Got to say this would be a muppet-tastic signing. More so even than the likes of Sneijder, Modric or Ozil would have been.

Don't get me wrong I want this to happen.

But it's really not as big a signing as those you mentioned would have been. Although in a few years it might turn out being better.

It's similarish to signing Nani.

We're getting him at the right time imo. Moving to United and featuring more regularly will springboard him into his national side for the WC, which I'm sure is a priority for him (and his Dad) given that its in Brazil.

Agree with you on modric as he's have slotted right into our CM but Thiago's much better suited to our team than Ozil or Sneijder would have been.

Maybe muppet-tastic was the wrong description. I guess muppetry is based solely on star status, rather than factors like whether or not it's the right type of player.

In my view at least, it's a better signing than any of the others would have been.

Hope Moyes can press the reset button with Nani. He and Thiago operating together would be quite spectacular.

It's more of a Rooney signing. He's more well known than all of Nani, Ronaldo, and Anderson when we signed them. There is an air of inevitable success too.

He is not a force of nature that 17 year old Rooney was, but midfielders are different than strikers.

More solid media have pretty much nothing to report on Nani.

He's United bound just like Rooney isn't for sale.

I disagree, but only because Rooney was the biggest superstar teenage signing of all-time, very few transfers compare to the hype and size of that one. £30 Million for a 18 year old. But agree to disagree.

Ronaldo was considered one of the very best youngsters in world football when we signed him. So not sure it would be on that scale

I think Thiago has been described in similar terms to be fair, but not a big deal so agree to disagree. Thiago is one of Barca's prized prospects, and has already done more in the game than Ronaldo had (100+ games for Barca), so to me it's quite similar.

my recollection of that summer when we signed Nani is that we hardly knew about the player and the transfer.
Nah, ourselves and Tottenham had been heavily linked with Nani that summer. Anderson was out of the blue, however. There had been nothing linking us with him.

Rooney is the best analogy I could come up with. Milan signing Pato is probably a better example.

Correct. Everyone expected Nani.

It was the greatest transfer night ever. A shame Ando turned out a bit meh, mind you.

Nothing like the Rooney signing. Everybody could claim to have an in depth knowledge to Rooney the player after his exploits for Everton and England in Euro 2004. I can reckon the majority on here have only seen a few instances of Thiago.

And Nani's probably off as well for less than what we paid

I remember the night fondly. As a teenager coming home late at night, turning on Sky Sports News to see we'd signed Nani and the next Ronaldinho.

If Thiago signs, I can't help but feel that we'll be moving to a 3 man midfield - and that could hasten Rooney's exit.

Realistically, I can't imagine us keeping Rooney if we buy the likes of Thiago and Ronaldo. There would need to be some sort of income to offset club record buys like that, should they actually happen.

Doubt it, who would we play in a three with Carrick and Thiago?

Dropping one of our forwards would be nuts just to fit someone like Clev in the team, our forwards are our best players.

Little did we know they were talking about the overweight and lazy part of Ronaldinho's game rather than his ability. We could have done with knowing that at the time really.. :(

The cantona and andy cole transfers will never be beaten for sheer shock and out of the blueness.

Like the way you've just thrown Ronaldo's name in there too!

If we bought Ronaldo, Rooney wouldn't even be an after thought!

That was one of my major concerns regarding Thiago, his ability to slot into a two man midfield. Having watched him in the U21 European Championship though, I'd feel comfortable with him and Carrick in the centre of the park.
Allegedly Moyes wants to utilise him like he did Arteta, and if I'm not mistaken that was in a two man midfield.
