Aesthetically or philosophically speaking, I think it's extra depressing to see Xavi take this blood money because he was a great player by virtue of his ability to connect with other human beings and create great things. This is the opposite of that, basically.

Title should be changed; A whore sells their own body for money. Xavi is now doing marketing for slavers over 130 years after his homeland - the only place he has lived - abolished the practice.

That's by far the best comment of the thread. It's really a big shame to see him go out and do something like that when there were plenty of options such as retiring now and then make a Scholes of himself if his body feels like it, or go to the MLS or to another place where there's no controversy.

But hey, they're great guys really. And who cares about how many people have died? The important thing is we don't have to travel to matches the day before anymore!
I've seen this image plenty of times. Any images/stats for the amount of deaths in construction in general for the countries above?

I just don't see how Qatar would make him earn more money than what was originally promised to Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka when they got into that bizarre thing known as Shanghai Shenhua.
They just picked the wrong Chinese team, Guangzhou Evergrande is still paying top dollar (yuan).

 people actually saying it's ok because he's just making money while he can.
It's bizarre.

Anyone that is championing the Qatar World Cup still, even after all the news about the deaths and their stance on homosexuality, is disgusting.

Well to be fair Xavi's he's a white rich heterosexual of course it going to be great place to live.

But yes it's a very odd thread title(@Americano You know Fergie said some pretty odd things about Qatar as well.).
I don't want to perpetuate rumours but Xavi was seen with men countless times. Maybe that was his younger years since he has a family now.

Should he really be dating his teammates?
I was joking.

Anyway I just guessing that he was straight(had no idea he had a wife and kids)just from the fact he's playing football in Qatar. I can't image any gay footballer not matter how much they offer going there.I mean there's still a stigma in Europe about it as it seems the only time a footballer comes out is when he's about to retire.

I think before they are allowed to say anything about how great qatar is, and I include Fergie here, they should be forced to watch the qataris give someone 40 lashes for having an alcoholic drink (it happens around 30 times a year on average). Back stripped of its flesh for having a drink.

See how great it looks to them then.

Yeah, but they don't have to travel to matches the day before in Qatar. So, you know, it evens itself out.

I'm pretty sure drinking is accepted in Qatar, at least not to that extreme. It's no Saudi Arabia.

This must be the new Qatari - pick off retiring legends and give them massively inflated "wages" to act as ambassadors.

Nothing new. They had plenty of star players in their league in the last 10 years at least. The league itself used to give each club $10M to bring in star players to increase the popularity, and that was back in 2003.

This thread is a bit racist and should be deleted. Xavi going to play in Qatar has got nothing to do with corruption in FIFA or in the Qatari FA and obviously he got a great offer and the lifestyle appealed to himself and his family there.

Everyone on here has got a raging stiffy in the hope of signing Witsel from a Russian team. But surely we should not associate ourselves with a player that chose to play in a corrupt place like Russia if we're going to go down that road?

Editing my own posts.
I'm sure for a rich celebrity there to boost the Nation's image, a few years in Qatar will be eminently luxurious for him. There's a lot of shit they do wrong, but looking after wealthy VIPs isn't one of them. It's basically the whole raison d'etre of the place. It's easy to say he's going there for money and corporate tie-in reasons (because he is) but that doesn't mean his personal requirements won't be met and then some.

Admittedly for a player with nothing more to prove or earn, you'd have thought the Beckham/Henry/Gerrard route of the coastal US high life would make more sense, it's certainly what I'd do, but even that'd seem incongruous for him tbf.

Not that I approve, but I'm also not surprised. He's a footballer, not an Amnesty ambassador. Most of the disappointment stems from people hanging idealised impressions on him due to the way he plays. Same often happens with Pirlo or Scholes. The less assuming the player, the more likely they are to be assumed a great wit or intelect. 'Tis better to remain silent and all that jazz.

hes already proven he wouldn't care by accepting a nice "bonus" to spout utter bull. He will know exactly what the country is like as do the rest of the world but he will chose to ignore it for the sake of $$$$. Which means he's a complete Cnut.

People saying fair play to him for earning all he can in the short playing time he has left or saying there's nothing wrong with what he said, like a few responses on the 1st page of this thread are complete morons.

I sincerely doubt he'll spend 3 years there. Certain to become tedious after a while, if not totally unbearable. In plenty of jobs where people accept high pays to live in the rich zones of the middle east, I have the impression a sizeable portion ends up quitting despite of the money because there's only so much bullshit (at least from your perspective) you can endure.

I can not get mad at Footballers or athletes in general for agreeing to things like this. You can only play Football for so long. You can not really be that choosy when it comes who writes you that check.

Too many people have died, so to hear this from xavi right now is kinda disappointing. People have every right to call him out for it.

I do think it's wrong what he said, but this is over the top. If you're going down that route, every player in Russia, Qatar, the USA and countless other countries would be a cnut? I'm not having that. You're all condemning the wrong person here - it's FIFA, the Qatari FA and other big players in this corrupted system who're the bad guys. But have a go at him all you want, because he shouldn't have said that. I'm only saying it's hardly surprising he's going to be complimentary about the guys giving him all the $$$, and if that makes him a cnut in your opinion, so be it.
