Quality XI and agree with most that baresi has to be included for it to be truely great side, and to the poster who said this team would struggle against current barca side ---- I can only imagine you never watched these players in their pomp, so your forgiven.

Maldini is my favourite player of all time. He looked good, played good and was VERY good.

The rest of that side is very good.

Van Basten was before my time, but was he really better than the likes of fat Ronaldo or Thierry Henry? Henry in his prime was one of the best players I've ever seen, he had the lot.

Marco van basten and maradona upfront. Wow! cant help but notice baresi left out gullit. Great player, but marco and frank were arguably more crucial to that great Milan side.
Yeah, but I think it's as Fortitude says - it's a functional team and a midfield of Zidane and Gullit in the centre would be indulgence.

I'm guessing its from retired players only therefore no Messi? Have to say a midfield of Rijkaard, Zidane, Figo and Giggs would get raped in midfield by the current Barcelona side alone.

Wow you at the wind up here Dumbstar?

I'm sure it helps that Baresi played along with Van Basten, whereas he didn't even play against Ronaldo or Henry. Always makes that bit more of an impact seeing them in person. I don't think it's seen as that controversial opinion to have him over Ronaldo, they're both talked about as the best strikers to play the game....Henry just doesn't come into it at all.

I wouldn't want to play Zidane in a midfield two against barca.

I think I would swap Giggs for Matthaus, and go 4-2-3-1. Especially since Diego admitted that Matthaus was the only player he just couldn't wriggle away from.

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
It really isn't the best team possible, just his personal favourites.
Yeah, just interested to hear how good he actually was in comparison. One of the older heads should have some insight.

True, Henry never does get a mention in these. It's just hit ms how underrated he actually is. I remember being desperate as a kid to say Ruud was better than him but deep down I knew this was shite. There haven't been many players that I've feared us playing over the years that actually came up with the goods on the day.

If he'd have played elsewhere in his prime then I think he'd be recognised as one of the best. It didn't help that he went to Barca too late. He'd be awesome in his prime for this current Barca.

I think for Baresi, league and club performance comes first, and as such, given Serie A of his time is possibly the strongest league there has ever been, he's going to pluck players from there first and foremost. Not only that, he trained with and witnessed all of Van Basten's feats first hand when he was the de facto best striker in the best league. It's a no-brainer for him to pick him.

Van Basten's World Cup tends to go against him and, for people who take all-time status extremely seriously, counts against him more than Ronaldo's lack of a CL medal. Choking at World Cups has always been considered the worst thing a potential uber great can do, and probably always will be.

Yeah, but I think it's as Fortitude says - it's a functional team and a midfield of Zidane and Gullit in the centre would be indulgence.
Hadn't thought of that. Gullit not being put at least on the right is a surprise.

I think Seedorf has surpassed Rijkaard and I'd definitely have him or Matthaus in there instead of the spitter. Van Basten is there, as has been said, coz he was Baresi's mate, but also coz he did it at the highest level (Euros) and in the best league at the time.

:handshake:

That's exactly the two players I was thinking about instead of Rijkaard. You need a proper water carrier (or water carrier ***) in there. Maybe even Makelele.

And on the left if you're going to have Giggs, nothing wrong with that, then Maldini has to be behind him. Carlos and Giggs will just get in each other's way with neither covering each other in defence well enough.

Seedorf, the endlessly inventive but ultimately aimless attacking midfielder is a better fit than Rijkaard, the holding midfielder/converted centre back with tremendous discipline? What's your logic there?

Seedorf was only an idea, but Matthaus still stands. He was the like the uninjured version of Bryan Robson (yes I did see them both play in the 80s).

Franklin Rijkaard is arguably the best that position has. Ever. To suggest someone over him, rather than to play alongside him takes some doing.

Arguing for Mattheus in the side is all well and good, but he would be taking Zidane's spot, not Rijkaard's.

