian NT fans don’t rate him because of his end product and there is view that he isn’t a creative player but more so a workhorse. I could see Chelsea fans having that same view.

I can't understand those who question this guy's quality.

Top player. Intelligent, skilful, creative, consistent and has proven to be a match-winner on occasion. He makes things happen, whilst being a very hardworking player. He's terrific.

Yeah he's class and I've thought so for a long time.

Although I think we all saw how you keep him quiet last night. Hoof a clearance off his face from 3 feet away and he disappears! He was untouchable before that happened and anonymous afterwards!

Agreed. United fans would love him. He would be a cult figure here.

Like others here, I only ever see him playing well. Conversely I don't think I've seen Pedro have a good game for Chelsea (with one obvious exception).

Does Willian start for Brazil?

He used to but Coutinho got his spot. He's like a 12th player though and if Coutinho continues to dip in form it won't surprise me if he starts. I prefer him anyways.

Yeah would make more sense to have Willian on the right with Neymar on the left. Who starts centrally, Firmino?

Take out intelligent and creative, and you'd be spot on. It's not that he isnt capable of doing great things and he has a hell of a lot in his locker but he doesn't have that vision and creativity of top quality attackers. Hazard and Pedro have generally been the preferred combination because they have those next level qualities.

He has spells where he is superb and other spells where he isn't, I don't think any Chelsea fan has nailed it yet that is how it is.

It will be interesting if he plays against you which player turns up.

His decision making has held him back from being a really great player, apart from that he has pretty much everything.

I must be very biased when it comes to this guy because I can't see a lot of the shortcoming others see. He's probably my favourite player since Lampard left, so I'm probably blinded by love.

Also when people say Pedro is preferred because he helps in defending, I see it the other way round - Willian tracks back more than Pedro. Playing for us under two defensive managers somewhat stifled his creativity. I'm convinced he'd flourish creatively if he played more freely.

From my experiences a lot of the fans I've heard criticise Willian (or even want him "gone") are the type who want to buy the flavour of the month every half-season. Football fans have become spoilt lately and have a lot of misplaced expectations, especially at top clubs.

I'm a big Willian fan and also don't understand when people say he can't do this or that, but maybe I can't see that because I've not seen all of his matches. I've wanted him to come to Barcelona for the last 2 seasons, and I'm glad he's getting plaudits now, despite it being because he tore Barca a new bum bum.

He's a brilliant player in transition.
Seems to get from his own box to opponents in no time.
Brilliant ball carrier.

I've always been a fan of his, would be amazing on our RW. Had some tough spells here and there at Chelsea but he should start every game for them, he's a bigger asset for them than Pedro.

Comes up with big moments more than Eden overrated Hazard.
That's laughable

Willian is a very inconsistent player despite being 29, there's a reason why you don't hear his name for months before he produces something incredible. Also, his passing is very hit and miss as Chelsea fans would tell you.

Hazard is on another stratosphere to Willian, I was relieved when Conte hooked him at 1-1.

Pedro is more of a liability than an asset to anyone.

Regardless of opinions about his qualities, always said, huge respect for his attitude and play during period where JM was on brink of a sack.
