This rumour just makes absolutely no sense. I know we're always looking to improve, but Garay really would be an unnecessary signing.

Hmm, how so? We leaked goals at the start of last year when we had injury problems in defence. Maybe Rio and Vidic are not seen as reliable anymore. And by that, I mean reliable in a sense that we can expect them to go the entire season with an injury.

My first concern would be how detrimental his signing could be to the development of Evans, Smalling, and Jones. It would be less playing time for the three.
Rio and Vidic are no spring chickens, and aren't going to play every game this season, but I feel we've more than adequate cover in that position.
The other concern would be the likely fee, which would probably be in the teen millions. We've a requirement for two midfielders, in my opinion, and should focus our spending on there.

We wouldn't have signed Rio on for another year if he wasn't seen as reliable.

At some point in the season, Rio will be out with a back injury. I think we understand that Rio still has the qualities required when fit, but also understand that at some point in the season he will be out for a spell.

That happens to a lot of players. I don't think his fitness has been a problem last season. If I remember correctly he missed the start, but has been regularly fit afterwards.

What would that have to do with Garay though?

We have several young and a youngish CB who all want first team starts. Why would we sign someone who is older and not better?

The sensible and most likely thing to do is make another Smalling signing. A young player who can cover and develop in training/being around the squad with designs on becoming a first teamer in the future. We've been linked with Zouma, he's a big talent so maybe not him. But another promising young player would be far more likely than Garay

Garay would have been as a pointless (and potentially harmful) signing as Song to Barca. This is probably the signing I will be least excited if it happens, even less than Fellaini. Unless Vidic leaves (which I hope he doesn't), in that case it will be a new situation and we would need an extra defender, so Garay would have been a good to great signing.

How reliable are Futbol_Mercado?

You've just described Michael Keane.

Why pay €80m for a 29 year old, who will be a free agent in 12 months ?

We could just give him a €40m signing on fee next summer and buy Thiago & Strootman with the change.

Transfer policy is confusing me this summer.

He's 28, and he'll be a free agent in 24 months, so we can only sign a pre-contract with him in 18 months time.

If he only had 12 months left on his contract Madrid would be jumping at €80m

Probably because he's 28 and has two years on his contract.

Because he's 28 and he won't be a free agent on next summer, but on summer of 2015. And because he's pretty good with a football.

Somebody described them as a 'respected Spanish media outlet'. I've never heard of them, so I don't know what to make of it.

Well no not really, since we went out into a bidding war for Smalling after barely a sniff of first team football and paid a significant amount for him. We dont know the same would be the case for Michael Keane if he wasnt a United player. Its a big step up from reserves to first team football

If Vidic left we'd need one of the best defenders in the world to replace him. Not Garay. We'd have been served just as well promoting Evans and bumping Smalling and Jones up the pecking order.

Well, it could easily be Rio's final year, so we definitely need another defender cause only 3 are not enough. I would say that Garay is at Evans level though I must admit that I haven't seen much of him since his transfer to Portugal.

Michael Keane will probably be at the level that Smalling was IMO this coming season, I wouldn't be surprised if he got a PL loan. Maybe a little bit behind due to Smaalings size, but talent wise he's up there.
