two managers with a closet full of trophies and an atrocious recent track record. if anything, we should be going with a winner who is riding high RIGHT NOW.
Signing Mourinho now is like signing Rooney now. At your own peril.
He's a bad 6 months ffs.

His last league title was just 8 months ago.
LVG's last league title was 5 years ago.

Mourinho has win things recently.

LVG won most of his trophies 20 years ago. In this century, he got sacked from Barca for being near the relegation zone, managed to not qualify Holland in WC when they had one of the top teams in the world, won a title in 5 years for AZ, won an title with Bayern and then was sacked the following season for being out of UCL zone, got the third place with Holland in 2014 WC.

Durint those same years, Mourinho won a couple of league titles in Portugal, won UCL and UEFA Cup with Porto, won 3 league titles with Chelsea, won a league title with Madrid, won a UCL and 2 league titles with Inter.

LVG trophies since Mourinho is a manager: 2 league titles
Mourinho's: 8 league titles, 2 UCL, 1 UEFA

LVG is more similar to Trappatoni rather than Mourinho. He's a relic of the past century.

If you like the football Mourinho's teams have been playing in recent history and think this is the way forward to another Champions League trophy, fair game. I got my sights set higher than scraping to another title with defensive as feck football just to get found out by the likes of Bayern, Barca or even PSG as soon as the going gets tough.

just don't mistake popular opinion with swarm intelligence. main motivators for appointing mourinho are fear of the unknown, fear of missing out and damage limitation.
I dont want Mourinho here. Cant stand him. He still uses the same playing system when he first came to prominence, his football hasnt evolved at all. On top of that he is a massive twat, his main focus is himself not his club or that clubs history etc. Only interested in himself or telling people how great he is.

No to mourinho. He is a self obsessed twat who turns on his own when the going gets tough. Every win is down to him, every loss is the players fault. Bobby Charlton was right first time round and he'll be right now. feck off Jose.

Yep, he was so right, that after 2.5 years we are going to sack the second manager, and we have been far away from a title as Earth is from Andromeda.

Genius decision. I hope we don't sign Ronaldo cause he hits puppies.

I would not sacrifice our principles to win anything with mourinho in charge. Yes he'd definitely have done better than moyes and lvg but I still don't want him here.
He has 0 class.
Have you forgotten what a complete cnut he is? Or would trade that in to win another league title?

I also want Mourinho in, but I think it's a fair point. His record over the last 5 years post Inter isn't that flattering. He also needs to adapt, because his brand/idea of football is now also beginning to look outdated.

He won 2 league titles in the last 4.5 years, and reached 3 UCL semi-finals.

Would take that record over what we have.

I like Mourinho, yes he's arrogant and occasionally a twat but similar to Ronaldo that's part of what makes him one of the best.

Positives
- Proven winner, obviously this was used for Van Gaal as well but Mourinho's record is far more recent not to mention also in the Premier League.
- Big name, similar to Guardiola he has an attraction that potential signings will be influenced by. Also his agent is Mendes who's already pally with Woodward so might give us an advantage in the transfer market.
- Tactically one of the best, masterminded God knows how many big match triumphs.

I think the majority of these would transfer directly should he manage us, I'd expect he'd deliver trophies.

Negatives
- Has a woeful record regarding youth, something that we're not only famed for but also the current squad is full of young players who need moulding.
- When he acts up it can get real ugly, Tito eye gouge, Caniero incident, calling out his own players. Etc.
- Not long term, 3 seasons seems to be the maximum before he upsets the wrong people or things start falling apart.
- Style of play, often criticised for being boring and pragmatic.

The style of play he gets labelled for has never really bothered me, I want to win and even so I think his sides can play great football. Him acting up and long term struggles might be aided by getting the job he seems to have always wanted, like another posters said we're maybe big enough to tame him and the environment is nowhere near as toxic as Madrid's. My biggest concern would be his approach to developing youth players for the reasons listed.

In short he'd be my second choice option, I'd only prefer Guardiola.

If we give Mourinho a blank check in the summer(if he was to be manager), I'd be very confident he'd make great signings.

