WSL chat - but mostly United miscellaneous

Ooh, city draw with Everton, meaning we have a 7 point lead over them with 3 games to go. Just need a draw or better in the derby to secure CL next season. Squeaky!
Be excellent to beat them and take that CL spot while also finishing any chance for them.

100%, and after the FA cup game, and their draw today I am kind of confident we can do it. Which either shows how far we have come since last season, how bad their injury crisis and manager issues have dragged them down, or somewhere in between!

We'll beat Chelsea on 30th April. It won't come down to the City game. There - I said it.

Like West Ham, Everton have been difficult to beat recently. Great result for us today.

I posted my response on the podcast thread rather than here. A decent listen. Thanks.

Palace relegated, although the clubs will vote on that at the end of the season, I believe.

Chelsea thoroughly humbled 4-1 both home and away by Barcelona.... It's been a while since I've been able to trot this joke out, but I'd 8 2 be a Chelsea fan right now!!

All seriousness though, they'll be hurting and hungry on Wednesday

August 2011? United 8 - 2 Arsenal?

I'm not sure about your second.point. I think they might be dejected and demoralised. I genuinely think we can Barca them.

Edit: The Arsenal score so far is quite unbelievable.

Yeah, Arsenal have had quite the steady turnaround since sacking Jonas. Really impressive victory, but Barca look something else to any other team on the planet - I imagine mixed feelings for Arsenal fans right now.

Hi Rood, finally gave this a listen on the way up to Leigh this afternoon. Cracking listen as always - my only feedback is more please!
Thanks mate - this one was overdue, will try not to leave it so long for the next Women's focus

Aside from the hilariously contradictory "Common Sense With Joey Barton" bit.... This isn't the first time I have seen a Mead to United rumour. I believe her and Miedema are still going strong so them potentially living in the same city is not as far fetched as some might think...

I think this is a parody account. Lianne has already come out and said this is a lie.
Oh. Well, that's a shame! Still, it's a nice idea.... That's the next stage for us I think - finally have a summer of keeping the group together and add a couple of sprinkles of stardust.

For sure. A player like Mead would be the perfect addition to our squad. And I’m hopeful we won’t see any of our major players leave this summer for once. I don’t know the contract situation with all our players, but the only one I know is out of contract in the summer is Williams.

There aren’t any obvious weaknesses in our starting XI, but if we do qualify for Champions League, then we’ll need a bigger squad for sure, and maybe some extra quality in our front three.

In other news... London City Lionesses confirmed their promotion to the WSL today. I have a few issues with this team and their owner (promotion through outspending, co-opting the Lionesses name, multi-club ownership amongst other things) but it can't be denied that it will really cool to have a non-mens affiliated club in the top league.

Oddly enough, the best recent comparison to LCL is ourselves... Parachute in to the Championship, spend a bunch of cash putting together a WSL competitive team then get promoted. It will be very interesting to see how much they spend this summer and where in the table they wind up competing.

Brighton v Arsenal - Slegers has picked a very strong team. She wants to finish second. A win for them would make our game against them next week pretty redundant, but both us and Arsenal could field reserve sides with two big cup games approaching.

On the other hand... Brighton currently 1-0 up through Fran Kirby!

4-2. Well, I don’t think anyone saw that coming. Well done to Sophie Baggaley for her POTM, even though she didn't get any minutes with us.

So, do we want to really push for 2nd next week, or rest players for the final?

Push for second

I watched the match and was utterly shocked. I completely understand why Arsenal suffered a big letdown three days after that amazing win at Lyon, but felt sure they'd have their house back in order today. I guess some hangovers last longer than others.

Anyway, it seems to me that Arsenal face the same question as we do regarding next week. Unlike us they have two weeks off to prepare for their next big match, but also unlike us they are coming off 3 matches in 12 days and probably need the rest.

LCL came into existence after their split from Millwall in 2019, the original Lionesses under the Millwall name were actually founding members of the of WSL 2 (now Championship) and without the split might have ceased to exist in any form. The Lionesses name is obviously a nod to Millwall and the Millwall Lionesses was a thing for decades before the England Women's team even used it.

Ah, fair enough, I withdraw that criticism! Was unaware of Millwall (though I knew Millwall are the Lions so Lionesses makes sense for them).

Learn something new every day, I am glad to be corrected.

I guess this is as good a place to post it as anywhere ... Everton are not going to bulldoze Goodison Park but it is going to continue as home for the women's team. I think that's great news for the game.

It's incredible news... And on a personal note, an historic English ground I hadn't got to yet... Getting on next season's away trip to Everton for certain!
