10. Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal) – 30.1 km/h

9. Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich) – 30.4 km/h

8. Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich) – 30.7 km/h

7. Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) – 31.2 km/h

6. Lionel Messi (Barcelona) – 32.5 km/h

5. Theo Walcott (Arsenal) – 32.7 km/h

4. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) – 33.6 km/h

3. Aaron Lennon (Tottenham, on loan at Everton) – 33.8 km/h

2. Gareth Bale (Real Madrid) – 34.7 km/h.

1. Antonio Valencia (Manchester United) – 35.1 km/h

On a serious note, is this fastest, whilst running with the ball or without? I'm assuming without, hence Rooney is surprisingly high on the list?

Apparently Bellerin is super fast, fastest in Arsenal's team. They say his speed over 40 metres is quicker than Bolt's first 40 metres in his 100m sprint

Skill/Speed/Power in that order = the most complete player. Hence for me CR7 is and has been for sometime the best player in the world.

Yeah Johnny Vaughn was saying the same the other morning, he beats Theo in races in training, thus proving this list is arse. It looks like the same list from the last 4 or 5 seasons.

Piracy on the High Seas.
Lucas Moura needs to be somewhere in the Top 10 at the very least.

That list is bullshit.

I'm pretty sure Mathis Bolly or Hector Bellerin are the fastest player in Europe. Walcott and Aubameyang should be just behind.

Stats don't tell the full story.

But it does show that Rooney isn't the fat and washed up loser that some on here claim.

He is the leanest and fittest he's been in his career.

Where does general footballing ability rank?

Clearly quite far down if you think that Ronaldo is better than Messi.

I think that's right. It's why Spain were shite for so long playing with all of those slow, weak midgets like Iniesta, Silva and Xavi.

I think Jordi Alba would beat most of the players on that list on a foot race. One on one he seems faster than Ronaldo ffs.

I honestly thought it read daftest footballers – top 10.

Anyway, it's apparently based on performances across the “major leagues” (only England, Spain and Germany represented as far as I can see) during the last couple of months.

Bellerin clearly has an insane sprint on him, but I suppose he hasn't reached his top speed in an actual match during the last couple of months. Which is...yeah. In other words, the list is a bit random and a bit silly, really.

But it does prove that Rooney is faster than many give him credit for. I remember him ranking high on a similar list based on last year's WC performances too.

To be fair to Rooney he can move for a big lad, once he gets going he'll eat up the ground on most defenders.

Aubameyang´s top speed last season (there is no data I found this season, but I doubt he got slower) was 35,1 km/h, which would tie him with Valencia on this highly "competent" list. With that he is actually not even the fastest player of the Bundesliga. Timo Werner (Stuttgart) with 35,3 km/h and André Hahn (back then at Augsburg, now Gladbach) with 35,4 km/h would top this list.

Bear in mind, that this is just about top speed and not accelaration. The "slowpoke" Mats Hummels for example has a top speed of nearly 33 km/h.

The problem here is that the players aren't getting compared like-for-like. These are speeds sourced from match situations with all of the hundreds of variables that encompasses. They are actually quite slow compared to track speeds for instance (no surprise given the above). The only way to fairly compare them is to time them in proper sprints on the track or training ground. I remember in my youth either Shoot or Match magazine went around all the training grounds to find out Britain's fastest player (timing them over 100m), hardest shot (seeing who could whack the Mitre Delta the hardest), and longest throw-in (a brilliantly British thing to measure).

Apparently Bellerin is super fast, fastest in Arsenal's team. They say his speed over 40 metres is quicker than Bolt's first 40 metres in his 100m sprint
As quick as Bellerin is, that is bollocks. I know it was reported widely in the media at the time by dippy journalists. When footballers are timed on the training ground, they often benefit from hand-timing (typically 0.24s quicker) and usually no gun reaction (first movement through a set of electronic gates is a common one and saves oodles of time).

Is it too much to ask for players to just complete track times in training and then have the fastest ones publicised? This silliness has gone on far enough.

Its not due to hand timing. Arsenal measure the final 40 metres as opposed to Bolt's recorded first 40m. The journalists left that bit out. Bellerin may be fast over a distance but his first 40 is sure as hell isn't as fast as Bolts.

Wow. Rooney's a quick little player. He's shorter than Herrera, who's often described as a good little player.