And Makelele is half the player that Rijkaard was, and that's only in terms of being a defensive midfielder. When you add on Rijkaard's offensive nous and passing, there's a considerable gap between them as footballers. Rather than that being a slight on Makelele, it's a nod to how good Rijkaard was.

Let's get something straight: Seedorf was an excellent player good enough to play for most teams who aged very well, but he was also a very lucky boy who just happened to wander from CL winning team to CL winning team. He was never close to being the best midfielder in the world, was never even the best Dutch midfielder of his own generation.

Rijkaard shits on him from a great height.

I don't think you can really judge defensive midfielders from youtube to be fair.

Or Wikipedia Smithers. I'm guessing since you're probably now 18 you're going to go into overdrive with brownosing for 2012?

Try and feel the touch of a woman, it might change the way you view the world and you're strange goals on an Internet forum.

He wasn't. He was better than he gets credit for as he generally got the job done defensively, which was admirable considering his forays but 'a beast of a defender' he certainly wasn't. There were many around far more solid. Cafu is more noteworthy in this regard.

Carlos in his prime was still stupid enough to attempt this in a world cup quarter final:

And there were dribblers who simply had his number and raped him at will. A young Messi being the most memorable, but he wasn't the only one. He plain didn't like wingers who turned in-field on his right foot.
I remember those rumours that when Messi put Carlos on the ground at the Bernabeu he broke his finger:lol:

Messi would do that to anyone though, he made Cannavaro even more stupid looking and skipped past Nesta for fun a few weeks ago.

It's not a slight on king Carlos.

Thing is, I was making a serious point and you're just making another cheap, pointless jibe...and yet it's me who needs to change. Right. Thing is I've not actually commented on how good Rijkaard was here, nor any players...if I did I'd have more basis for an opinion than you did, though, because I've actually seen games of them.

Of course you haven't commented as you'll rather make your lil sly digs than formulate your own opinions. A serious point? Don't think everyone is as stupid as you, you're not sly.

Also keep acting like you've known what I've seen compared to your compulsive lying self. I know I've seen a lot more footy than your 18 year old self. Posting what you've read on wiki would never change the fact that you can't feck with my knowledge of the game. It might fool a lot of these malleable lads but you're inaccuracies leave you exposed constantly. You're a fraud, deal with it.

Typical brownosing mentality Smithers. Keep your snivelling bum crack licking self away from me and we'll be fine. I'm not Mr Burns so there's no need to be on my dick but then again you love my style.

Couldn't care less what you think Wayne, I don't go around fire expecting not to sweat so Smithers over there should refrain from trying his lil digs (how many times is the teen gimp going to use the youtube line against me, come up with a new barb) in every thread and playing victim when he gets burned.

Somebody should sit that boy Waylon down and speak to him as a friend. I don't like wasting energy on his pathetic barbs and would much prefer to discuss footy in peace. But he'll be back, he never learns. He's like a lil monkey in a psychology study who keeps touching the wire despite being electrocuted every time.

I genuinely thought you only watched older players from youtube clips. I thought you said it about Maradona. Apologies if I'm wrong and you've actually seen a decent amount of their games.

I genuinely think your a snivelling habitual brown noser Smithers. Your lil digs are lame as feck. What your gay barbs have to do with the football or any discussion you post them in is beyond me but im ready for you Waylon. I still remember your lil pms back in the day begging me for tube clips. I get my info from all sources except the lil wiki sprees you go on. You probably could have a degree in faking knowledge based on Wikipedia links for the primary purpose of sucking farts out of older poster's butts.

Go back to residing in crack, staying celibate and posting links for matches you don't watch.

Or do what normal 18 year olds do and try get some pussy before heading off to uni, weirdo.

You really think so? He's a slimy brownoser of the highest order who should get it in his head by now to not even post to me.

He starts it I'll finish it every time untill he learns. He should stay away from me, that's all but he always comes back for more.
