This nuance about "intelligence" which has cropped up so often over the last few years regarding him does my head in. There seems to be a view that the Roy of the Rovers style he had which made him an outstanding footballer is a bad thing. Take away that and he becomes half the player. He didn't have to be that guy sitting deep directing play because he had the qualities to be in amongst play.

Like any United fan I'm a huge admirer of Scholes. Midfielders like Xavi and Pirlo. But there are more ways to run a midfield than to be this artistic sitting midfielder spraying balls left and right.

Keane was more towards Gerrard than he was to Scholes in play and many will say he's the best midfielder to grace the Premier League. I certainly believe so.

No, it won't be. Not even close.
I actually think it will be what he is most remembered for by non-Liverpool fans. It's hard to express quite how hilarious and perfectly timed it was.

You're not wrong. However the point I was making, however, is that his style doesn't enhance his longevity. It's no coincidence he and your example Keane didn't have the longevity of the midfielders you mentioned.

I don't think it will define his legacy but that slip, in this meme/vine/gif age where it's all about 'what have you done for me lately?' that was a singular moment which will forever be linked with him. Liverpool fans will remember him for much more than that, I'm sure, which they should.

Respect for a great player. At least he knows he's on a steep slope of decline and is willing to take a step down instead of milking his team for more money. Better if Rodgers had helped him extend his usefulness instead of exposing him like he has this season. I think he would've played a few more PL seasons if Rodgers had developed the team a bit better instead of trying to build it around him. Given a properly defined secondary role, he could've been a one club player, even if he isn't what he was at his peak.

In comparison to other great PL CM's, he definitely lacks when it comes to nous, but he probably ranks up there when it came to being able to drag a team up by sheer force of will and energy. I guess that happens when you don't have as good a supporting cast as the top teams, needing to be the all action-all everything leader. When he did have a good supporting player or two (i.e. in-form Torres, Alonso, Suarez, etc), he was able to tease his fans and almost mount the summit, but it tended to be 1 season peaks, falling back down to earth the subsequent seasons. If I were him, i'd be rather upset with the team owners/managers for not properly pushing on after those seasons and mounting another title challenge. Sort of like Ted Williams, a great player but never having a good enough supporting cast.

I won't miss him to be honest. But I agree with the rest

Hell of a player. As important to liverpool as Keane was to utd
I agree that he could do those things but so could Beckham. That's the level I would put him at.

He certainly wasn't in the top 3 midfielders in the PL never mind Europe/the world

Debatable. The first thing that springs to my mind is Istanbul.
That was the GEOAT.

You get the award for the most bizarre and unnecessary statistic of all time.
It is bizarre indeed. Being an European champion but not your own country's for a decade before AND after. You are 'the best' but you really are not. True definition of lucky.

This probably fits better here... any thoughts?

I see Stevie slippin' on the pitch tonight, Demba
And he's been waiting for this moment for all his life, Demba
Can you see him slippin' on the pitch tonight, Demba, Demba

Well if he told you he was slipping, you would not lend a hand
I've seen his face before my friend, but I don't know if he knows how to win
Well I was there and I saw what he did, I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can't wipe off that grin, they said he would win
It's all been a pack of lies

And I see Stevie slippin' on the pitch tonight, Demba
And he's been waiting for this moment for all his life, Demba
I see Stevie slippin' on the pitch tonight, Demba
And he's been waiting for this moment for all his life, Demba, Demba

Well I remember, I remember, don't worry, how could I ever forget
It was the last time, the last time he had a chance
But I know the reason why he keeps slippin' up, oh no he don't fool me
Well the hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to Stevie G

I see Stevie slippin' on the pitch tonight, Demba
He's been waiting for this moment for all his life, Demba
I see Stevie slippin' on the pitch tonight, Demba, Demba
He's been waiting for this moment for all his life, Demba
I see Stevie slippin' on the pitch tonight, Demba
He's been waiting for this moment for all his life, Demba
I see Stevie slippin' on the pitch tonight, Demba, Demba, Demba
Well he's been waiting for this moment for all his life, Demba, Demba

I see Stevie slippin' on the pitch tonight, Demba, Demba, Demba, Demba
Well he's been waiting for this moment for all his life, Demba, Demba, Demba Ba

He realises he'll not be an automatic choice at Liverpool any more. It's hurting his pride.

Basically doing a runner.

That's what I don't see anyone saying. He could still be useful to Rodgers and the team if he stuck around as a part-time player. He may not have the legs for 90mins anymore but he's still capable of doing some things at a high level. The occasional start with 15-20mins part time and I'm sure he could teach newer/younger players a few things. For him to leave at this point feels strange - either the ego's getting in the way or that slip really did break him mentally.

Just heard some news from my brother.

Apparently Gerrard will be releasing an autobiography, one with no title obviously.

Yeah that's what it looks like but you can understand his mindset. He thinks (wrongly) that he should still be an automatic first choice and isn't prepared to play a bit part role for a mid-table team. If he was with a good team that were consistently challenging for honours he wouldn't mind playing less games

Yeah I think that's the main difference between his situation and that of Giggs and Scholes. He's in a struggling team far off the title (and lately the top 4) while Giggs and Scholes were in successful teams that were winning trophies. Plus we could probably afford to have older players in the team while it seems to be a big issue for Liverpool.

Chris Bascombe, Telegraph:

Steven Gerrard will be paraded as Major League Soccer’s next major English import as early as July – and Liverpool are already considering re-signing him on loan next January.

Most of his goals. If you can put aside the natural dislike for him, there's some absolutely cracking strikes in there (only one proper belter against us).

Judging by Keanes exploits in the States, Gerrard will tear up that league.
Whoever is signed to replace him won't hit the ground running, and I guarentee when the MlS seasons over they will call for his loan return so his replacement can learn from his experience and know how.
Thompson 'The lift his return would give to the dressing room would be worth it, even if he just comes on for 20 minutes here and there'
Bookmark that soon to be quote.
This from RAWK:

Just having him around would be a massive boost in the dressing room, Melwood etc.

Who knows. He is right though. We have our legends, but then there are three or four who are a cut above even them like Gerrard, Dalglish and Shankly. Men who epitomise Liverpool more than any others.
Then why did he want to leave the club back in 2006? Even if Rooney goes on to beat Sir Bobby's goalscoring and appearance records I'll never considering him to be a legend because he tried to leave the club twice. When Gerrard tried to leave there were Liverpool fans burning jerseys with his name on the back. I consider the likes of SAF, Keane, Giggs, Charlton and Best to be United legends (yes I know Best and Keane didn't finish their careers at the club), but nothing more. No one person if bigger than the club. To suggest that Gerrard is more than a legend, whatever that is (maybe some sort of demi-god?), is way OTT especially considering he once handed in a transfer request which I would not consider to be the actions of a legend, and certainly not someone considered to be "more" than a legend.

Why not ?
I'm assuming the 3 are Viera,Keane,Scholes ?
With respect to Gerrard, the above 3 were playing in very good teams that had an array of talent.

This keeps getting trotted out by the BBC, TalkShite etc, it's an impossible argument to have.

Nice video, I'd add this one too, probably the best game he played in:

It's hilarious reading all the tributes flooding in from players and fans labelling him as this great one club man. Don't they understand this news results in him playing for another club?

Because Alonso Mascherano and Torres on form were all shite (the 3 were world class at the time) Add Gerrard Reina Johnson Agger Skrtel Aurellio Aquallini Babel Leiva Reira Benayoun Rodriguez and Kuyt. Liverpool had a very good team and they should have won the title but for Fergies brilliance helped by a Rafa meltdown.
