Almost cemented his status as the worst signing in PL history now.
This got me thinking, firstly on whether it's true, but also on who his competition is over the span of the entirety of the PL since its inception.

Of course, 'pound for pound' or 'bang for buck' are extremely important factors: Sanchez flopping on a free is nothing like as bad as Antony, Pepe, Lukaku etc. flopping off the back of big money signings.

Who makes your top 5? Or even your Mount Rushmore of Shite?

Pepe to Arsenal, Lukaku from Inter to Chelsea, Antony to United, Ndombele to Spurs, Tonali to Newcastle (on hold though).

Expectation on the latter two would be that they would really be propelling both clubs on yet it's been anything but. Especially Ndombele, he was truly awful.

I wouldn’t say Lukaku deserves to be in the running, at least at United.
He maybe didn’t live up to expectations but he was basically a 1 in 2 striker for us and was pretty decent in his first season.

Also while he was a flat track bully he did have the odd big performance such as against PSG, it was more his temperament and lack of professionalism which pissed me off.

Antony and Sanchez to United have got to be up there. Antony is going to be the biggest big money flop in PL history so far, and it’s not even close. At least with Pepe, who is a close second for me, showed signs of talent.

Antony, Pépé, Kepa, Alexis Sanchez and Naby Keita.

Honorable mention to Lukaku, Benteke, Carroll, Phillips, B. Mendy and Ndombélé.

Ali Dia
Pepe
Drinkwater
Lukaku (back to Chelsea)
Antony

Honorable mentions:

Kepa, Fofana, Rodwell, Sancho, DVB, Shevchenko, Ibe, Brewster, Carroll

There’s probably loads more obvious ones in forgetting.

Lukaku has to be in. I'm 90% sure he's a money laundering project.

Drinkwater in for a shout as well. £35m and he must've played under 30 games and been 4/10 in half of them.

Is Drinkwater any worse of a signing than Donny Van De Beek?

Lukaku to Chelsea
Antony to united
Fofana to Chelsea
Carroll to Liverpool
Pepe to arsenal

For anyone doubting Carroll to Liverpool they paid over ten million more for him than Suarez in the same window, he scored six premier league goals for them.

Antony
Van de Meek
Sancho
Sanchez (He wasn't free, we bartered him for Mkhitaryan, who was worth at least 25m-30m)
Wesley Fofana
Nicolas Pepe

Antony is the worst. The rest can be in any order.

Sanchez
Lukaku to Chelsea
Antony
Pepe
Mangala

Honourable mentions

Kepa maybe should be in the main list
Sancho colossal waste of money
Mendy for obvious reasons
Phillips what a waste of time
Robinho I mean did he even know who City were
Di Maria didn't want to be here, on the field was ok
Casemiro one decent season by the look of it
Carroll I mean wtf

They managed to sell him for 15m though and 2m ish on loan fees so got about half back which isn't too bad.

Cannot believe no one has mentioned Kepa yet. £72m and £190k a week for a fun sized GK with T-rex arms has to surely be up there.

Mount is the worst financially. We paid £55m for a player who would have been free next month and started about 5 games all season.

In terms of £ per minute played there can't be any footballer in history who's worse value than that.

Tbh we could scoop all 5:
Sanchez
Sancho
Mount
Antony
DVB.

Probably 300 million there in transfer fees and wages, and we laugh at Chelsea

I'm seeing some rose tinted glasses in here. You could look at our history over the last 10 or so years and pull the failed signings from there.

He’s really not he’s had only one season , next season can’t be any worse injury wise . Compared to Antony who’s been fit all season and has been a turd

Rodwell
Bellion
Sanchez to United
Mangala (what a hype job)
Carroll to Liverpool
Schneiderlin

there’s a couple of stinkers signed by houllier when he was at Liverpool too

There's a difference between signing Sancho, one of the best young wingers with massive potential who just turned out to flop in England, and Antony who wasn't really that highly rated when we signed him. The first one is on Sancho himself, the second on the club.

Too much Recency bias in this thread already. Antony has been disappointing but he isn’t anywhere near the 5 worst since 1992. He’s not even in the worst 5 United signing.
  • Berahino to Stoke - never scored for them
  • Bebe - you know the rest
  • Mutu to Chelsea - they sued him after sacking him
  • Drinkwater to Chelsea
  • Ali Dia - the legend himself

Ndombele could've been one of the greats of this generation, insanely gifted footballer but little desire to do much with it. Can see him retiring once his Spurs deal runs out.

Pound for pound, Antony, Sancho, Pogba and Casemiro have to be up there.

(Casemiro purely due to his salary and length of contract, he's our Winston Bogarde but Winston was reportedly only on £40k/week)

As one of the 5 worst signings in prem history? Give over!
Yeah, probably not. It’s just that I remember in his first season he registered zero goals or assists. Definitely not the worst, even for Liverpool.

The worst would include Antony to us, Sánchez to us, and Pepe to Arsenal, all of whom have been already mentioned. Our transfer business has been so bad this past decade.
