Jones should've hoofed it clear though. Our central defenders don't hoof when they have to and hoof when they have absolutely no pressure on them.

Again I wonder if those David Luiz rumours were true. I'm not saying him but we need centre backs who are quick and good on the ball. Vidic is neither now.

Last season once he came back we were far more solid and he was outstanding for us.. didn't get given as much credit because of his injuries for the first half of the season.

This seems like poor form for everybody, he might not be at his peak standards but he's still a top class defender, possibly still the best in the league - I'd only consider Kompany to be at his standard, and he had a bad season last year too.

Still our best center half though. Rio would have just completely stood off Altidore all game.

We need to stop making excuses and start picking players on form. Evans and Smalling have both had better showings than Vida and Ferdinand this year. Merit should mean something.

Jones did him no favours, but he's a world class centre half, trying that sort of thing and getting it wrong is criminal. But after that he warmed to the task and really did well with the balls that were launched towards our box.

I worry when he gets dragged out wide or chases a player to the half way line because it means hes either getting a yellow card or done for pace in behind him. Bar the three botched attempt clearances in the last two matches, in the box, hes still fantastic.

Outside the box however he looks 40.

Eh, no he wasn't. That is your opinion, but I think many will disagree.
Don't think many would disagree. Vidic was fantastic vs. Shakhtar. No one came close to him in our team, not even Rafael, who was beaten a couple of times. To say he's poor this season is an overstatement. This was the first game where his all-round performance was shocking. Other than that, he's been very solid.

Uncharacteristic errors from Vidic but I wouldn't write him off. Still our best defender by a mile, he just needs to be used sparingly imo.

Vidic's first touch reminded me of when I was younger, an opposition player injured my mate with a bad tackle. So I decided to get retribution by 'miscontrolling' the ball in his direction, thus allowing me a chance to lunge in. I got the first one horribly wrong and they broke and almost scored, but the second one gave me the perfect chance to leave a nasty one on him. Maybe Vidic was up to something similar?

What is it with people who can't fathom that ANY fullback will be beaten. Evra is flogged on here for being beaten twice or thrice in the match today. The goal was completely Vidic's fault - no doubt!

Vidic was good against Shaktar, but not outstanding, imo of course.

Rafael was beaten a couple of times, not once, actually. Vidic had more to deal with throughout the game and did so well. Yes, he was culpable for Shakhtar's goal, but he was definitely better. It's irrelevant anyway because even if Vidic wasn't as good as Rafael, it still doesn't mean he's had a poor season. He's been good/very good in most games, with the exception of today's game, where he was mediocre and looked off the pace, which is no surprise, considering he's played two games in a week.

It wasnt completely Vidic's fault. Evras tackle was an embarassment, and Jones should probably have cleared

Evra looks drained of confidence but not surprised given our public courting of Baines wish we'd do our signings the Fergie way!

Would have no issue with him wanting to leave for the last few years of his career. Has given us years of outstanding service and will go down as one of our best ever defenders.

With the situation at United, the whole new era starting, his age and the number of quality young defenders coming through, I think Vidic will be off next season or the year after. It will be sad to lose him but we have to do it eventually. It wouldn't be kicking him to the curb, I think both parties will realise that it's time.

Same goes for Rio. However, I can't see us losing both in the same season. One will stay on while the other moves on in my opinion.

Mental to let him go, especially if you assume it's Rio's last season. I think some people will only see how good he is/was when he leaves. He's top class.

Tevez stirring the pot.

‘Vidic should join Juventus – he’s very suitable for the Italian league,’ said the Argentine striker.
‘He’s very strong and a very good defender. I played with him at United and then against him when I moved to Manchester City.’

He had one bad half against Sunderland. Overall he's played well this season.

Mistake against Sahtar led to goal, again mistake against Sunderland let to goal, and he seems insecure to me atm, not playing with his well known authority.

I think it's just him slowly getting into the form, once he hit his top gear there's few better than him, that's why I hope this contract thing is false, wouldn't want to see him leave United, not while he has some time left to play on top level.

Not playing at his best atm, but still our best defender.
He is - without doubt. It might be a case of too much changing and chopping. I think Vidic works best when he gets a run of games alongside the same partner. If I were Moyes I'd go for Vidic and Evans this season - and take it from there. I won't pretend I'm not a bit worried, however. With some players it's a matter of knowing when to let them go. Vidic could be in that category. It could - I say could - be beneficial for both him and United with a change of scenery come next summer. We have Evans, Jones and Smalling all waiting in the wings to a lesser or greater degree. If we are to go for what we have, rather than bringing in someone, it might be time to let these lads take over. We have talents coming up as well - Keane not least.

Aside from that mistake against Shakhtar he was probably MOTM. Sunderland goal was his fault for sure, but in the second half he sorted himself out and was fine. In short, I think you're overreacting because in general when he has played this season he has been solid.

Same could be said about most of Rio's game this season, but one mistake per game led us all to thinking he is past his best. Not comparing those two, because Vidic clearly looks better this season, but he probably costed us 3 points with that mistake, so no excuses, let's hope he won't do that again.

I don't think Rio's been anything special this season, and for me he is definitely past his best.

Vidic may be past his best too, but he has demonstrated a few really solid performances already this season so he is still capable of performing to a high standard. People wrote him off last season too, but he came back very strongly in the second half of the season.

Still the best in England (when Kompany isn't around) . If we had a CL final tomorrow Vidic would be one of the first names on the sheet.

He's had a few shaky moments this season but you must remember that he is playing with different partners all the time. I'm not worried about Vidic.

Did you miss second part of my post?

I don't care about the rest of the game if he makes mistake that costs us point(s).

I'm used to see confident Vidić performances, and those shaky moments aren't sign of someone playing with confidence and ease, but as I said it the part you clearly haven't read :D it's just him getting into the full gear, nothing to panic about.
