I think on this site Liverpool are in a no win situation. If they lose obviously we will,all be delighted and If they win we will simply point to their league position and lack of Europe.

I'd prefer the 4th spot. Not necessarily because of the Champions League but mainly because the league position after 38 games is always a genuine indicator for how good and consistent a squad really is; unlike cup competitions where even APOEL made it to the quarter finals of the Champions League and Manchester United and Manchester City haven't, the league table reflects the quality of a squad much better. Liverpool in their last 17 games have only won 4 and lost 10 games. If the league had started in January, they would get relegated today. And I really don't see how this is going to change next season. Is Carroll going to turn into a professional footballer over night? If I was a Liverpool supporter, a Carling Cup trophy (and eventual FA Cup trophy) couldn't console me over the fact that my team is going into full midtable mode in the medium term.
Can Liverpool get relegated next season? Sounds silly? Well, here's something to think about. In La Liga this season it is still a shock for everyone to see how little Levante is fighting for a CL spot when last season they only finished 15th in the table. But people have somehow ignored that in the second half (last 19 games) of the previous season Levante were already doing as good as this season. If last season the league had started in January, they would have finished 6th and only 2 points away from a CL spot. This season Levante only continued with their second half form from the previous season. If Liverpool do the same ...
I agree, but its not just 1 season. They havent been in the CL for a few years.
This was the year they were supposed to compete with the summer signings and money spent... They are 8th.
That said, if they win 2 cups, it will be a good season for the new Liverpool. Not the club most of their fans remember tho. Nowhere near challenging in the league.
Any talk of them already being favourites for the Europa League next season? Surely they must be...

I just love the irony of Liverpool supporters. They go on and on about "plastic" clubs and "glory supporters," meanwhile romanticising about their successful history filled with trophies and cite that as their reason to support the club. Don't they see what they are saying at all?

The league certainly was a big big failure. They've spent so much money. The cups are a compensation. Would never prefer them though.

I'm pretty sure Liverpool's chairman at the time blamed Heysel on Chelsea Headhunters and members of the National Front.
Stickers would have been just as effective with the top part. Invoking Hillsborough loses them any credibility, not that I imagine they give a feck.

Liverpool appallingly blamed Chelsea fans for Heysel... Chelsea have as much right to be angry with Liverpool as the Liverpool fans do to be angry at the misrepresentation of Hillsborough in the Sun.
Liverpool go on and on about how badly they were treated with Hillsborough - but they never mention what they did at Heysel. They almost try to forget it ever happened.
Do they have a remembrance day on the anniversary of the Heysel disaster in the same way they do for Hillsborough? They don't. And they should, because it was their fans who were directly responsible but never took responsibility, and took 20 years to say sorry for it.
It's perhaps not the right thing to do, but Chelsea fans do have a right to be angry at the way Liverpool blamed them for Heysel.
You hear all the time about justice for the 96... I think it's good also to sometimes mention justice for the 39.
