Hopefully he shows his standout 1994 performances and doesn't stomp off on in a rage if the facilities aren't up to scratch.

Yeah he was excellent, few others in that team were as well

This always makes me laugh

And then I get people telling me I jumped the gun with Ghiggia... I had him as a possible late option.

Crap, now have to choose between two players. The one I don't pick I will certainly lose. :annoyed:

Well, with Marzolini (my backup choice) gone it must be him. Love him to bits and I don't fancy the next tier at all.

I pick Frank de Boer

He's happy to join Davids again after their brilliant performances for the Netherlands in 98. Probably the best centerback of the tournament outside of that outstanding French defense.

That's pretty fair. Not a huge fan of De Boer at Barcelona, but he had a strong tourney in France.

He really had and he's imo a perfect fit for my team. Loved him in van Gaal's Ajax team, agree on his time at Barca.

Junior was actually my first choice as well, but I needed someone pre-70, so I'm happy with Marzolini. Agree about the drop of quality in this position now, was going mental when looking for leftbacks .

Same here. I dislike him so much I couldn't consider him anyway but he had a solid tourno.

Good then because I preferred Junior being post-70! We have the basis for of a good non-aggression pact here. Hehehe.

Non-aggression pacts with a German is the definition of gullibility.

BTW, I know it is an underdogs theme and Brazil weren't exactly a small footballing nation, but Junior deserves special dispensation for being so cool anyway.

He even put together a Carnival song that became the NTs official 1982 song:

Why? Not that you need a reason to dislike a Dutch footballer, just curious?

You covered much of it with the Dutch bit (arrogance), the other part was I've always been a huge Barca fan (up until tiki taka, it was the old Barca I liked) and he was complete dogshit, and seemed to be convinced he was the dog's bollocks. Couldn't stand the sight of him. Much of that late Dutch brigade was stealing a living.

Fair enough, the whole van Gaal spell at Barca became a disaster in 99 (and was far from perfect before). Still can't believe that they actually brought van Gaal back for a 2nd spell  after he failed so miserably with the Dutch nationalteam.

Aye you're a man after my own heart Anto. De Boer was always great on the ball, but was physically lacking for Barcelona, either through a lack of pace or getting beat in the air (I remember Carew murdering him regularly on headers). Cocu and to a lesser extent Kluivert earned their crusts, but the others were culpable in Barca not being able to compete for Champions Leagues at that time.

De Boer was world-class in Ajax and the Dutch national team and his peak performance as an individual was 1998 so he deserves all the cred in the world.

He was generally good in '94 as well as '98 so there shouldn't be any need to revisit his Barca form.

He just never lived up to being XXX's heir. Pace was probably not a huge difference but physically the gap was horrendous. Agree on Cocu and Kluivert, it was the wide players which were pointless, one even went on to steal a living at Chelsea

I guess the upside of how despondent I was about that team was I had a lot more time to watch United!

Well there is one obvious name, and one I know you are quite fond of and would tick a few boxes of what you need.

I would be surprised if you don't pick either of them in the next two picks.

JUNIOR
 That was one of the ones I was talking about. Was clear as daylight you would go for him, specially as you mentioned almost going for Nilton last time around.

I was quite tempted to pick him but I sacrificed him for the Golden Ball trio up front, a deal I would make 10 times out of 10.

I knew you meant him and, seeing as you could use him, that helped me go there first. :D
