I just saw this tweet, the end of a generation is the ideal time to discuss this topic and the question is harder to answer that I expected. I would welcome your opinions. This was clearly PlayStation inspired and as someone who grew up playing on PlayStation and PC, I see gaming in terms of PlayStation eras, but Xbox and Nintendo responses are welcome.... can those who enjoy console wars sniping bore off somewhere else?
PS1 for me is very clearly Spyro, if I had to choose one I would say Gateway to Glimmer. But I adore the entire series.
PS2 this generation was all about GTA for me, I played those games non-stop. I was about 11 when GTA 3 released, but thankfully I was allowed to play it. San Andreas was awesome, but Vice City has a special place in my heart.
PS3 is tough. The first thing that comes to my mind is GTA V (I refuse to acknowledge that their was a game between San Andreas and GTA5) Trevor is one of my all time favourite characters. It would be easy to say GTA and move on, but then I think of Oblivion and Skyrim - Oblivion on PS3 was my introduction to Elder Scrolls (which is where @Tiber comes from) and it is a series very near to my heart. Whilst I first played it on PS3, I quickly moved to PC and had a better time with both games there, so in my mind they are PC games - its my rules! Then there is Uncharted 1-3 and Last of Us - all of which I love. But for me, one series tops all of these (narrowly in the case of GTA) Mass Effect 2 and 3. I played Mass Effect 1 on PC, but switched to PS3 for 2 and 3. Mass Effect 2 is obviously fantastic, but personally I loved everything about Mass Effect 3 (aside from the last five mins), I played the entire game in two sittings and it was the best gaming experience of my life. I even loved the DLC, especially the Citical DLC which was just an awesome house party! Mass Effect 3 takes the crown.
PS4 - what I often call the console of dreams. I have spent more time gaming on PS4 than any other system. The first thing that comes to mind is Destiny 2, I have had a Destiny addiction since the day that I bought my PS4. Destiny 1 was good, but for all its flaws I have had so much fun in Destiny 2, last time I checked www.wastedondestiny.com I had over 1000 hours on PS4 plus more on PC. Moving beyond my personal obsession with Destiny, the PS4 first party content was absurdly good, Uncharted 4, Last of Us 2, Horizon, Spider-man, Ratchet and Clank - every one of them is a classic in my opinion... I somehow missed God Of War but will play it on PS5. And we got a Remaster of Crash and Spyro - both of which I loved! And many people discovered GTA V on PS4, its among the top selling games on both PS3 and PS4. But none of these games are going to take my PS4 vote - my top two are Red Dead Redemption 2 and Witcher 3. I am obviously a huge fan of Rockstar, but I had never previously played a Red Dead game and whilst I have never interested in the Western genre, the story of this game gripped me in a way that very games ever have, I deeply care about Arthur Morgan. Witcher 3 is a game that I very recently discovered, I tried to play Witcher 1 a while ago, but it has aged brutally and I gave up. I started playing Witcher 3 just over a month ago and I only finished it last night. What a game! Much like Red Dead, I care about Geralt and Ciri, those characters feel alive to me. Even the DLC is outstanding, Heart of Stone might be the best DLC that I have ever played. These two games are neck and neck in my opinion, but as I have just completed Witcher 3 I have a lot of emotions tied to that game and I think that is unfair on Read Dead. My PS4 vote goes to Red Dead Redemption 2 - by a tiny margin.
Couple of random notes. I love Fallout, New Vegas is my favourite game in the series and I actually prefer Fallout 4 to Fallout 3. Just like Oblivion and Skyrim, I think of these as PC games, but I don't think either would finish as my top of any generation even if I counted them as console games. I am not a huge Nintendo guy, but I do have a Switch; I might be the only person in the world who didn't love Breath of the Wild, but Mario Odyssey was amazing and deserves a mention as one of the best games of the 'PS4' generation. I played it on PC many years after it released, so I have no clue what generation it belongs to; but KOTOR is one of my all time favourite games.
If you cant be arsed reading the shit I wrote above (can't blame you):
PS1: Spyro
PS2: Vice City
PS3: Mass Effect 3
PS4: Red Dead Redemption 2...just
I have probably overlooked a load of games that I love, I will be interested to see your lists.
