Just interested in who might be available if:

  • The reports of Giggs not wanting the job on an interim basis are true.
  • This article is true and Mourinho is waiting for the summer (it's been mentioned elsewhere he's been spending time was his sick father and doesn't like taking over mid season anyway):

here is the full article in Spanish ==>> http://deportes.elpais.com/deportes/2016/01/04/actualidad/1451924659_866519.html

Translation of the part that involves Manchester United.

  • And the (slim) possibility of Pep is taken into account.

So who could we call on?

I'd go for a hive-mind of Dalglish, Benitez, Rodgers and Robbie Fowler at the moment

Juande Ramos is free. He was linked with Chelsea before they brought back Hiddink.

Simple. Buy Evra this window, and make him player manager.

Benitez would be ideal if we can't get Jose. Tough, no nonsense... would put Rooney in his place.

I make that 3 serious answers out of 24 replies and even they seem very unlikely... So we want him sacked but don't really have any ideas for what we should do after that, yet we're happy to call Woodward incompetent and negligent for not sacking him.

I seriously cannot think of someone competent who would be happy to take on this job til the summer. I also think that's exactly why Woodward has begged Van Gaal to carry on. The idea of us sacking a manager and not having a plan in place while we still have achievable targets is not only mental but also extremely incompetent and grossly negligent.

His Liverpool supporting wife
Warren Joyce if we're not going to pick Jose.
His work with the Unders should qualify him to at least be the assistant. Fans seem satisfied with his work and he manages to get players back into shape for the first team.
For the sake of continuity and long term stability, this is what I will call a footballing appointment and not a foolish political or commercial one.

We could try and snatch some coach from La Liga, someone like Ernesto Valverde. I think he could do wonders with bringing the best of our Spanish speaking core.

This is basically why his resignation won't be accepted until the end of the season. It's either going to be Mourinho or Guardiola in the summer unless we somehow manage to finish in the top 4 or win the FA cup/Europa League.

This thread kind of illustrates the bind that Woodward finds himself in if LVG walks. Realistically there is no viable interim, unless Giggs accepts it in full knowledge that an experienced manager is coming in during the summer. Alternatively if we appoint Jose there will always be that nagging doubt that we could have waited for Pep; Pep is the bad guy in all of this, he could make a decision about his future now.

Keeping Van Gaal means that its highly likely that his successor will not have champions league football to look forward to next season.

That puts him on the backfoot in terms of the calliber of players he can attract, and Europa league and its half continent travels usually puts a dent on league perfomances.

That also means we might not be able to attract the quality of candidate that we want.

Bringing in someone permanantly gives the squad a boost, and gives us time to properly prepare for the Summer (where we have to contend with the Euros too).

Bayern too tried the 'wait it out method with Van Gaal' . They only threw in the towel in April, and it almost cost them a UCL place.

My fear is that we will stick with LVG, lose Guardiola to City, allow Pochetino and Spurs into the CL and have Mourinho taken by someone else. Then almost have no choice but Giggs. Then, we'll even be more screwed.

Some of the names in here are frightening. I'm all for getting rid of LVG if we can get someone better in but give me LVG over a lot of the names mentioned here.

It's about getting 4th now, that's all we have left to play for. LVG looks dead and all but buried. The idea of him managing to turn things around at this point seems far fetched. Sure, we could limp (or sleepwalk) into 4th somehow, anything's possible. But, again, it looks unlikely. Which means that not pulling the trigger now has Moyes written all over it: Wait until it's mathematically impossible and lose any chance, no matter how slim, of avoiding a total write-off.

In that scenario it's not a question of hiring an ideal replacement, but rather taking a punt on Who Ever as caretaker. LVG is only preferable to Who Ever if there's still some genuine fight left in him. I have my doubts about that, though.

Of course, the bigger picture is the true X factor here. Woody may have his reasons for wanting LVG to stick around beyond some forlorn hope of him turning it around. But regardless of what the long term plan is, surely securing 4th has to be a huge priority. Unless we've already reached an agreement with LVG's successor (someone who will take over regardless of whether we're in the CL next season or not). And that seems highly improbable. Well, if that someone is anyone but Giggs, that is.

Just give it to giggs if he says no then tell him to Feck off along with the rest of LVG's staff.

Giggs has been assistant coach throughout moyes and LVG's crappy reigns, he doesn't derserve the job on a fulltime basis or the promise of the manager job fulltime, either he does it as an interim or not at all.
