Going by this theory, Giroud is twice the player Rooney is.
I'm saying for such a great player he's hardly won any silverware at Madrid. Didn't United make the CL final the year after he left and all? Look, I realise he's got his admirers in here, and judging by a couple of the responses, playing Devil's advocate can upset people....but come on Vato, for all his goals, what the hell have you won?

Be honest, did you shed a tear when you saw him cry? You still love him deep down inside, don't you? It's blatantly obvious Lyon, you have a man crush on Ronnie, just admit it, we're all friends here.

It is the old "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." Whilst Cristiano Ronaldo is scoring goals left, right and centre, very few others are contributing. However, as I have mentioned many months ago; my only gripe with Ronaldo is that he tries to shoot from impossible angles and some crazy distances when in reality he could have played his teammates in to score. I am sure this has happened in matches that they have actually drawn or lost. If he had chosen the option of passing to teammates in better positions, I'd hedge a bet that Real Madrid would have won more games, and also scored more goals to boot.

More than every other club in the world.

In all seriousness, I get what you are saying but it's not like we were far off winning major trophies year after year either. You win some, you lose some I guess. Barcelona have been spectacular in the last couple of years, it's as simple as that.

I didn't actually watch it. I was constructing a spreadsheet at home whilst it was going on. Plus the other half was watching something else. How can I be friends with a Belgian... Only joking Vato.

In Ronaldo's case it happens a lot despite him playing for one of the best club sides in the world. And currently his club are third in La Liga a couple of places below a Messi-less Barca. World player of the year eh?
To be fair, Messi didn't won anything of note the season before that (when he got the last Ballon D'Or).

Also looking at the voting pattern, it is clear to see that managers/players vote either for their mates or more based on popularity. Media people vote for that who had the best year in terms of trophies. The problem is that there are two votes from players/managers and one from media, which makes the trophy a bit more shit than when it was only Ballon D'Or (and was voted only from media).

I think everyone knows Madrid has won bugger all while he's been there, but he appears to be too stubborn to leave until he has won something big. So it goes on.

Without being too brutal. As an outsider it's a wonderful scrap to watch. Barca Vs Madrid - it's got everything, history, politics, financial and sportingl rivalry. And the two best players in the world slugging it out as the face of it all.

It's about time your lot won something again though. Ronaldo's wasted on you.

Cruyff didn't win many tropheys at Barcelona either. Didn't stop him from being the best player in the world at the time along with Beckenbauer.

Perhaps this article, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-Why-Real-Madrid-player-jump-higher-else.html, which puts Ronaldo's vertical around 32" (interestingly, I could jump about the same height during my high school days).

Another article http://www.topendsports.com/testing/results/vertical-jump.htm. If Ralph Sampson could really jump 36" at 7'4, he would be near impossible to defend. Shame injuries basically ruined his career.

Jordan had a vertical of 45-48" depending on which info from any search result you decide to use. The most common number I've heard is 47".

Guys like Kobe Bryant, Dominique Wilkins, Michael Finley, Vince Carter, and Spud Webb had/have high verticals as well. I had often heard David Thompson could out-jump anyone. A high school coach once told me Thompson could grab quarters off the top of the basketball goal (possible hyperbole).
I had a 35-36" standing vertical the last time I was measured when I was 19, in '99! There was a guy who went to Memphis in the mid 90's that allegedly had a 54ish" standing vert, his name was like Mike Wilson or something. He dunked on a 12 foot basketball net once. I believe he is supposedly the highest recorded vertical, at least it was the last time I cared about Basketball back around 2003-2004.

I also have heard the same story about grabbing quarters off the top of the backboard, only I heard it about Shaq and the dude from Memphis. I think that is probably on of those urban myths that gets passed onto whatever the latest freak is.

Shaq if memory serves had around a 34 inch vertical leap. Which is absolutely insane when you think how enormous he is.

The top of the backboard for a regulation height goal is like 14 feet. Realistically speaking, nobody is getting that high.

Take a dude like Vince, he's 6'5? He had 44 or so in his prime. He can get his head slightly above the rim, the top of the backboard is another 4 feet up.

Ronaldo's vertical leap in comparison to an NBA'r wouldn't be impressive at all. In fact it would be rather unimpressive I think (average is unimpressive imo). He's not an especially tall guy. I would imagine with a bit of practice he could dunk, but nothing spectacular. He could get above the rim easily without a ball, but that's the biggest challenge. Coordinating your leaps, 1 footed or 2 footed while holding the ball.

For a guy who probably doesn't have hands big enough to palm a ball, 2h dunking would be easier, but it requires a fair bit more altitude to accomplish.

Gotta remember though, that basketball players are specialists. They are quick and explosive in a lanky package (most of the time). They are as specialized as NFL'ers. Ronaldo is a complete athlete. Fast, quick, explosive.

In general though, basketball players are imho the greatest athletes on the planet. I'm talking pure athleticism. When you play sports to a middling level like I did, you really notice it. You take a guy like me, who was fairly fast 4.6slow 40, 35-36 inch vert, and 6'3-6'4 tall, that's pretty athletic. Now, take a guy who is 6'6 and has similar numbers, the difference is insane, now take a guy who is 6'6+ and has better numbers, faster 40, quicker, more agile, and a higher leap. You're talking about shit that is like 1% of 1% of 1% of 1% of the population type guys. That is Lebron James. Don't get me wrong, a 6'8 ubermensch won't move like a Messi, but he can move like a 6-6'2 guy.

When you understand that size is basically inversely proportionate to coordination and athleticism, a guy like Lebron James is probably the most purely athletic man to live in modern history. He is an absolute freakshow.

Sorry to side track! I just find this sort of stuff fascinating :)

Well done to him. Even though I'd still have Messi as the better player of the two, Ronaldo deserved the award this year.

The Times have a piece on him tomorrow, some quotes from the legend.

It is true Rio and I spoke [in the summer]. He is a fantastic guy and he tried to change my mind to go back to Manchester.
I did think about United. They are still in my heart. It is a club where I played for years and I love that club.
I feckin' love the man, sorry.

He's a different player to when he was here though, and he's been gone a long time now. It doesn't feel like the same player that was here because he's improved to a now incredible level.

And I still don't think he'd have come back last summer even if Fergie was still here. That's the question he needs asking, but I think I know the answer.
