75% or so from 12 yards is anything but pretty good...Every player will miss penalties. Generally i'd say he's an excellent penalty taker, he hasn't exactly missed the highest profile penalties going. If he misses one in a CL Semi/CL Final or World Cup it'd be a different story but his overall record is probably pretty good.
Maradona himself missed his fair share.
Just 1? Was that Betis away in the copa del rey after being 5-0 up from the first leg?Did a quick search, he has scored 16 out of 22 penalties (missing 6), which is a conversion rate of 73%. That needs drastic improvement, as Cal? said - but on the flip side, Barca has only not gone on to win in 1 of those matches.
CR7 though has taken 38 in his career, scoring 34, missing 4. With a conversion rate of around 90%. (at Madrid he's scored 23 out of 24).

Very arrogant view specially when keepers (sometimes) pull off amazing saves.Truth is missing a penalty is just shameful, period. Because there is rarely a good excuse for it. That is why it is always big news when it happens.
At an amateur level, yes. When the keepers arent as good you really shouldnt be missing. The keepers have no knowledge of where you are going to go etc. Much harder for a keeper. I play at a decent level and didnt miss my first pen til last season, was gutted.Truth is missing a penalty is just shameful, period. Because there is rarely a good excuse for it. indeed, the other day Mata from chelsea missed a penalty because birmingham keeper did a great jobVery arrogant view specially when keepers (sometimes) pull off amazing saves.
I already knew about his shoddy penalty record, never mind what others do, missing 1/4 of all penalties is simply not good enough...Did a quick search, he has scored 16 out of 22 penalties (missing 6), which is a conversion rate of 73%. The counter argument to that is professional players can practice their penalties all day and therefore shouldn't be operating with much of a margin for error. At a professional level with all the dvds, videos and the quality of keepers, its certainly more acceptable to miss a penalty. Certainly isnt shameful.
fecks sake why did I click on this thread. Goodbye.I already knew about his shoddy penalty record, never mind what others do, missing 1/4 of all penalties is simply not good enough...
Top post. He's clearly the best player in the world by a long chalk at the moment. I also like the fact that he doesn't appear to need to cheat all the time, which makes him a far superior footballer to one of the past who did it all the time.I don't quite understand how someone can be anti-Messi, tbh. He's nowhere near infallible, but on TOP of his remarkable football ability, he seems a very honest, down to earth professional.
He's not really renowned for diving (I'm not saying he has never dived but you get the drift), he doesn't cheat, he doesn't feign injury, he's probably the most fouled or kicked footballer - but he just seems to get up and get on with it, he scores and sets up goals (though he is a bit more selfish these days, then say, 2 years ago) and generally, he mesmerizes and produces entertainment of the highest order.
Basically, he's the best footballer on the planet, bar none. I don't think someone could have picked a worse player to dislike, frankly.
There's a point in liking "he who must not be named in this thread" and appreciating what he did for our club but to take it to the insanely obssessed levels where it kinds of impacts your joy at watching Messi is frankly, ridiculous and a bit childish.
I enjoy watching them both, though I hate the fact that both of their clubs are currently stronger than ours. But to be blunt, Messi is undisputedly TBPITW.
Think he has 2 foul throw ins this season.I already knew about his shoddy penalty record, never mind what others do, missing 1/4 of all penalties is simply not good enough...

Okay, good enough for what though? What possible difference does it make to him as a player overall? Wayne is fairly inconsistent at penalties, all that means is that he shouldn't take pens if there is someone better available. You look like your trying to use his penalty record as a stick to beat him with as a player, which makes zero sense in the wider context of his achievements as seen each season.I already knew about his shoddy penalty record, never mind what others do, missing 1/4 of all penalties is simply not good enough...
So we are not allowed to point out his weakness in the 'Messi' thread? How about renaming it 'Messi-praise only'.fecks sake why did I click on this thread. Goodbye.
brilliant idea! i vote "yes"!So we are not allowed to point out his weakness in the 'Messi' thread? How about renaming it 'Messi-praise only'.
That's what I was getting at, it looks like Guardiola is indulging Messi's desire to score more goal even though he isn't very good at penalties.Okay, good enough for what though? If Messi wasn't banging in the same amount goals per games, and achieving half that figure in assists each season, perhaps his penalty record might mean something.
Go start one. I promise not to criticise him in that thread.brilliant idea! i vote "yes"!
I agree. A good penalty is unstoppable, even if the keeper knows where it is going he can't do anything about it. It's a skill that can be worked on too.Truth is missing a penalty is just shameful, period. Because there is rarely a good excuse for it. That is why it is always big news when it happens.
He could be, but then we don't really know the quality of other penalty takers on the team. Like for United, a lot of us question Rooney as a penalty taker, but I have faith that we wouldn't let him take them if there was someone clearly and consistently better. Nani, Hernandez and Berbatov all look like better takers in my eyes, but they haven't had the run in that Wayne has and aren't picked on the day, so perhaps it's not the gamble it looks like. I guess it's probably the same with Barcelona. That's what I was getting at, it looks like Guardiola is indulging Messi's desire to score more goal even though he isn't very good at penalties.
Now because he's been taking most Barcas penalties, there isn't much stats available for Xavi & co, but I find it hard to believe none of them is a better Pk taker.
That's all very well, but Villa takes penalties for Spain and has a better record for Valencia & Spain than Messi does.He could be, but then we don't really know the quality of other penalty takers on the team. really? because of the 27 goals he scored in la liga this season, only two were from penaltysThat's what I was getting at, it looks like Guardiola is indulging Messi's desire to score more goal even though he isn't very good at penalties.

a good shot is unstoppable, that doesn't mean that every shot should be at goal and if it doesnt the shooter is shitI agree. A good penalty is unstoppable, even if the keeper knows where it is going he can't do anything about it. It's a skill that can be worked on too.
Okay, so let's just say Villa should take the penalties. Who cares? Why does this even matter? That's all very well, but Villa takes penalties for Spain and has a better record for Valencia & Spain than Messi does.
Now I'm aware that Villa has been injured, dropped this season, but how about last season?
Because he needs to prove that Ronaldo is a better player than Messi.Okay, so let's just say Villa should take the penalties. Who cares? Why does this even matter?
That can't be real? 10 penalties?? SO take away penalties and Ronaldo has 18 goals to Messis 25? So Messi missed one in the league so that means Barca have had 3 penalties whilst madrid have had 10? that's some stat.really? because of the 27 goals he scored in la liga this season, only two were from penaltys
here:
Nombre Goals foot head Pen
C.Ron 28 14 4 10
Messi 27 24 1 2
Falca 14 6 3 5
Higua 14 14 0 0
Benzm 13 13 0 0
He's running out of arguments. Soon we will be talking about Messi's world cup record again.Okay, so let's just say Villa should take the penalties. Who cares? Why does this even matter?
really? He's running out of arguments. Soon we will be talking about Messi's world cup record again.
You have to admire his persistence.
if you take away ronaldos penaltis, he only scored 4 more goals than higuainThat can't be real? 10 penalties?? SO take away penalties and Ronaldo has 18 goals to Messis 25? So Messi missed one in the league so that means Barca have had 3 penalties whilst madrid have had 10? that's some stat.
Aslo Messi was taking penalties before Guardiola was the manager, so the idea that he's "indulging" him is a bit off.
