Looking over my shoulder.
We need more technically players at the club. Thats the reality. People go on about the side lacking pace but for me lack of technically ability and first touch are just as much a problem.

A lot of the time when we are on the break this season it has been poor first touch and poor passing/final ball that have cost us. Sure we could use more pace but its only part of the problem.

Breaks involving Mata/Kagawa do seem to go a bit more smoothly.
Then you want to sell Rooney? Have you noticed that he is the one who breaks down play with the short passing, technical game time and time again? I think we want technical players like Mata and Kagawa coupled with a couple of quick ones. Look at Hernandez' last chance - Rooney couldn't have done that as he lacks the pace for it - basically, it's the Mata and Kagawa's that create and others who run in behind, but then you need a little bit of pace. Mata may just be the key though - absolutely brilliant player.

God I love Mata. Best player on the team. For some weird reason, I feel that he and Rooney look alike (I know many will disagree.) Anyway, he must be the #10 moving forward.

So glad we signed a player like Mata, really refreshing. The class of Berbatov but more effective

Playing players out of position is never a good idea imo, so I'd rather see Mata on the bench than see him marooned on the wing!

But Mata should always be in the 14 players that get on the pitch! Giggs used the Subs very well today (piss easy match but still well used!)

But they have Oscar
Not so much selling him but selling him to us. Perhaps Chelsea thought it would just cause disruption with Rooney and Van Persie seeing as Mata can really only play behind the striker, meaning they could have gotten Rooney in the summer or something. Maybe they thought he would help us take points off our rivals but that would be incredibly short sighted. While we didn't necessarily need someone in that area of the pitch, Mata forces us in a direction we probably needed to go in, getting away from playing with two strikers, playing with more control and with technically better players. Just like we didn't want to sell Rooney to a domestic rival, selling abroad would have been a much better idea of their part.

Can not believe Chelsea sold such a talented player to us. Him and the introduction of Januzaj are some of the best thing to come out of Moyes reign. Beit he might not have known much about the deal for the Mata.

I have to say he was my man of the match despite only being on the pitch 30 minutes. Likely and a treat when he came on, like he had something to prove, and yet seems to play the game so effortlessly. He's really started scoring now that he got hi first a few weeks back, though he was after gettign another assit too when he played Hernandez through at the end. Chicharito really should have done better there.

Real class act. Hitting this form now is great for us in regards to confidence at the beginning of next season.

It is a key debate IMO though with Mata in the side, quick in his head and slow covering ground, brilliant going forward but not going backwards how you need to build a team around him with covers for his deficiencies and brings the best out of his talents. A cesc or modric CM for example and your getting into the territory of a team which doesnt really press but keeps posession. And they are two everyone wanted.

He's the kind of player that will always deliver. Very consistent. First name on the team sheet, I would like to see Welbeck in front of him for once this season.

Came on and had an immediate impact, all you can ask for really. Should have had an assist or two as well. He's got to be a central player in our thinking, he's just class.

They probably wouldn't have sold him to us if we weren't so shit this season. I reckon this was Fergie's plan all along when he suggested Moyes, called on us to stand behind him, and have the board offer him a 6 year deal. To have us playing shite under Moyes, lulling Chelsea into thinking we're not title rivals for 6 years then get Mata from them. Genius.

I was quite shocked to see him left out, but there's no better way to make a point than what he did when he came on. My man of the match actually.

I can't wait until he starts doing it against the better clubs though.

15 players have played more than him in the league this season. He's now 4th in goal scoring and 2nd in assists.

Quite amazing really, he's going to be fecking immense when we sign a couple of decent players.

That's a little cheeky that statistic! I think Mata is great though and climbed the ranks of goal scoring quickly, but it shows how we have been lacking goals from the midfield. The assists stat is ace though. Well done Mata.

It was all very simple and open for Mata, but the weight on the pass to Hernandez at the end shows why he is the man to play as an advanced midfield or number 10 or whatever we're calling it.

That technique has to be drilled in when you're up and coming and he is one of very few in this squad who has it.

It's always the simple things which I like the most about Mata.

One of the only City players I like. He seems a decent guy too. Why can't him and Aguero jump ship back to Spain :(
They're financially content. Sure they wouldn't even know who Man City are if they didn't win the lottery.

How Barca went for Sanchez instead of Aguero, and how Real passed on Silva is one of the great mysteries of modern football...

Silva never wanted to leave Valencia for Man City, but the club had to sell him because they were/are drowning in debt due to their botched attempt at building a new glittering Mestalla: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...to-save-Valencia-from-financial-meltdown.html

He's such a great player. 5 goals and 4 assists in 12 games (11 of which were under David Moyes).
Funny thing is after 2 years of being possibly the best playmaker in the league people were saying he was finished just because Mourinho chose Oscar over him. Finished my arse we probably haven't even seen the best of him yet. He's not reliant on pace or physical attributes either i think he can play at a high level for another 8 years. Oscar is a great talent but give me Mata over Oscar anytime especially in the playmaker position.

Christ he's feckin adorable. Really strange hearing him say he was watching Giggs as a United player when he was a boy though.
He was a closet United fan :) Have read about him admiring Giggs when he was a kid. He even has a Giggs' shirt:

Same with Mata. He actually stayed one more year despite his dad saying otherwise and signed a new contract so that Valencia could get a good price for him. Class act.
If it wasn't for their debt nightmare with the Nou Mestalla, Valencia could conceivably been pulling an "Atletico" themselves right now.

Anyways, back on topic, good to see Juan Mata doing well again, after Jose did his best to destroy him. I mean, has the man a secret pact with the devil to destroy good football?

Judging from what I see Everyone would like to see Mata as number 10 role. We probably will end up selling Hernandez.

Villa did the same, he signed a 6 year contract with Valencia in 2008 when every big club in Europe wanted him. I hope Valencia can develop some more players of Mata/Silva/Villa quality within the next few years and then get good fees for them when they sell them. I don't want clubs with great tradition go bust or anything like that.

I think actually the chance he worked with Hernandez at the end shows his lack of pace isn't necessarily a problem.

That was as fast a counter as it gets and Mata carried it forward.

Running with the ball at decent pace and speed of thought is more than enough in the centre of the pitch.

Its all about squads and different options. I dont understand what people mean by we overspent on him, the last two seasons he was arguably one of the top 3 players in the league.
Fair point. But if it's not for longer term then for what we signed Mata? I thought it was a panic buy from Moyes. As a short term, we have 5 players including him 6 are fighting for 2 spots only. While those 5 are very quality players.

While for a long term.. Who knows.

But I feel like that Garry Neville was right that Mata's signing was too expensive for a position which not the main priority we need to sign.
Without stating the obvious, yesterday proves my point irrespective of how many potential number 10's we have.