Still a bit reserved though. He seems to have lost his way a bit. Maybe there was some issues with Roman behind closed doors. And the football he plays is often too pragmatic to a fault. I prefer Pep.

I've written off this season and rather wait for Pep G.
Sure.
And I'd like to date Miss World - it doesn't mean that it's realistically possible.
My understanding is that PG has an agreement in place with MCFC. If that is the case, we need to start planning, rather than pining for PG and then being left without a manager in the Summer and then end up having to hire a manager of the level Moyes, because nobody was available.

Right now Guardiola, Ancelotti and Mourinho are all going to be at new clubs next year. We need to get one of them.

A moany, whiny egomaniac? Why not? At least he has some personality traits the resemble a manager from better days.

I think he's a massive knob, but I think we need a bit of a knob to come in and shake things up.

Gone are the days of this 'long term' dream. You ain't getting another 20 year manager folks, let that dream die hard.

If the powers that be see LVG's position as untenable and Jose wants the United job for the right reasons, I'm all for it.

at this moment in time? yeah, feck it, sign him up. Pep is just gonna procrastinate and end up at City. May as well get Jose in.

Only thing with Jose is his youth record. It's fecking abysmal. Not sure he's the right guy to develop Martial et al.

Is he capable of another 04/05 season? I suppose his 11/12 year with Madrid is pretty unreal. Chelsea were relentless for a lot of last year too.

He was very keen on getting Rooney a couple of years ago for Chelsea. Do we think Mourinho now would have the balls to drop Wayne?
Yes, because at the time Rooney was hot property. He was capable of scoring many goals and was World class.
Today, at his current scoring rate, he will finish on about 5 goals in the season. Yes, you read that right - 5 goals in a full season.
Just as Mourinho benched Falcao, he'll do the same with Rooney. Mourinho is all about the final result and wont do this, "Rooney is my captain and my captain shall always play" nonsense.
If he sucks, Rooney will not play under Mourinho.

They scored 3 fewer goals than us and conceded 14 more in the league this season
So basically, you are using Mourinho's worst season in his entire career, as the yard stick to judge him and ignoring all his other seasons?

Like he motivated the Chelsea players or Madrid players?
Yep. He motivated Chelsea to win the title last year. And he motivated Real Madrid to also win the league (which included a stellar Barca side).

So you compare his worst spell.

I know you don't want Mourinho. But the hate for him is silly.

He gets results.

He wins trophies wherever he goes. We going to be winning feck all for 3 years. Do you want it to be 5 years?

His team are capable of playing great football. He will be defensive in big away games. Just like Ferguson was, but people forget that.

Pep hasn't had to be a defensive manager because he has had some of the best attackers in the world at both clubs. Did you see his defensive tactics at Barca away though? Suicidal.

I'm all for appointing Pep. But it doesn't look like that will happen.

Good post. Adding to this, I think he's far more likely to adapt his tactics to fit those of the opposition in comparison to LvG. Similar to the tactics point, I think we'd stand in far better stead in Europe than if we were to have van Gaal in charge. The 2010 Semi-Final game away to Barcelona springs to mind. Tactically brilliant that night.

changed my vote because at this point in time it's clear we need a breath of fresh air in our team.

with ancelotti and guardiola seemingly headed to bayern and city respectively, next best option seems like mourinho, who I still rate as a great manager despite his recent poor season. I despise mourinho's character but what's clear is he can win trophies in the premier league and in modern times.

From a cnut to an another cnut, to an another cnut. Changes nothing in that aspect.

And then of course it is 'cnut, but our cnut'. Unless he becomes shit like the current cnut, in which cases he gets transformed to just a 'sackable cnut'.

The only non-cnut manager we have had in the last 30 years is Sir Alex Ferguson. And even him, a large portion of rival fans hate and call him cnut.

I would love a cnut manager who wins games and trophies. Cnut Mourinho has shown to do so.

With Jose, he would spend and we would see a return of a big squad. That's a positive because over the last number of seasons, we've had too many injuries. I think he would thrive under the challenge and I think the club would feel more relaxed with him because at 52, you can plan ahead. It's not the perfect fit but I'm sure the club would make Jose aware that youth is important.
