Arsenal 3:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 04 October 2015

Not sure how we kept them to only 3 goals. Ox hit the crossbar the end, and De Gea made at least 2 big saves, though the shots were right at him. The point is that Arsenal tore us apart at times and could easily have been 5 or 6 nil. They won, they should rightfully enjoy it, but didn't really avenge the 8-2.

Absolute shambles, pathetic performance, especially against those soft cocks.

Wow! My team rating is a whole 1.7 lower than the average. Clearly I shouldn't make ratings when I'm in such a mood.

LvG lost us the game.

It was so obvious even before the KO we were going get run over in midfield. Arsenal need space and time and it's exactly what United set-up provided.

Firstly, congrats to Arsenal on a superb performance. They started brilliantly and finished the game in 20mins. Excellent stuff.

Coming to us. Very poor from start to finish. I won't go overboard as these things happen from time to time but we should tweak our style and system based on the occasion. Schneiderlin should have started today as we needed his energy in the middle.

We just didn't start playing at KO, much like the game at Southampton. Absolutely poor. Had we done so, it would have been a very even game as I don't think there is much between the 2 sides.

Agree with this too.,

The reason why today's result wasn't shocking was for the following reason:

United dominate possession but Arsenal were happy to absorb the pressure and look for further goals on the counter-attack. United tested Cech a few times but struggled to create many clear goalscoring opportunities

Replace the words Arsenal and remove 'further goals' and you could apply this to far too many matches under Van Gaal. We're far too toothless and our attacking play is too slow. Generally this approach is effective when we've scored an early goal, or at least don't concede, but when we're chasing games it really hampers us.

A result like this isn't shocking, and I would bet good money on similar results throughout the season.

Where does it leave us? 3 points less.

TOP of table - woohoo! Martial is bypitw. Philosophy works. Darmian best right back. Mata best stats. Quadruple is on.

Lose 3-0 to Arsenal. Players are shite. LVG is a dinosaur. Relegation ensues.

The Caf - extrapolation and prediction at its best. Where everyone owns the best crystal ball.

Becoming classic Van Gaal, this. We'll no doubt go on to draw and lose a couple more in the hangover from this result, just as we'd hit our form and gone top of the table. Beyond infuriating.

Bad day at the office all round.

LVG didn't set us up right, we looked tired, we were stunned by Arsenal's unusual intensity and we then totally ran out of ideas to get us back into the game.

Still, it's important to remember that things are still going well overall this season. Early October and we're third, a couple of points off the top. That's a perfectly fine position to be in.

Today was bad and lessons need to be learned but we shouldn't overreact and forget the positives of this season either.

How unusual? They do it all the time, last season even was a perfect example. They just finished this time

OK you self-loathing United fans.. Time to continue talking shite about our(your) captain, respect the other team and totally give up on the chance of winning anything.. GO!

We deserved something from this, it's not the first time this season the opposition had a good spell in the game in where every piece of luck was in their side and they capitalized in every chance in that period. Otherwise we controlled the ball and were on the attack.

Schweinsteiger was our best player in terms of energy. Fair play to him. Never stopped running.

Rooney was diabolical in the fory half but thought he did alright in the second. Kept on trying.

Wilson looked decent when he came on.

At least those who got giddy after going top can forget about us winning the league. Top four is the only realistic aim.

That first 20 minutes was like getting beaten up by the soft hipster in his skinny jeans and Doctor Who scarf.

Carrick, Blind, Schweini and Rooney were so poor in that first half, three of them too slow to catch cold and Schweini racing around like a 20 year of getting his first start. Memphis was amazingly even worse, no effort at all.

The thing was if Martial had scored his self created chance right at the end of the first half I felt we might have been able to get back into it as Arsenal are bottlers, but it was not to be and the second half was a case of them just letting uis have the ball and hoping to catch us on the counter.

If this game has shown anything, it's Schweinsteiger + Carrick isn't working. Need Schneiderlin there plus one of the other, preferably Schweinteiger. Rooney seriously needs to be dropped, how in the blue moon is his place still justified, captain or not.

Shocking. But i dont think we'll be beaten by that margin again this season.

I choose to look at this defeat in isolation because defensively we have been great this season but all that was undone by our start. Still LvG didnt help with playing with 2 30 year old CMFers today
Expect us to go into a shell like we did after Leicester..even more defensive.

Bad day. Got it wrong. Needed to be a 3 man midfield with an actual midfielder at the tip, rather than Rooney. Schweinsteiger had a bad game, but can't fault his effort, as it seemed he was the only one trying to close anyone down. He had to venture forward because the players infront of him were just watching the game happen.

Someone in the match thread got pelted pre-kick off for suggesting we play with Young and Valencia on the wings instead of Memphis and Mata, but it really wasn't a bad shout considering how little Mata and Memphis (especially Memphis) tracked back. Darmian and Young were getting turned over as Arsenal's wideman and full backs came at them in tandem. Young and Valencia wouldn't have let that happen in the same way.

Schneiderlin needed to start. Couldn't believe he didn't even come on as a sub. 4-2-3-1 away from home (which is more like a 4-4-2 given Rooney's minimal input in midfield and off the ball) is just too open.

We got blitzed, game over after 20 minutes. The places of Rooney and Memphis needs to be seriously under threat. Young is no fullback and the tactic involving Schweini pressing high on his own needs to be reviewed. Otherwise there is no need to panic and credit to Arsenal for flying out of the blocks after their near CL elimination midweek.

