Last 5 years stats:

Welbeck 142 games 29 goals
Falcao 200 games 155 goals
Rooney 205 games 120 goals
RvP 176 games 117 goals

We can compare them in respective age if you want but up until 24 years of age I'm pretty sure all of Falcao, RvP and Rooney has hit Welbeck 5 years goals in just one season?
You'd have to and I don't have those stats to hand. I just think Danny's stats from last season look like a young player turning the corner, compared to his poor return in previous seasons. Would suck balls if he continues that trend in an Arsenal shirt.

well then this the 15th time it doesnt make any sense. because we hold all the cards. the player has a contract with us. so we should tell him where hes going. arsenals offer should have been rejected outright.
And then people would whine about how shabbily we treat our Academy graduates. And how unbecoming of Manchester United it is. We did what was best for him. We owed him that.

Can anyone make a case as to why we didn't send him to Arsenal on loan? I'm sure Arsenal would have taken it.

1. Probably their bid was the highest.

2. Because we don't need him.

3. Welbeck is 2 months shy of 24. Falcao at 23 has scored over 30 goals in his final season at Porto. Welbeck is simply not good enough to lead the line, and in the season when he scored 2 goals in 40 games says something about his finishing abilities.

4. Wilson is nothing like Welbeck, the lad is a better finisher already.

Fergie bought a lot of players and broke a lot of transfer records over they years. We brought in 6 players. Something that Fergie replicated in the middle 90's and middle 00's.

LvG already gave Blackett a chance we also have Januzaj coming through the ranks, let's not forget Rafael as well who was bought as a teenager.

I don't know how long it will take for some people to realize that Welbeck is just not good enough.
1. They are pur direct rivals. you dont strenghten your direct rivals. we are not arsenal
2. we dont need him at the moment. doesnt mean we'll not need him in the future. thats why loan deals are made.
3. Wasnt Falcao at River plate when he was 23?
4. Webeck has been our most dangerous player when we played two giants of european football in CL when we clearly the weaker team. Welbeck stood out. I dont see how people think hes not a good player. why would spurs and arsenal want him so bad if he was terrible?

Well, to be fair, I don't think an Alex Ferguson managed United would have even entertained the possibility of selling to a direct rival.

there was a reason fergie was who he was. he made good decisions for young players but he also never undermined the club. im sure its possible to do both at the same time. you make it sound like such an impossible task.

Well people need to get over the fact this isn't an Alex Ferguson managed United anymore.

And you make it sound like you'd only be happy with one outcome. The one that's unequivocably perfect for us. Life doesn't work like that, we can't always get our own way. Danny wanted to go and to go to Arsenal, so he did. Blaming the club for it seems churlish.

Come in here to give this lad a proper burial like he deserves.
Wasn't until about 18/24 months ago that I really started to appreciate him, and seeing him go has woken me up feeling all down. He offers a different threat to the others, and I'd have sooner seen us sell Rooney to Arsenal last summer than Welbeck going there. In fact, before Falcao, I felt that if we were to play two strikers, he had to be one of them.

Came up through the ranks and put in some big performances for us too. Will be missed, and I predict great things for him at Arsenal.

It's goals/90 minutes played. If you know the total number of goals scored, you can do the math.
He scored, I think 9 PL goals, 1 UCL goal and 3 international goals.

So he played around 1,266 mins (or 14 matches), scoring a goal every 141 mins.

Not bad considering the number of chances we created last season, versus say, someone playing for City/Pool.

I think he's going to do well at Arsenal, in their system. I was all for loaning him but it seems Welbeck pushed for a permanent move.

He deserves it though. He's at a age where he really needs more football to push on.

welbeck wanting to leave is not perfect. selling him is not perfect. i wonder how fergie managed not to sell to his direct rivals for 26 years if it was so damn hard.

Welbeck wanted a permanent move. Which he's totally entitled to.
Fair enough. I guess LVG really doesn't see all that much in him, otherwise we'd be convincing him that if he has a good loan spell, he would be be guaranteed games when he returns or if not, we'd sell him for 16m next year. I guess we'll just have to cope with Falcao leading the line instead :(

How many goals do you think he'll get for Arsenal this season? I think he'll better 1 every 2 games for sure. I don't think he'll convince the Arsenal fans of his worth this year though.

Welbeck has often been played out wide rather than centrally, so it doesnt really surprise me that his finishing hasnt been top notch when he hasnt regularly been in those sorts of goalscoring positions.

