The same can be said of Ronaldo who isn't the same player as he was from 06-07.

Both have become more effective and less entertaining.

Rooney is still a fantastic player, but he needs to be used correctly.

We now no longer HAVE to rely on him, we have another player in the same calibre.

Instead of just using him as a work horse doing doggies up and down the touchline, we should be placing him where he can do damage.

We have enough hard working players in the squad - it just fustrates me seeing him bust a lung and then being too tired to actually contribute properly.

Sure he did 1 good pass to RVP, but it was hardly Xaviesque, it was a straight ball about 5 yards that any of us could of done.

Anyway hope to see him back behind RVP in the CF role when we are at the home leg.

Madrids defence are wobbly for sure, i can see them 2 ripping them apart.

I know lots of people want him to play in his best position behind the striker but I really don't think we have a good enough midfield to let Rooney play further forward. Time and again this year we've looked like getting run over in midfield and Rooney's had to play deep and help out. I think Fergie trusts Rooney to a job for the team and help us out in midfield where we're weaker. He's always chasing back and tackling while Evra bombs forward and casually jogs back so I think until we get someone else in midfield or on our wings who's going help improve us, Fergie will continue to rely on Rooney to help out. And with RvP here now, Rooney doesn't need to play upfront all the time anyway and thus we see Rooney deep. It's not the best thing for Rooney individually but it's for the good of the team and that's where he'll continue to play unless we're playing against a not too strong team.
And anyway, even without the stats, I think he's had a very good season and a couple of bad games seem to distort some people's opinions on the entire season.

Anyone seen Stephen Howard's dire article on the sun website?

Just seen that, never produces in the big occasion apparently.

You do wonder whether, at 27, his best times are already behind him. And that a move now would rekindle the flame.

Jesus Christ! What the feck is wrong with this country? He's been brilliant the 4-5 games before Madrid, and played 90 mins in all of them. He was great against Brazil too. I understand the frustration with Rooney but even if he hasn't realised that dynamic potential he had in his teens he's still a brilliant footballer.

You wonder if they do any fecking research, Rooney's record in the Knockout stages is pretty fecking good.

What bothered me about the Real game is that we basicaly molded our team around Madrid insteaf of imposing ourselves on the game and make them "figure out" what to do.
We had a good result, but I can't help but think how the game would've turned out had we played Rooney as a CF behind RvP instead of on the wings, I think it's safe to say Rooney would've had more of an impact on the game and who knows, the result might have turned out even better for us (not trying to be captain hindsight here btw)

It is frustrating, as yes he hasn't turned into a goal machine like Messi or Ronaldo, but the importance he brings to Man United is indespensable. He is such an important player for us, and I think many critics would only realise this once he has gone. Very lazy journalism.

Has this been Rooneys worst season with us to date?

Not saying he won't come good like...

Let's wait till the end of the season.

Yeh, I agree. You quoted me just before I edited.

I have no doubt, he will build on his performances. He'll come good when it matters, he usually does.

So far though, he has played way below his ability this season.

Wonder if he's concealing granny shagging again?

He has had a stop start season but showed up for the big away games against Chelsea and City. The only bad performance I remember was the one away at Swansea. Tough to blame him at Madrid, when he was hurled in an unfamiliar position on the right. Anyways, he was good in the first half.

Statistically he is up there with the best - 13 goals and 10 assists in 23 starts and 3 sub appearances. That's a goal and assist in each game he has started or 0.88 in all appearances.

If that is his worst then......

He's had a lot more injuries this season than most others. His performances have been good apart from a few.

I think SAF's ability to adapt his team in certain matches is among the numerous that make him a great coach.

The stats don't lie. Couple that with the great partnership and help he has given RVP to be the main goalscorer, and I'd say he's had a decent season so far.

Is it just me being dim? Take ForeverGiggs Stats he supplied

Starts : 23
Subs : 3
Goals: 13
Assists: 10

I think you mean or, rather than AND, he has a goal or an assist each game on average bar his sub apps.

A quick mathematical sum will tell you that he meant "OR".

Where'd you get that from? SAF said everyone apart from Jones was fit in his presser.

Yeah Sky have been mentioning that he's out of the QPR game but I wouldn't believe those reports. However considering the sort of start stop season he's had due to various injuries and illnesses, it wouldn't be a shock. We could do with him vs QPR.

Would say he's been better this season than he was in his debut season, 07/08 and pretty similar overall to 06/07.

Cue another few weeks of moaning and bitching and calls for him to be sold.

It's alright, one day when Rooney is on form and gets that understanding with RVP it's going to be

I wonder how the reaction to Rooney will be when he eventually retires as quite possibly our top scorer (In the League, Europe and All time)...

In fairness, if you spend nearly 20 years as a striker working at a goal-scoring record, you're bound to achieve it. I'd imagine most other competitiors racked up their goals in far less time.

So far he hasn't spent his entire career here working towards the record. He hasn't always been the main man to get the goals for the club.

If he does end up owning the record - it will be because of his consistency plus long service to the club - which on it's own should garner a lot of respect for years to come. That he has played with a lot of heart and commitment towards the team rather than self would be another reason to recall his time at United with great admiration.

In the end though with fans today so easy to say "sell him" due to a dip in form and/or the arrival of another quality player - I think he may not be recalled as fondly as some of the clubs past greats by my many.

Rooney cant be measured on goals alone. He is contributing to the team without scoring by his brilliant link up play and defensive effort. In big games Fergie can count on doing the hard work for the team - just look at the Real game. That said his goal scoring ratio isnt bad either. I know he burned some bridges with his contract negotiations and some fans will never forgive him that, but as a footballer he is brilliant for us and beside Carrick and RvP our most important player imo.

We do have some 'fans' who are absolutely nuts.

Imagine Ancelotti asking Ibrahimovic to play on the wing. He'd get kicked in the face and Zlatan would leave.

It's not been a vintage season for Rooney, but when we've asked him to do a job he's gone out and done it with a great work ethic. That alone deserves credit. From going from the nucleus of the team scoring 30 odd goals to being asked to play in every position other than GK or defence, takes a real man to do it without making a fuss.

I dont know what people expect from Rooney. Even this season, where he has been shuffled around all over the place and had to live with being pushed from "main man" spot into a deeper role, he has still been amongst our best players. Only Carrick, RVP and Evra have been more important and influencial than him.

And this is "his worst season" apparantly. I think he was a lot worse that season with the transfer bollocks. He was shite for large spells of the season but masked it with goals that came out of nowhere. This season he has been working extremely hard almost every game. His defensive work for such a creative and attacking player is out of this world.

Well he wouldn't, would he? He'd ask the 'other bloke', whoever that may be -to play on the wing instead.

As good as Rooney is, it is partly due to him not establishing himself as the Ibrahimovic of the team, if you like, that he is an option to be moved wide. Messi can play wide too, but he'll be played where he is best. For obvious reasons.
