Problem is that this one has been the 'easier' game in the run up, we're up against Sunderland at home, City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham up next, right? I've already been pointing out that things can get pretty ugly soon and that was with expectation that we get atleast 1 point at Swans.

How are they better considering we've beaten both of them and until tonight above them
Like i said they both under performed and we were able to get ahead of them, arsenal have overtaken us and liverpool have cut a ten point gap to five with a game in hand. We just aren't very good and haven't been all season, you can dismiss it as doom and gloom but it's the truth. Lot of fans are deluded with their expectations, there were people who thought we were in the title race, then it was talk of catching city, now it's top four but we aren't good enough for any of that based on how we have played all season.

It's not impossible to finish in the top four but only if we see more from the manager, the players and the team in general so far there are no signs of any of that.

When we got ahead it was them underperforming, yet right now it's not just we've hit a bad patch of form.

I think the rules have changed. Now the limit for CL places for one league is 5 so unless one wins the CL and another wins the EL and both finish outside it, I think we'd be ok.

Edit: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015–16_UEFA_Champions_League#Format_changes

(Thanks to the posters who showed me that in the first place)
Basically what I said, the only way the 4th place PL team loses out on a CL place is if some English team wins the EL and another wins the CL whilst finishing outside the top 4. Possible with ARsenal, but hugely unlikely.

We need to start getting wins away from home. If we don't do that top 4 is gone.

I remain calm.

Top four is on the cards but we need to stop dropping silly points as we did today.

I can't remember why I joined this war.
So if Tottenham and Liverpool would win their games tomorrow we would have 4 teams between 45 and 48 points fighting for the last two CL spots behind City and Chelsea. I have a feeling that this will be a close afair until the end of the season.

Well they were underperforming since they started playing better arsenal have overtaken us and liverpool are closing in says well, it's not just the last couple of games their improvement has been obvious for a long time now, we aren't getting any better, anyone can see that.

Looks like we will be scrapping with Liverpool, Soton and Spurs for 4th place. Does anyone know what happens if Liverpool, Everton or Spurs win the Europa? Is that an extra place or does it replace 4th place?

If one of them win the Europa, it'd be an extra place for the PL, unless Arsenal wins the CL and finish outside the top 4.

Keep Rodgers at Pool.
Its like OP is hoping we fail. When we pick up points he goes quiet, but as soon as we lose a game he comes here to say "I told you so." I reiterate: muppet.

Relax its football. Lots more twist and turns to follow, and don't even bother with the fixture lists, they mean nothing from this moment on. The big difference this year is at least we are in the shake up which is progress.....

Why do you think that? We struggle against teams like Preston and Burnley. I wish i had your confidence
Because people forget for us to drop out of the top four those around us 'all' have to go on good runs which is highly unlikely. They are not Chelsea and City. This time next month we will be third. I'll even repost this. However don't expect us to play better football this season.

Other teams are all slowly ticking away the tough games while we drop points against average sides and have 6 of the 7 best teams still to play.

I'm not convinced we'll even be close come May.

Taking the next corner instead of Jones!
We're still in at this point. If 'pool win this afternoon then we're still 4th with Arsenal one point ahead and 3 teams close behind. Arsenal's run-in looks the easiest, so barring an implosion due to CL/FA Cup participation they must be feeling pretty confident for one of the two spots leaving us battling it out with Southampton; and Spurs and Liverpool who are in Europa competition still. We can remain positive (and hopeful) or else we might as well just give up now … because no amount of moaning on here (and I've done my fair share) will change the outcome!

I'd rather Southampton win regardless of my love for Liverpool. I think LFC winning would make it more difficult for us to finish top 4. For some reason I expect Southampton to have another run of poor results.

As someone said before, now we have to up our game and get results against the big teams. No cushion anymore.

we are likely to pick up lots of spirited draws in our run in so no... We won't be in the Champions League next year barring a Spurs/Liverpool implosion

Our defeats haven't been the issue - it's draws away to 10 man Villa, Stoke and the 2nd half of the Spurs game where we barely created chances - felt the writing was on the wall at West Ham where we created very little

We were unlucky early season with injuries but the constant chopping and changing hasn't helped - is LVG the only person who thinks that Herrera shouldn't have been one of the first names on the teamsheet?

Was actually happy with our performance yesterday and felt we were very unlucky - if we play like that to the end of the season not sure where we would finish - could win plenty but will concede plenty too

We've been a top striker and top CB away from being a solid Top 4 side - an Aguero and a Kompany

Sadly the Falcao gamble has failed (due to awful tactics mainly) and Rojo looks a good back up player in a top team

I think a lot of players need to pull fingers out of certain areas and put more effort in. I really only see less than a handful of players truly playing for the shirt right now. It also doesn't help that the formation and goddamn "philosophy" is working heavily against us!

We're basically a one man team through out the season DDG has bailed us out in countless games were we have been battered by poor sides.

It certainly seems to be heading that way, I can’t remember the last time we put in a convincing performance. On paper, we have a fantastic squad and an even better team, we have World Class players that many teams can only dream of having and we have a better squad than many of the tams around us. I find it annoying how the players are classed as World Class at the start of the season but when tactics restrict their ability they suddenly become useless and should be ‘shipped out’ It’s up to the manager to get the best out of the players and to do that he has to play in a certain way to get the best out of them. He’s not doing that, instead he is playing to his “philosophy” which along with others have no idea what that is.

There is only one person responsible for our shit form and that person is the manager. I remember only a few months ago how we were all laughing at Rodgers, how we all thought he had wasted a fortune in the transfer market, how the tables have turned.

I've said if we don't manage to get all the points from Burnley, Swansea and Sunderland we won't make top 4 considering the games to come.

Hope I'm proofed wrong but its getting more and more unlikely.

Maybe later today we are already behind instead of having some points advantage to 5th.

If Liverpool and Spurs both get through in the Europa league, we will be playing Spurs after their first leg and Liverpool after their second leg. Sounds good :)