Welbeck will im sure have seen the development of the likes of Sturridge and Sterling, which came from them having a manager who had faith in them and played them regularly. Going from a few years ago where Welbeck was regarded as a superior prospect to Sturridge, his development has stagnated in comparison. Welbecks all round game is fantastic - he presses high up the pitch, gives 110%, he has ridiculous pace and can dribble and take players on. The only thing that was missing from his game was finishing, which I expect will come if he has regular gametime.

I fully expect him to do fantastically at Arsenal and United to regret letting him go. I would rather have him at the club for the rest of his career, than have a mercenary in Falcao coming for a year, who doesnt even offer anything much different to our existing strikers. Welbeck did offer something different - a United attitude, and an abundance of pace, two things that the squad is currently lacking.

His stats look even better if you discount the games he started as a wide forward and only looked at the games where he started as a striker. The trick with Danny is playing him in his best position (which he will at Arsenal)and you'll see him bang in the goals.

The very last thing he was going to do was sell Rooney to Chelsea! But besides, this isn't Ferguson's United anymore and people need to get over that. We bought a better player and LVG felt it right to honour Danny's wishes. I personally don't see much wrong with that. But then people are always desperate to moan.

I see him getting about 15 this season, and kicking on from there.

He'll win them over fairly soon I think, he's got too many likeable qualities to not do so.

I think Welbeck is overrated a lot by United fans. So far I have not seeing anything close that would suggest he'll fullfil all those expectations. He's not Arsenal level as well at the moment with Sanchez over there and their tendency to play with 1 forward. I don't think he'll get that much of a game time either as he probably expects.

In theory Giroud will probably keep him out, when fit but Danny's got three months ahead of him in his preferred position and I can see him stepping up in the same way he stepped up for United last season when he got a (brief) run in the centre. What was it? 6 goals in 6 games? Playing for United under Moyes.

Stick him in the same position with Cazorla, Sanchez and Ramsey buzzing around and he could be quite a force. That's only this season too. He's 23 years old. That's still just a baby for a lead the line striker. Will only get better from here.
I'm not saying he won't excel at Arsenal, but it's hard to see how he will solve their striker issue. Like you said, if Giroud is an upgrade to him than they hardly are pushing for the title race. Time will tell obviously and I'd like him to prove me wrong.

He's an massive upgrade on Sanogoals.
I'm a massive upgrade on Sanogo.

I think this is the reason he was allowed to go to Arsenal.

LVG isnt targetting "top 4" in the short to medium term. Let Welbeck make the difference between Liverpool and Arsenal finishing fourth, we have bigger fish to fry and the likes of Falcao and Di Maria are the caliber to do that. Not Danny bloody Welbeck (who will be a good signing for Arsenal in their perpetual persuit of fourth).
Huh? Bigger fish, such as?

He'll get more game time than any other forward they have. Even when Giroud gets back, I reckon he'll (Giroud) either be a sub or they will have to work a system accomodate both in the same side.

Phelan is not happy

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co...news/phelan-man-uniteds-identity-been-7706401

Mike Phelan believes Manchester United's identity has been 'broken' by the sale of Danny Welbeck to Arsenal.

Welbeck's departure was confirmed late on the deadline day, just minutes before United's loan capture of Radamel Falcao was announced.

And Phelan, a former assistant of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, believes swapping a Manchester-born academy graduate for an expensive foreign import is evidence that the club is now heading in a new direction.

Speaking to the BBC, Phelan said: "Danny Welbeck has been part of United's identity and that has been broken.

"What will happen in the future now, nobody knows but that thread has been broken now.

"There is always the start of something and maybe this is the start of a new way of doing things at Manchester United and maybe that is the way football is going.

"Is it better to look at the instant rather than the future? It is a difficult one because youth is always the future, we all have to start somewhere and you just hope that product of youth can develop in the Premier League."

1. We sold them Silvestre not so long ago.
2. Welbeck is 24 it's make or break for him, he had 3-4 seasons at top level now, what is the use to loan him now when he'll supposedly be in his prime? What if the loan doesn't work out and he doesn't gain game time. It won't be Arsenal's player they don't have to play him.
3. Falcao was 23 in his first season at Porto. He became 24 in the end of the season. That season he hit 34 goals. More than Welbeck in his career so far.
4. Welbeck stood out in that game with his work rate and other abilities which are not finishing. He scored 4 goals in 19 games in Europe so his goal ratio is not great there either.

He's not terrible but he's not the second coming of Henry either.

Again, lets not forget Welbeck asked to leave twice, and pushed for the Arsenal move to be permanent and not a loan.

So any discussions about how good he is, or could have been, or is going to be, are completely redundant when he didn't want to be a United player anymore.

Tbh, my sadness at Danny leaving is being almost completely overridden by my annoyance at people absolutely losing their minds over this transfer.

