And Real Madrid don't want to sell Di Maria otherwise they wouldn't have offered him a new contract. They're just doing what we did with Ronaldo now.
They clearly wanna sell to buy Falcao plus Ronaldo was younger and fair bit better already than Di Maria has ever been.

He's not even a starter for them right now.

Let's be real, even £75m for him will probably be better than the £42m Arsenal paid for about 4 months worth of Ozil.
Not at all. They still have Ozil and he's still younger, tbf.

I too believe the wing-back role will be Di Maria's starting position, and having Rojo gives the option to move to a back four as and when is needed during a match to give Di Maria more freedom.
Yeah I added white text, but I can see Di Maria being actually being a very good Wingback in the sort of system we have been using. He has the lungs and work rate to basically be a much improved, two footed version of Valencia.

As you said, with Jones/Smalling/Rojo all quite versatile it also gives us the flexibility to instantly switch to a back four with the same personel, if desired.

In the current system, he'd probably be considered as an attacker - so it's an area with the like of RVP, Rooney, Kags, Mata, Januzzaj, etc. He'd have to displace one of Mata, Rooney and RVP. Either that, or he'd be in midfield as an upgrade on an already very good player in Herrera, or played at wingback. While his versatility is great, it's not often that you spend £60m on a player and not know where you ought to put him. I guess the big difference in our favour is that we actually know that Di Maria is versatile, whereas Ozil looked out of sorts in a lot of the games he had to be played away from #10.

It's weird how people think that the reason we aren't playing 433 is because we lack wingers. The reason we're playing 343, is so we can get our best 3 players on the pitch. It'd be silly if we went to all that trouble building a system that serves to get the best out of Mata, Rooney and RVP and then end up having to drop one of them. It'd be senseless to have spent an entire pre-season working on a system to then throw it away.

Just an aside on the six NO,10s point; signing Di Maria doesn't give us less number 10s - it arguably gives us one more. He definitely improves our quality, but you can't really think that this signing makes us a more balanced side?
I didn't mean that Di Maria gives us less no.10s, you have to sell one to lower the number... But my main point is that he is naturally a winger and our wingers are severely lacking in any quality. I think Di Maria will initially take over Ashley Young's position, so probably a wing back, however in a 4-3-3 I don't see why LVG couldn't incorporate a wide diamond type formation, therefore keeping the front 3 of Robin of Persia, Rooney and Johnny Kills and then having support from a central-wide playing AdM, a central Hererra and, currently, Valencia on the right. Then a more trad. back four of Shaw, Jones, Evans and Rafael (hopefully sign a quality CB too, obviously).

That might never materialise, and is just me thinking out loud, but AdM's proposed signing would help our team rather than create more problems, in my opinion. I don't think he is the full answer, but if we sign a CM and a CB before next week, then I believe those coupled with AdM would be a significant improvement to our squad. If we don't sign anyone else, then he's a player I'm glad we would have but you're right in the sense that he won't provide any more balance.

Sky sports reporting the same. Although I want us to pay whatever it takes, I don't think our board will sanction £75m on a single player. :(
We're going backwards again? Skysports sort yourself out, it was pretty much done last night according to them?

I hope they didn't just go all out yesterday only based on what Ballague said and now they're just covering their tracks. Would be heartbreaking. :(

Now Accepting Positive Reps.
Barcelona are saying they paid £65m for Suarez, a player who you could make a solid argument for being the best player in the world. (Certainly the best striker)

If we pay much above £50m I will be disappointed.

If a fee hasn't even been agreed with Madrid who are playing hardball and can actually afford not to let him go, why is this considered "close"?

Still can't believe Real Madrid are playing hard ball with us. :( I have gone from feeling like this all but done yesterday evening to thinking it won't happen after that 75m announcement by Sky sports. :(
they can afford to knowing that woody is under pressure to make a big signing. You can thank the Muppets over here for their contribution....

Financial Fair play is one of the best things to happen to us in years. I don't think we'd have a chance of signing Di Maria otherwise.

Agree with what yore saying but Suarez had baggage which reduced his price. Di Maria has just come of a great world cup and arguably the best season of his career.

And Liverpool claimed they received £75m. Real Madrid are doing exactly the same thing here.

It's no coincidence.

I think keeping Di Maria will be counter productive at this point for Real.

He is turning 27 will be unhappy on the bench, they won't probably get the upgrade they need as a striker and it will be sword hanging over everyone's head over the season in the media. Already we have seen in the 2 Super Copa games.