I thought Rooney looked really up for it from about 30 minutes on, and this is coming from someone who has thought he's been rubbish for the last many months.

Just one of those days where everything Arsenal tried turned to gold and nothing really worked for us.

When you consider our next two games, it isn't fantastic either.

Given Chelseas collapse, I did raise my expectation to us challenging for the league and outlasting Arsenal in the title race. I always expected City to win it but even 4 points from the next 2 games will still feel like a disappointment given what we should be going for.

Posted this in the match day thread by accident:
Second half was ok. Quite obviously need another quality attacking option so that we can rotate a bit more. At the moment we have so little competition that Rooney and Memphis keep starting matches despite being horribly out of form. I don't think Carrick can play alongside Schweinsteiger, and I don't think Fellaini is effective in a midfield two. In my opinion, people have generally been overcritical of Rooney, but he needs to be dropped for the Everton game. We need to play a proper midfield three, and Rooney rarely performs well against Everton anyway.

That's as good as it gets for Arsenal this season, we are much much better than what we showed today and will finish about them.

There are losses and there are embarrassments, this had the potential to be the latter but thankfully a 3-0 is all it got.

A horrific 20 minute period, not to take anything away from Arsenal they were the best team after that as well but we did better in the second half. Arsenal say back though cause they'd done their job so not sure how much credit we can take from that.

The midfield setup was all wrong, our slowest combination against the nippiest midfield in the league..? Perplexed at Schneiderlin's omission.

Rooney needs dropping and let's see how he responds. His desire, first touch, creativity, control are all over the place.

Martial was the only bright spark and he had another good game.

We go again?

For such a fast game herrera and schneidelrin should have started, Carrick and BFS couldn't slow the game to their pace until will after the damage was done. Ah well hindsight and all that.

We were found out today. We are quick to ridicule and belittle the pundits who continually say that United don't look a good side, and find comfort in less than convincing results. I honestly see us as a squad who will have to fight again for a CL spot and will not be anywhere near the top of the table come the end of the season. It pains me to say it but even after such a massive rebuilding we have deficiencies all over the field. Even worse, the LVG philosophy has me scratching my head and I fear a couple more hidings before this season is out. I Think some other teams with far, far less resources are performing to higher standards than LVG has us doing.

Rooney remains undroppable even though he has been abjectly poor this entire season. If we don't have someone else that could do a better job for us in that role then we are in massive trouble.

LVG is intent on starting Memphis every match even though he has shown very little in the BPL. I know he is young but he needs to be rotated to make him aware that he has to grow and fight for his position.

Hard to believe that we lose our left back and the best we have in reserve to fill that position is Ashley Young. Unacceptable. LVG speaks of balance but he needs to accept that our squad isn't balanced if this can happen.

I think Blind has done fairly well for us, but let's be honest...we aren't going to win anything with him as a starting CB.

Carrick is aging. BFS was great value but also on the wrong side of 30. We are going to have to rebuild our midfield again starting this next summer.

Chelsea, while in a massive crisis, beat them without getting out of 2nd gear ffs

West Ham beat them too.....AND AND Liverpool destroyed them and were unlucky not to win
So what? Chelsea lost to Southampton and we beat them?

Arsenal were fantastic today, both offensively and defensively. That first 20 minutes it was like they had a cheat code or something.

We were dire.

Van Gaal came to the game with the wrong tactics and we paid the price.

The players on the whole also didn't have much to show for themselves.

Even in the second half when it seemed that we had most of the possession, we were not really in control of the game, and they rarely showed the urgency that Manchester United should show when 3-0 down against one of our greatest rivals.

The only positive really for me was Martial. He wasn't at his best today and never really got into the game but he was still very exciting to watch every time he got the ball.

Needless to say that 'Rooney needs to be dropped'. Just as I expected Martial to do something exciting every time he got the ball, I expected the opposite of Rooney. It's depressing to say about a player who has given us so many incredible moments. I still hope that this is just a bad run of form but he simply needs to be dropped at this point. We have far better options.

Last note is that Wilson's short cameo showed a bit of promise as well.

Now to take my mind off football...

We lost 3-0 at Highbury in the treble year. Shit happens.

The only thing that genuinely annoyed me was waiting so long to make a change.

We've had a hell of a lot of success against Arsenal down the years and on a few occasions they've performed like today but not be as clinical so it was coming

Just need to repay the favour when they come to OT

I don't want to see Carrick and Schweini together in the middle again. I'd also like to see us at least try a game without Rooney. Play 4-3-3.

Memphis - Martial - Mata
---Herrera-------Schewini
--------Schneiderlin------

After today, I'd probably play Young instead of Memphis too. I'm not too sure where Herrera is, but if he's not available then I suppose we'd have to play Carrick/Fellaini. I'd love to see Pereira play there, but I doubt LVG will trust him.

We just need to change things up. Stop playing the same teams and hoping that it works. Teams always figure you out, which is what happened today. Change it up!

Well that was shit. Darmian a bit unlucky for the 3rd. I thought he'd tackled Sanchez. We were set up wrong. Schweini leaving big gaps in midfield. Basically a clusterfeck. Especially against a team as spineless as Arsenal

You do realise the Caf is made up of different people with different opinions do you? Sheesh.
