Suddenly, signing Shaw for what we did and selling Evra and Buttner for pennies doesn't seem all that shrewd of Woody
Good post, we should have made Southampton take less for Shaw, and play hard ball with Juve over half a million, or perhaps demand a bigger fee the all conquering Búttner? I doubt however we would have let Búttner go if we knew Evra wanted out though.

I reckon he would have stayed had we not managed to sign Shaw. As sad as it is, I think it is the right time though

Losing a lot of experience and personality in the dressing room in Rio, Pat, Vida etc this year, will be interesting to see how it all goes.

Will there even be any real cover for Shaw?

Pat gone, Fabio gone, Buttner gone, Fryers gone. Suppose Evans can play there if needed, perhaps we will sign another left back.
LvG will fill our personality quota all by himself.

Wow, there's nobody left in the squad who is a real, vocal leader. Rooney maybe, but after everything he has done, do ALL the players really respect him?

Everyone else, like Moyes, hasn't won enough or isn't vocal enough to take up the mantle and inspire players of Rooney/RVP's quality.

Does anyone else think that if Evra had stayed, he'd have had plenty of games this season? With our change to 3 at the back and pushing the fullbacks into wingbacks or wide midfielders, Evra would be playing in the same role he'll now play at Juventus.

This is a role that slightly relieves defensive responsibility due to the 3 at the back and 1 holding midfielder being able to cover his position when he goes forward and Evra is coming off the back of his best ever season going forward.

With that improved final ball and being more of a goalthreat than previously, he would have not only suited the system but most likely given us a more offensive option than Shaw for games where we want to exploit the opponent's right hand side.

He'd definitely have gotten game time, but he wanted more than a year contract.

Patrice Evra claims he would have been made Manchester United captain had he not left for Juventus this summer.

The 33-year-old left-back ended an illustrious career at Manchester United early this summer when he switched to the Bianconeri on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £1.5millon.

The Frenchman made a total of 379 appearances for United, scoring 10 goals, after signing in 2006, but he was given permission to leave following the acquiestion of England international Luke Shaw from Southampton.

However, new United boss Louis van Gaal would have liked to have kept the experienced international at the club – even offering him the captain's armband, according to Evra.

He said: "Manchester United wanted to keep me and they also wanted to give me the captain's band.

"Van Gaal was disappointed to see me go away, but I had already made a choice."

Speculation has linked United's Nani with Juventus and Evra believes the Portuguese international would boost the Serie A side.

He said: "He is a great player and it was a privilege for me to play with Nani. If Juve are interested in him, I can only say that Nani would be a great purchase."

Evra will definitely be playing with one former United team-mate, Carlos Tevez, who the Frenchman admitted he was especially keen to reunite with.

"Carlos is a warrior," Evra added. "It was tough for me to see him leave United for another team. We're great friends on and off the pitch.

"It wasn't easy to leave Manchester United, it was a decision I made for personal reasons.

"I'm happy with the choice I've made in coming here. Juventus is a great club with a wonderful history."

"The minute they came calling, I knew it was the right choice for me."

Speaking at his official unveiling, Evra also revealed his desire to help Juventus win a fourth consecutive league title - a feat United never quite achieved during his time at Old Trafford.

The 33-year-old left-back did lift the Premier League five times during his eight years in Manchester but the Red Devils' run towards claiming four in a row was interrupted by Chelsea in 2010.

Evra may not have been part of the Juve side that clinched three Serie A titles between 2012 and 2014, yet after making the "tough" decision to swap England for Italy, he intends to play a key role in another successful defence.

He said: "It won't be easy to win four titles in a row. I managed to do it three times with Manchester United and know how difficult the challenge is.

"We also hope to do well in the Champions League. It's a great competition and we'll look to go as far as we can."

Evra, who will wear the number 33 shirt in Turin, has signed a two-year contract at the Juventus Stadium.

So sad to see him go. True United legend, who says otherwise is just silly.
Come to think of it, I've never been at OT, planning to go this autumn hopefully but it will be a different United. I'll never see Giggs, Scholes, Rio, Vidić, Evra in action, not to mention Fergie on the touchline. LVG is great and all but.. :(

So Evra is saying he made the choice to leave before he realised he'd play often in a role that suits him and would be given the captains armband and wouldnt rethink it. Thats a shame but makes sense if he didn't know at the time.

Out of those 3, surely we should have done all things possible to keep Vidic.

Would have been nice to keep him imo, at least until Shaw gets used to what's expected of him in an attacking sense. While he might not have the energy he once had, the freedom to attack and the added security of another centre back would have suited Patrice.

Interesting that Van Gaal wanted to make him captain. You don't make someone who is second choice in his position captain. Makes you wonder how much input Van Gaal into the Shaw signing, considering it's so widely reported that he was swayed by promises of being our first choice LB.

I reckon Evra would be superb at wingback too. The extra CB to cover for him would make him an even more potent attacking thread. Such a shame he upped and left. Feeling slightly annoyed he couldn't be convinced to stay but ho hum.

I'm a bit annoyed we didn't keep him really. Still think he has a lot to offer, he was just a bit shit in recent years because we completely overplayed him. You'd think this would've been an ideal situation, bring a young replacement in and keep Evra around for another year or two to interchange with him.

But from Evras point of view, it could be his final season or two so maybe he just wants to keep playing all the games and possibly in the UCL. I don't think someone in his position really wants to go through a transitional period...

He was possibly annoyed that we're paying Shaw more than he ever got when he's actually done something for the club.

What's done is done though.

It seems strange seeing him a Juventus shirt. I hope he excels in the Italian game and racks up some silverware with Juventus. I don't think it will really set in until the season starts just how many legends have left the club all in One window. I can understand him not wanting to play second fiddle to a teenager, albeit a very talented one.

I understand why people are very sad at some of our legends all leaving at once but with LVG coming in and SAF leaving (let's ignore Moyes' reign), this is a good time to start a new era and create new legends.

That's just guesses though, isn't it? We don't know what wages Shaw is on, I doubt it's more than Evra got.

Totally agree in that respect. It's the end of an era, and time to start a fresh. I'm going to miss Evra's interviews and love for the club. You couldn't wish for a better player in that regard.

Wow, what a strange image. Just as weird as seeing Vidic in another kit, gonna take some getting used to.
