I quite like it. Forgetting about all club football for a month to watch the purely pride driven World Cup, not players throwing tantrums and wanting to leave, not players half assing and so on. Transfer season is only interesting because theres no football on. Once the season starts, it's mostly forgotten and the real stuff begins.

Anyway we do need to have a busy month once the world cup is done. A lot of signings to complete before the season starts if we want to have any hope of improvement.

I don't believe that's the right approach - to place so much emphasis on new signings - when teams can improve in other ways ... through further and/or better coaching, for example, and/or through bringing younger players into the first team squad and /or through switching around roles in an existing team and/or through continuity, and so on.

It's not all about transfers and shiny new players. And it's not a race to see which club can sign the most new players or the most expensive new players.

Oh I agree but I'm pretty much of the opinion that what we've seen with Mourinho is pretty much what we'll get, and his improvement lie purely with just having better players. Of course other managers can get more of an improvement in playing style through coaching, developing players both young and the ones already playing... Don't think Mourinho is quite the type for that though. Anyway, trying to avoid all that for the month :p

Considering the World Cup players will be going on holiday for a few weeks after the World Cup ends - and the English transfer window shuts on August 9th - I'm finding it difficult to see when the PL teams will do their business.

I think the final week (6th-9th August) will be like a 4 day deadline day. PL clubs rushing to get last minute deals done.

Till the world cup is over and endless transfer speculation takes over. Thankfully, our tour starts just a few days later, so we'll still have football to watch.
So when are we going to do transfers then?

I would expect that Woody is working on things behind the scenes and, come 16 July, he will reveal 4 new signings who will hot foot it straight off to the preseason tour.

Well he's missed that deadline by 5 days already!

I imagine Woody will be all over it, he's the biggest Muppet of them all.

Boring isn't it?

I know the World Cup's on but hardly any transfer activity is, apparently, going on.

I guess the bullshitters in the press can get their clicks from actual stories about football for a change, instead of having to make stuff up all the time.

This is going to be a frantic transfer window between 16 July and 9 August, I can't wait :boring:
Jesus wept. This is a football forum and you're giving out and saying it is boring because there is a lack of transfer gossip when the World Cup is going on. Why not actually watch some football rather than talking about bullshit transfer gossip?

I agree what you said about coaching etc , I think that's what Man City did last summer, but that's going to be difficult in a World Cup summer, to have an effective and extended pre season. Well actually, it's just not going to happen. Sometimes it's not all about signings, for example Man City probably only need to sign a couple of squad players this summer, however our squad needs a lot of investment in several positions. No amount of coaching is going to put legs back in Valencia or turn young left footed etc

United could be a decent player this year, when you consider that City won't do too much given their pep build is close to finished and PSG aren't in the market.

I would have thought Real would make some inroads this summer into building for the future. Barce seem to have doine the bulk of the heavy lifting there already.

Juve seem to have an appetite for squad change. I guess Chelsea could end up being a cog once the manager situation works itself out.

but hopefully if there is a serious player moving, it is to us.

There are some on here who actually do believe that under Pep, our players who suddenly perform better.
I don't believe that to be the case. Pep requires a very specific type of player and if an existing player does not fit that profile, he gets sold and in comes a player with that profile.

I would like to know the idiot who proposed closing the transfer window early during the world cup year #muppet
It's not necessarily a bad thing. England is where all the money is. Continental teams will be keen to sell to the Premier League early, rather than being left with only Spanish/Italian/German bids later in the window. It could mean a few decent bargains now that there two transfer deadlines: a big money deadline and a later smaller money deadline. Everyone will be keen to sell before the first.

Yes, but when preparing a bid takes 4-6 weeks, there isn't much time left.

You’d like to think there’s at least 1 or 2 just waiting in the pipeline ready to announced or have a definitive fee agreed between Utd and whomever we’re buying from, but the World Cup is in the way.

I think I read the other day Jose was leaving his RT punditry post to carry out some Utd work in the coming week or so?

So not far off completing Grant, a decent and logical signing.

I am however worried that we aren’t getting solid links to any real first teamers that will improve our squad. We still need a RB or LB, CM, RW and back up to Rom. I get it’s the WC but I really hope we’ve tied some signings up ready and waiting.

I don't think we can buy until we sell. Squad is already bloated.
Early to give a definitive opinion but it's troubling how poor we are at moving players on.

We won't be buying another RB, given that Valencia (club captain), is 1st choice and Dalot/Darmian and 2nd/3rd.
Back up to Lukaku - we already have Rashford and if necessary, Martial can step in.
CM - we bought Fred, to replace Carrick and Fellaini re-signed.

That leaves RW and LB - these are 2 players I so expect to see purchased in the next few weeks.
If we start the season without the above 2 players, we won't be fighting for the league title.

Have this feeling we will sign one more and it be a back up striker to Lukaku. There will be a meltdown on the Caf and come December if were no way near top 2 and not in good form, mourinho will be gone. Hope I'm wrong tho.

It's worrying on the transfer front at the minute. I'm sure we are working on things and at least sounding out players at this point but we have a hell of a lot of business to do before we can consider ourselves challengers next season.

As mentioned LB and RW are a must. I personally would like another CM and a CB but I think the resigning of Fellaini makes the former unlikely. To me, everything points to a limited budget. The fact we have reportedly been haggling over the Darmian fee is an indicator of this. We also elected to give a new contract to fellaini rather than invest in another £40m+ CM, something City would not hesitate about doing.

Im interested to see what business we do but have no faith that we will address all of the problem areas in the squad this window. The fact we aren't going for a new LB is extremely worrying to say the least.

Doesn't look like we're in for a LB and not being linked with RW either (aside from Bale). Mourinho bemoaned our lack of "presence" up front with Lukaku out last season, so a tall, strong backup striker with decent aerial ability seems a possibility, plus an experienced CB.
