Considering that he has been poor for the majority of his time here, I doubt it. How many more years do you think he should get?
I'm not saying he should get another 4 years I'm saying there is a good chance he finds his best form under LVG and that he should be judged by LVG over the next 2-3 weeks and not after the 1st game

A good chance? Based on what?

Also, I don't believe anyone is judging him on one game. He will get his opportunity to impress.

I thought he did ok. Kept things simple and passed the ball well. The through ball to Kagawa was beautifully weighted. Not sure why that particular performance deserves criticism?
Because unless Nani is taking on five players and smashing the ball in from 30 yards on his weaker foot, people aren't interested in what he's actually offering to the side. He's a player that draws the opposition in and one that likes to move the ball quickly. He did that well yesterday but didn't get many chances in front of goal, mainly because his movement in behind is shite. But then again, he's not a striker.

Well, that's not true. I'm probably one of the most critical people on here when it comes to Nani and if he had put in more performances like the other night I wouldn't have been on his case anything like as much as I have been. If anything, it was a good example of why he doesn't need to take five players on and score 30 yard screamers to be an effective player for us. Just a pity he's usually far more careless with the ball and ineffective than he was on Wednesday night.

LVG is giving everyone a clean slate and will assess them in the next few weeks. Thus judging Nani from the last two seasons or more is pointless.
I am hoping Nani will impress him but his future here lies within his own hands.

But when was the last time he had a consistent run in the side? He can be a frustrating player because he tries things and more often than not they don't come off. It's frustrating because we have seen what he is capable of when he's on form, but how on earth is he able to reach them heights when he's not playing week in, week out? Even when he's frustrating, he's dangerous and he usually creates at least something but patience is needed, something many people don't have.

Anyway, reverting back to the original point; Nani put in quite a few performances similar to the one vs LA, last season when he played, and many were still critical. Whether you can pick out the good from the bad is a point specifically based on your ability to analyse a performance, but the vast majority regarding Nani are not interested unless he's producing the spectacular week in, week out; whether he's been frustrating or just merely solid, which was my point.

On the first point, I think it's a dangerous precedent to pick a player regularly unless he's showing you something in training and/or sub appearances. It's just the life of a footballer.

As to the second, I don't think he did put in many performances like this one (or like in the Ireland friendly pre-WC) last season. I thought he put in a lot of what I would consider trademark Nani performances: some good things, some brilliant things, a lot of losing the ball and quite a few decisions that ranged from bad to outright baffling. To my mind Nani hasn't been 'solid' all that often. It's usually either brilliant, not very good but does something decisive, or just plain old not very good. Given where we were with our wingers last season I'd probably have started him for a good run of games to try get either of the first two types of performances out of him, but I can certainly see why an under pressure manager might be put off by the things Nani does at times.

Without a doubt, which is exactly the reason why it's unlikely that Nani will ever return to his best. However, as you say, it's not as if playing Nani would be at the expense of other, in form attacking talent. Would he have been worth the risk for a few games? I'd have probably said last season was the best chance he was going to get had it not been for the managerial circumstance. I agree also, there were many "Nani-esque" performances but from what i saw, there were also several similar performances to the one the other night; his cameo vs Liverpool and a couple of others towards the back end of the season from memory.

Nani just hasn't seemed fired up about football for a couple of seasons now. I hope I'm wrong as there is incredible ability and athleticism in his boots but it may be time for him to move on. But let's see how the next three matches go. I'd love to see some decent play from him.

I was kind of hoping he could find form again under van gaal, and his appearance vs galaxy was pretty good I thought, I'm just not sure where he fits in, or any of the wingers bar Valencia really. They aren't going to be starting up front unless our 3 strikers get injured, and januzaj is probably ahead of them in the pecking order for wings based on last season. Nanis only hope is we sell a striker and #10 and switch to a 4-3-3, a formation where he could really excel, as even though he could do well in a robben like role for us in the 3-5-2, I doubt he'll be used in it much at all.

I wanted him gone last Summer. A wasted year for him, and we'll now recieve less of a transfer fee.

Won't care at all when he leaves. Was excellent on his day, unfortunately those days were barely seen.

Pretty non existent again. Almost seemed to be not interested at times as well.

Needs to do more if he is to stay. Especially more so in this system.

His passing was good, but like the rest of our attack in the 2nd half, wasn't able to get involved enough.

Thought what he did was fine but was too quiet, simply not enough. Needed to get on the ball more.
Exactly. Whenever he had the ball, he was alright, but he had barely any influence in this match and was, pretty much, invisible. It didn't help that our midfield lost control of the match in the 2nd half once Cleverley left, but still, Nani could have been more influential given he was one of the front 3 with Chicharito and Will Keane.

I'm really surprised he didn't get on the ball enough, as well. He's the sort of a player who always wants the ball and to get involved. However, this was a completely different Nani in terms of his approach to the match. This was unusual from him. Still, he probably went down van Gaal's list with this performance. It's pretty apparent that he's not influential enough when positioned in the middle.

I really wish people were just fecking consistent when rating players. Nani is the only winger at United who gets slagged with regards to being "inconsistent".

Him being quiet is the problem, he was the senior player in that attack, he should have come looking for the ball rather than waiting for it, it is exactly what Cleverley is getting unfairly pilloried for in his thread right now when Nani was an empty shirt today

Well no, Cleverley is getting pulled up on losing the ball in dangerous areas when he's playing the deepest midfielder role and for what he actually did do on the pitch being completely under par.

Nani didnt really give the ball away today, he just didnt get involved enough. Its not that his performance wasn't good enough, its that there wasnt enough involvement during his time on the pitch. And yes absolutely as a senior player he should definitely be doing more so thats dissappointing from him.

But its not like Cleverley. Its like Hernandez.

It will be interesting if LVG can make Nani his "Robben" and convert him into a ST. He's got the qualities but I feel he's a very good crosser and that might potentially be wasted at ST or behind the man.

Looked very uninvolved in both games so far... not sure the 2nd striker role is for him but its early still.

It's beyond embarrassing he is still here after 6 years of pointlessness. We are supposed to be the biggest club in the world.

7 seasons, 2 of which he was one of the best wingers around, 2 where he was developping from a youngster into a very good winger and then 2 where he was constantly injured... But yes, 6 years of pointlessness, sure. Completely ignore how he was our best player pretty much between 2010-2012.

People have funny memories, don't they?

Nani at his best was one of the best wingers in the world. Few people would have Robben over him for a season or two, and that speaks volumes. However, it looks like he may have lost a little pace, and he doesn't look as adventurous on the ball anymore. What I used to love about Nani was his ability to run at his defender at great pace with close control, basically like Robben. He hasn't done that for a while. He was one of the fastest players in the league, and now he looks not much more than average.

Nani man what happened! Brought on at half time, subbed 25mins later. Pass astray, shots straight at GK, don't think LvG will want him anymore. Reports have been suggested he's on the way out, I don't think he's done anything to suggest otherwise today.

Last season which were his best performances ? Just curious thats all

Harsh sub.
Perhaps it's LvG thinking, quick go grab a goal. Nani is decent on pens as well.

van Gaal clearly got a message from Juve telling him not to play Nani any longer so as to keep him fit for the swap with Vidal, all cool people.