His price is at a level from where it will only drop now and he's been inconsistent before last season. They wanna sell and there's no other prospective buyer at those levels. Hope we hold firm.

75m pound or euro?
There seems to be some confusion.
If it's 75M pound,I doubt we wound have went for him, agent would have informed us well in advance what the price Real are looking into.

Not the same situation.
How is it not?

The player apparently wants to leave for whatever reason, as did Ronaldo but he stated he wanted to play for Real Madrid.

Di Maria was offered a new contract but turned it down, although Madrid want to keep him, as United did with Ronaldo. We didn't want him to leave either.

So now Madrid have a player on their hands who is unhappy, wants to leave but they don't especially want to sell, especially for a low amount considering how highly Ancelotti thinks of him and how impressive he has been for Madrid for the last few seasons.

Almost identical to the Ronaldo situation we found ourselves in when he wanted to leave.

If we fail against Sunderland later they could prob throw another £10m on top and our "fans" would push the club to pay it.

I'd love him here and at the end don't care too much about the price but we can't keep overpaying so ridiculously. We've basically payed twice the value for four of our last five signings, counting ADM.
What's it to you though? I'm personally delighted that the club is actually behaving like an elite club and flexing it's muscles. We clearly have the money to do it, or else we'd be doing the same thing we done for most of SAF's later years. Penny pinching.

People talking about the price, it's a sign of intent. We'd be signing a great player, but at a time when we're rebuilding it might encourage others. Is he worth it? He's coming up to his prime and could end his career at the club. If he helps us back into Europe or challenging for titles then success pays for itself. If anything we're paying such a fee because for so long we were tight. When we sold Ronaldo, we got a good season or two out of Valencia but he's not top quality.

So the value doesn't matter, naturally we'll negotiate but should it concern anyone? I don't think so. The shoe for once is on the other foot and hopefully he thrives here. If he does, suddenly we get a bit of buzz back. Suddenly teams are more wary. Suddenly our players feel 10 feet tall. So is it worth it? Probably :)

Look at Bales price. He scored in the champions league final and is young. Are Madrid mugs in this instance? Probably not. No one cares anymore about his price tag because he's shown he can be part of a team that can win any competition going. We need such a transfer

he is a panic buy. He is available for weeks, so why buy him that late, if you were after him all along? If thats not a reaction to the lost match, LvG and Ed are dumb as feck. This transfer wouldnt have happened if the team would have won the first match convincingly.
Nonsense.

Ronaldo initiated the move to Real, we convinced him to stay for one more year. Di Maria had no intention of leaving only to be forced out for not accepting Reals terms on a new deal. Different scenario.

I would wait for an update from Spain before jumping the gun with the SkySports report about the fee, which contradicts the Spanish outlets.

If that's the price then I'd expect the club to move on to an alternate purchase, Douglas is the plan B isn't he?

Well when Utd sold Ronaldo.....all they had waiting to step up to near that level was Rooney.

Real can sell Di Maria given they've got Ronaldo, Bale, JRod, Benzema, Kroos and Modric.

Plus they haven't shown half the resistence to keep this summer or last that Utd did with Ronaldo for about 4 summers.

Angel Di Maria: Ramon Calderon uneasy star winger wants to leave

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon is uneasy that star winger Angel Di Maria wants to leave the club.

Manchester United have refused to comment on reports they are set to sign the Argentina international in a British record £60m deal.

It is a shift in stance by United after they had previously indicated they were not interested in the player.

Calderon told BBC Radio 5 live: "When you have a player like Di Maria in your team, you have to try and keep him."

Di Maria recently told the La Liga club he wants to leave after rejecting a new deal.

"It seems he was not happy at Real Madrid and will be leaving in the next three or four days. Personally, I don't like it," added Calderon.

"Normally the club who owns the very good players don't like to sell them."

A switch to Louis van Gaal's side would see the player follow in the footsteps of international team-mate Marcos Rojo, who signed for United on Wednesday.

During the summer United officials distanced themselves from a move for Di Maria, who missed the World Cup final through injury.

Madrid paid £20m to bring him to the Bernabeu from Benfica in 2010.

United, who play Sunderland on Sunday, lost their opening Premier League game 2-1 at home to Swansea last weekend.

We're splitting hairs here.

Either way, Madrid want to keep him or they want a silly offer for him which forces them to sell and helps them out when it comes to FFP.

They want to keep him but can't afford the wage he wants due to Spanish tax I believe.

Just remember Rojo supposed to go for 30m€ or Shaw for 40m£ or Herrera for 37m£. Every time we are in for a player his price skyrocket in the last meters.
