Doesn't have to be great but if he can come in and do a job from time to time so Evra doesn't have to play every single game, that would be lovely.

Wow he looks pretty good in that vid. Never seen him play mind.
Like his interview as well.

Oh well, let's hope he can play a bit.'

Living in Holland and being an expert on De Eredivisie I should know lots about him. The truth is that I'd never even heard of him before yesterday. Hope this helps.

At 23 he's got the potential to develop but also the experience to be adequate cover for Evra, seems like a smart, cheap punt to me.

I read a few times in the other thread that he'll be our cover for years to come, even when Fabio returns.

Needless to say, we have no idea how Fabio will do here. I love the twins to bits, but clearly Fabio is a few years away from even looking like a United regular.

Buttner may end up being better than what's expected of him. I just don't think people should just shrug him off as "just a cover for Evra". If Fabio has a nightmare loan, you have to ask the question - what will happen to him?

I've never watched Buttner play, so he may be absolutely dog shite. But it did annoy me how some on here just completely blew him off as just being a passenger without even knowing what type of player he could transform into.

Not every unknown player we sign is a Bebe. Some end up as a Hernandez.

Anyone see this?

"Their interest came as a surprise to United’s Dutch scout Ed van Stijn, who has admitted that when the club asked him for the best players in each position amongst players in the Dutch league he only had Buttner at “number three or four.” The player joined Vitesse at the age of 16 from the Ajax youth system and made over 100 appearances in four seasons with the Dutch side after making his debut in the 2008-09 season.

Buttner was part of the long-list for Holland’s Euro 2012 but failed to make the 23-man squad although van Stijn believes he should have been chosen ahead of Jetro Willems for the tournament this summer. He was the subject of interest from Southampton early last month while Fulham saw a bid of £1.55million rejected earlier this summer. Southampton’s interest came to an end after Buttner informed Vitesse that a third party needed to be paid out of the transfer proceeds, a move that scuppered the bid. Buttner then took the club to a tribunal claiming breach of contract, and although he lost the case it has been rumoured in some quarters that Vitesse slashed his transfer fee to around 3million euro (£2.4million) to get him out of the club. Buttner has spent pre-season training away from the rest of the first team."

Bit worried that our own scout only rated him 3rd or 4th best leftback in Holland. Also, even more worrisome, is this third party that required a cut of the transfer fee. Suspiciously like the Bebe deal, this one sends out some bad vibes

Why is that? This is a guy who has played in a champions league final mind you.

Is he normal?
He'll be a back up for Evra. And he came cheap. We've spent quite a bit of dosh this window so I think ticks all the boxes for SAF.

I doubt many would have had Hernandez as Mexico's best striker too when we signed him.

Exactly, players automaticaly get in ahead of others if they're playing at a top club, then again you have to be skillfull in order to play for a top club. That or just be a nobody, in which case you're not getting games any way.

So according to our dutch scout he was the third or fourth best left back in Holland.

I know nothing about this Buttner guy but he seems to be fairly experienced, versatile and cheap. Under such circumstances that's exactly what we need.

not that I'm saying either were, but I find RvP to be more of a "panic buy" than Buttner, although both have "a case".
A 'panic buy' that we've been planning for over 6 months?

Third or fourth best left back in Holland is not that bad. He is only here as cover, we can't expect Ashley Cole to play second fiddle to Evra! You don't always have to buy the best players and at 23 he has a lot of room to improve.

Someone who our scout believes should have been in the Dutch squad for the Euros can't be a bad backup option. Not expecting him to set the world alight, but it is backup we were looking for after all. Much better than spalshing 20M+wages on Baines warming the bench.

So, we finally get the left back everyone has been craving all summer in order to now be able to rest Evra & give him some competition. Said left back is young, has potential, seems to have a great attitude, and is relatively cheap. And as a bonus, he comes with a promising youtube video!

Cafe is happy right? Well no. Apparently not. The mind boggles.

Definitely some bad juju. It does cast a bit of a dark cloud over the transfer. Only natural to be concerned about a player vs a posse.

Eh if his club slashed his transfer fee then how come we're paying a fair bit more than the other clubs? I guess to agent and third party but er... Seems like with our fee we're paying more to them than to the club... If thats the case is it really any better than paying an agent £6 million to have Hazard or Moura's services? £6 million being more than we're reported to have paid for Buttner, but a very small percentage of the total transfer fee whereas with Buttner it would be most of the transfer fee going to agent/3rd party. Weird.

Yeah, I don't quite get what's this all about either really. Would people really expect the best left backs in the dutch league to be happy warming the bench at United in 95% of the games? Getting a seemingly decent backup for Evra for very little money is a great piece of business as I see it. Fabio is most likely still the most likely to take over from Evra, but he needs game time to improve, so getting another young (and experienced) backup while Fabio isn't at the club seems ideal. Even if it doesn't work out we can probably sell him for almost as much as we paid (THINK ABOUT THE RESALE VALUE!).

Well we needed fullback cover so fingers crossed this guy has talent. Shame he's not taller, could have potentially been used as a make shift centre back.

that's why I wrote it down as a "panic buy" not a panic buy, as it obviously wasn't a last minute sort of deal, BUT Fergie himself did just very recently say he never expected something like this, as he though he would always stay at Arsenal, I doubt he'd then be sure for such a long period of time after saying something like that.

What I ment by "panic buy" is that it's a big name signing which most fans have been craving for, it shuts most of them up about us not signing top players. In all honesty we didn't need Van Persie, or basicaly we didn't need a striker, but he's obviously quality so I've got no problem with that, not money out of my pocket at the end of the day. You should still be able to get my point.

And if you check my previous post again, I did say "I think neither of them are panic buys, but if I had to pick between the two..."

RVP adds a bit more to the squad than this lad though. Buttner seems to essentially be cover but I don't understand where he's going to fit in and what this means for Fabio. Surely Fabio should be chosen ahead of him? I don't think he's too far away from being there yet.

He says that every scout, has to write out top 10 lists for every position in a team and then submit it. So I don't think that scouts list is anything that important. Most clubs have scouts in individual nations giving out recommendations and lists and i'm sure it's up to the more senior scouts to go watch him more closely.
