For that sole DM, I think Makelele is just one of all time best. Madrid and Chelsea just collapsed when he retired. I don't think he's limited as many see him as a mere third CB.
I'm of the same opinion but those voting said otherwise.

And I'm glad KM took Ronaldo, was scared about Stobzilla getting him!

Yes I'm a little bit confused as to who to start and who not to start in the midfield.

Sammer and Breitner in the same team along with Messi and Ronaldo at the top

Cruyff and Mardona on the same team is great, Cruyff is arguably the best star you can get who you don't need to worry about pairing up with other stars too much IMO.
Interesting, I'd say the exact opposite! Versatile is an understatement andof course very team-orientated but at the same time I've seen few players try to run the game like he did. Di Stéfano, Beckenbauer, Maradona...very few others. Whereas Pelé and Messi are unbelivably talented but somehow found a way to exert their phenomenal influence over the game without really trying to take the limelight and run the show. Likewise for Best and Ronaldo x2. That's what I like about wingers actually - they're not necessarily selfless players but they're providers and stick to their relatively simple tasks, allowing the other attackers to really run things.

That's not a criticism of Thisistheone's team at all btw, he has one of the most selfless runners in the draft up front which is a huge bonus and Charlton's only flaw was that he went for the shot too often, other than that he was a perfect team player. I think he can make it work.

No I clarified it with Anto before making the pick.

These are the rules

Nationality constraint: No side can field more than one player from each nation (i.e. no Xavi AND Iniesta, although one could be a sub). Before this gets us into a right mess, let's establish the following:
A Nation is defined as one that has or has had a national team participating in FIFA competitions (e.g. no Catalunya).
If a player has played for two NTs, the NT of birth applies (e.g. Di Stefano is Argentinian).
If a player played for a multi-nation NT (e.g. Yugoslavia), their NT is defined as that of their city of birth. This is so that there is a greater pool of nations to pick from. No debate on ethnicity or heritage will be entertained. It's a football draft, not a politics debate.

Your point about wingers etc is spot on, great assets who won't upset the team balance when other stars arrive.

What I said about Cruyff was more in relation to certain other players, like your man de Stefano. I think trying to pair him up with another star is more disastrous than doing so with Cruyff if you get what I mean. And also yes, Cruyff versatility and astounding team game/ethic is what really prompted my comments.

I don't even know who Varela is.
Obdulio Varela, Uruguayan WC winning captain in 1950, defensive midfielder who isn't to be fecked with. Great personality and character, prior to the final he apparently got his teammates to piss all over several copies of a newspaper which already decided that Brazil would win the WC!
I wonder if the anecdote is the best part about the selecton though, in relation to Dan's team.
And this is why neutrals should not be picked randomly to decide games.

Cling always favours recent players + a few flash oldies. Nothing wrong with that mate, and many prefer to stick to what they know, which is fair enough. It's fine to vote on that basis, but it's not good enough for me as an objective and fair all-or-nothing game-deciding mechanism.

I'm going for this guy

The one I wanted to go for before being drawn with NM :( Awesome player. See what I meant about you and thisistheone being in a state of flux? You can look at completely reworking your side without worrying too much about who will play instead of whatever Brazilian fullback you had. Same with him and Garrincha.

The best player in Europe from the mid 50s paired up with the best player from the mid 60s...yes please. Welcome to your new home Eusébio. Pretty ecstatic he made it all the way through to be honest. Pairs up perfectly with Di Stefano in the sense that they both played in a team that had top class wide players that really stretched the pitch, he offers a physical presence up top and of course it adds another Ballon d'Or winner to the attack to along with Sir Stan and Don Alfredo. Was hoping to pair up Puskás and Di Stéfano all along because I was sure this man would go first - great nationality, even better player and even better fit because of his undeniably impressive physique.

Stobzilla - Matthaus
Antohan - Beckenbauer
Brwned - Baresi, Eusébio
Cutch - Edwards, Figo
NM - Figueroa, Maldini
Thisistheone - Cruyff, Garrincha
KM - Breitner, Ronaldo
DanNistlerooy -Platini, Ferenc Puskás

With all the new players added, I see some fantastic teams shaping up. I can´t wait for it all to continue, will follow every little step along the way into the final. So far I have three favourite teams so it won´t be easy to vote in all games I can say!

And I´m happy that some of my players still have the chance for glory!

Completely understand what you're saying but I disagree to an extent. I think Cruyff's "philosophy" has pros and cons in the sense that of course it's all about universality and working towards a collective goal etc. etc. and that works in your favour, but at the same time it was very much his philosophy. There's a few quotes which I can't find at the moment which allude to Cruyff being the one to blame for the breakup of that Ajax side. Of course the main reason for it was the captaincy fiasco but there were a couple of Ajax players that since said Cruyff's personality caused a lot of rifts in the team because he, as Hulshoff put it, put himself in an "exceptional" position.
Hulshoff (Ajax said:
‘Keizer was more about the team. Johan put himself in a more exceptional position; so when things had to be done for the team, Piet Keizer was better.’
Pretty sure your boy Krol was one of the ones who said Cruyff was "difficult" to play with. I can't see Cruyff or Maradona happy to let the other dominate the ball and I can definitely see personality clashes there, but in a one-off game I suppose they could make exceptions. Certainly I'd agree that it's easier to fit him in the team than Di Stéfano but purely because of that added bit of acceleration allowing him to play in more positions - in terms of how they impose themselves on the pitch I see them as eerily similar. Though of course Don Alfredo was more of a winner.

Been watching some video's and documentaries on Garrincha. Amazing. Worth picking him just to learn more.

As I said, you went down the road of taking calculated risks, which can be very very tricky. IMO, he wasn't worth it, you could pick Facchetti from me, and he is the better player anyway, unless you want him at CB...

KM did screw my next pick though. No more Easter eggs for him :nono:

Chaps, my pick is ready but my assistant has gone AWOL and wouldn't want to upset him going with something we haven't discussed.

Facchetti wasn't better than Maldini at all IMO, would always have picked Maldini first.

Aye, his life's full of absolutely fascinating stories. Tragic loss to the footballing community.

Where's Figueroa? And who will play instead of Tardelli? He is actually picking this way in anticipation of getting Beckenbauer into his midfield! :nono:
How would you feel about Figueroa in midfield? He enjoyed the role the last time he played Der Kaiser...