It changes very little. We still have loads of academy players, several of whom none of us had even heard of before LVG brought them through this year. Nothing we've done in this window is without precident for us, and Danny was the one who wanted to leave, something he communicated BEFORE the Falcao loan anyway.

Yet still a whole load of people are tryiing to tie their emotional reaction to Welbeck leaving to a bigger, more poignant and significant watershed that isn't really there. Like a bunch of middle aged men complaining about the lack of good music, when what they really mean is "my preferred era is over"

We're all gutted he's gone, but there's no need to make it into some apocalyptic warning sign.

Gutted to see Welbeck leave. Not only do I highly rate him but he was part of the club from such a young age and he's from Longsight. It's always nice to have local lads in the first team. I hope he goes on to be Arsenals best striker. I don't care if they are rivals I wish all the best for Welbeck.

Exactly this. It's a real shame to see him go, but in a season where squad depth isn't huge requirement and making the top 4 is a must, replacing him with a player like Falcao is fecking brilliant.

In an ideal world he would have stuck around and played his part, but he wanted out, so we should accept it and stop lumbering blame on Ed and LVG when they just delivered 6 new signings that all improve our team.

If we are going to get upset, it should because we didn't get a Vidal or a Hummels, not because we lost Danny fecking Welbeck.

Amen to that.

Essentially we sold Welbeck and brought in Falcao, which is a huge, huge upgrade.

So Danny's first game will be against City. Hat trick it is then, mate. :D

Seriously, though, although he's gone to Arsenal, I truly hope he has a great career there and proves his critics wrong. Arsenal are buying a very good player, in my opinion, who, if he does start to get a run of games up top and score more goals, he could be a very dangerous player, as he's very all rounded.

He will do well there, but i just dont want people to say we should have kept him based on his improvement at Arsenal. He will shine being their main man, which he wouldnt be here. We got the maximum out of him, not potential wise, but how we used him and he wouldnt improve here anymore as a squad player. He will improve massively as a striker and thrive under the confidence and guidance of Wenger, you just know it. He was just a versatile, useful squad player for us, at Arsenal he will be the hero. He missed some chances and looked a bit headless at times, but no wonder when you know that the next game you could sit on the bench. At Arsenal, he knows he is a starter, even if he doesnt score all the time. That will be the key for his development there and people forget the psychological side of a move for him.

His confidence will be sky high and he will surprise a lot of people on here how good he can be. I am not sad, he would never be the player we all wanted him to be here, wasted potential. Good and intelligent move for him at a perfect time you have to say.

Actually, I was going to start a thread on this (in a different forum, obviously!). For various complicated reasons to do with the state of the music industry and the way people interact with music these days I do think music is on a steep downward trend. Will there ever be another Bowie, Beatles or Dylan? I was talking to a friend about this the other day and couldn't come up with a single act that came to prominence in the last decade who could be mentioned in the same breath as musical greats of the past. Better stuff out there if you push things out a couple of decades but you there's a definite downwards trend. Music's got so fragmented and under so much pressure to appeal to ever-diminishing attention spans you're never going to get anything to compete with the great albums of the past. Lots of "good" stuff but nothing "great". Not any more.

So yeah, Danny Welbeck. Bit of a shame really.

We may well come to regret it, and I genuinely think he'll be great at Arsenel, but the reret will largely be from an emotional POV. We didn't force him out. We aren't removing the heart of our team. This happened just because it happened. Because it sadly made sense from a lot of perspectives, not least Danny's. Even if he does become an all time great at Arsenal, it'll be because they'll be able to give him an uninterrupted run in his preferred position for years to come. Which is something we couldn't provide, even if we hadn't signed Falcao.

Presumably though your friend is of the same vintage as you? Talk to people in their 20s now and I'm sure they'll tell you all sorts of great music that either you weren't aware of, or just simply isn't the kind of thing that appeals to you, but does them, in the same way Bowie was an abonination to a generation rasied on Big Band and skiffle. I'll definitely agree that the fragmented nature of the intustry makes it much harder for a true great to emerge into such stardom, but that doesn't remotely mean there aren't any great song writers, performers or innovators out there. Not in the slightest.

Winning titles.
let's not run before we can walk.

With the expenditure or looking at us on paper, titles are expected to be won, but the reality is we've not looked like a top 4 side, even, for quite some time and this season it's vital that we get back into those CL places first and foremost.

Spot on. Lad wanted to leave before Falcao came into the picture. Effectively, we've replaced Welbeck with Wilson, not Falcao.

That's why I said short to medium term.

Welbeck would be shipped out of Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern etc and we should be no different.
