My wit's end
I'm a bit old school when it comes to listening to albums. I like to start at the beginning and go all the way to end. I don't skip tracks or fast forward or start on anything other than track 1.

Inevitably, there's going to be at least one song that I always look forward to because it's the best on the album. But sometimes there are two in a row which makes the anticipation even greater.

For example:

On Bad by Michael Jackson, Dirty Diana is track 9 and Smooth Criminal is track 10
On 2001 by Dr Dre, Forget About Dre is track 10 and The Next Episode is track 11
On Grace by Jeff Buckley, Mojo Pin is track 1 and Grace is track 2
On White Pony by The Deftones, RX Queen is track 4 and Street Carp is track 5

What are your two favourite consecutive songs on any album?

On Nas' Illmatic, Halftime is #4 and Memory Lane (Sittin' in the park) is #5

Although to be fair the entire album is immense, those two are my favourite songs from the album.

Consecutive...

Green day - Holiday and boulevard of broken dreams (maybe not the best but they are two halves of a hole)

First four songs of "Lost in a dream" by War on Drugs are brilliant. Hard to pick which two.

Helplessness blues is my favourite album but I can't actually pick a duo. It's fairly spread out.

Is This It - The Strokes. You can pretty much take the 11 songs consecutively.

Cradle of Filth - Midian - Creatures That Kissed in Cold Mirrors and Her Ghost in the Fog.

Beatles - White Album - While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Happiness Is a Warm Gun.

Killers - Hot Fuss - Jenny Was a Friend of Mine and Mr. Brightside.

Waxahatchee - American Weekend - Bathtub and I Think I Love You.

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head - The Scientist and Clocks.

U2 - Joshua Tree - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and With or Without You.

Was going to say LITD too (Under the Pressure & Red Eyes).

Anyway, off the top of my head

Airbag & Paranoid Android on Ok Computer (Radiohead)
Dance Yrself Clean & Drunk Girls on This is Happening (LCD Soundsystem)
Black Dog & Rock and Roll on IV (Led Zeppelin)
Untitled & Obstacle 1 on Turn on the Bright Lights (Interpol)

GnR Appetite for Destruction
Mr Brownstone > Paradise City > My Michelle

Queen A Kind of Magic
One Vision > A Kind of Magic

Reckoner - House of Cards (In Rainbows, Radiohead)

Black Sheep Boy - For Real (Black Sheep Boy, Okkervil River)

Jesus etc. - Ashes of American Flags (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Wilco)

You think I ain't worth a dollar... - No One Knows (Songs for the Deaf, QotSA)

I'd go Hanging Tree > Go With The Flow personally.

My favourite album though, it's absolutely brilliant!

Actually, I do love the album.

But 'Someday' and 'Last Night' are easily the best two tracks on the album. If 'Alone, Together' wasn't in between them, those two would be near the top of my list.

The best songs are usually the 2nd and 3rd tracks anyway

The National Anthem --> How to Disappear Completely (Radiohead)

Stars of Track & Field --> Seeing Other People (Belle & Sebastian)

Teardrop --> Inertia Creeps (Massive Attack)

This Charming man > Still Ill (Smiths)

Fire and the Thud > Cornerstone (Arctic Monkeys)

N.Y State of Mind > Life's a Bitch (Nas)

Electric Feel > Kids (MGMT)

Smooth Sailing > I Appear Missing (QotSA)

The National Anthem > How to Disappear Completely (Radiohead)

I wanna be adored > She bangs the Drums (Stone Roses)

In terms of revenue, I'd be surprised if anything tops the two tracks that open Queen's 'News of the World' album: 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are the Champions'.

Not my personal favourites, but that is a lot of cash in two consecutive songs.

It's a very dangerous game to call any song on that album the definitive best. Go back and have a listen another day and you'll decide on something different! If I have to pick two consecutive ones, I'll probably opt for 'Last Night' and 'Hard to Explain'.

But 'The Modern Age' and 'Soma' would push it close and you have 'Barely Legal' and 'Someday' or 'Hard to Explain' and 'New York City Cops' as well. Haven't even mentioned 'Is This It' or "Take It or Leave It'. What a bloody album that was.

Wonderwall and Don't look back in anger shouldn't be far off to be honest

Thriller, Beat It and Bille Jean all come after one another on Thriller. I reckon some combination of those must come close.

Also, I get irrationally angry when people write that Strokes song as 'Last night' for some reason

Beatles, three songs from Abbey Road*: Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight and The End.

Here are some...

Punishment and Shades of Gray from Urban Discipline, an album by Brooklyn hard core band Biohazard.

Heartwork and Embodiment from Heartwork by Carcass are great two punch as well.

Should I Stay or Should I Go from Combat Rock by the great The Clash have to be up there.

Modern Love and China Girl (could add third as well, Let's Dance) from Let's Dance by David Bowie.

Save a Prayer and The Chauffeur from Duran Duran's Rio.

Love the start of Fad Gadget's Fireside Favourites, Pedestrian and State of the Nation.

Of course, Fatboy Slim has to be up there with You've Come a Long Way, Baby - Right Here, Right now and perfect continuation, The Rockafeller Skank.

Mystereality and Electricity from OMD as well!

Pink Floyd : Animals. Dogs, Pigs and Sheep are back to back. Both combos are unbelievable.
Pearl Jam : Ten. Black -> Jeremy.
Sabbath : Paranoid. Planet Caravan and Iron Man are back to back.

Countless really..

Would you believe that I have listened to that song several thousand times, seen them live and loved them for years...

... and am only now discovering that it's spelled 'Last Nite' !

Without me, sing for the moment and superman come consecutively on the eminem show. Wait there's a skit between two of those but still that skit is probably top class too.

On Grace by Jeff Buckley, Mojo Pin is track 1 and Grace is track 2

Strong contender - both songs written by (and played with) guitar genius Gary Lucas. I'm not surprised they were picked to open the record.

Artist: Chris Whitley
Album: Dirt Floor, released 1998
Tracks: 1) Dirt Floor 2) Indian Summer
