It's at least a recognised career path. He knows English football, has contacts and knowledge that would be of benefit, no pressure to qualify for Europe etc None of that applies to the Valencia job.
feck recognised career paths. If you get offered a job then you are qualified to give it a go. You only get one life after all.

He hasn't won any matches with Valencia yet and this is what the league table looks like since he took over.

He should do the honorable thing and resign, he doesn't want to be the man who relegated valencia.

Bigger mistake for Neville. Gave up a great job with Sky.

Odd when he's said he doesn't see himself managing long term.
They would take him back or BT would offer him a position. He was their best pundit. Question is if he would go back to being a pundit or try management again, maybe with a lower league team or a struggling PL team.

Somehow I find this ironic. It is going to be very very hard for him to get another job on a decent level after this debacle.

He's lost a lot of credibility. How can he comment on what others are doing wrong when his only time in the hot seat has been a disaster?

He would get work but he was highly rated as one of the best pundits out there.

Bizarre decision to take the job. Doesn't speak the language for a start do how can he get his ideas across?

Anytime he gives it the 'I'm not having it' stance in reference to anything about modern football he's going to sound like that annoying know-it-all uncle you ignore at family get together.

As I said before - he's intelligent in a raw sense but his book makes him out to be stubborn and fixed as they come.

He's not going to turn this around - he's flat out of his depth.

Well out of his depth and there's no shame in that, only his refusal for Valencia's sake to accept it.

Just looking through some of the reports and this image from the Barca match sums it up.

He's not nearly ready.

So give it to Giggs. Rescue the spirit of the club before you do anything else. Make him the manager, think about roles for Gary and Phil Neville, whose talents are in danger of being obscured by the chaos at Valencia, and give Oxford United boss Michael Appleton, another United alumnus, a senior coaching role.
from Oliver Holt.

It is a terrible thing how we aren't using the 'talents' of Neville brothers.

hence, a hugely damaging few years for british football?
Nope. Just a confirmation on what everyone knew. Hugely damaging years would have been if British managers had some good reputation (we are talking for modern football), and they destroyed it now, but that wasn't the case.

Both the United job and Valencia job were given for completely idiotic reasons and were destined to fail.

Will be ages before a Brit is employed in Spain again.
Well maybe not if Brit manager is prepared properly to go to Spain and manage some club. Learn language first,go watch games there, learn the way how they play there, how media works etc.

If we look the way around, not sure was there a Spanish manager who couldnt say 2 words on English, maybe there was, dunno.

Rodgers speaks Spanish. I wouldn't mind seeing him give Spain a go, but doubt anyone would want to employ another British manager after the exploits of Moyes and Neville.

Pochetino didn't initially speak English and for a year or two gave interviews in Spanish in order to not get misinterpreted.

I think that while the language definitely helps, it isn't make or break.

You would hope that football clubs are not run by simplistic generalizing buffoons who go, "Two British managers were crap so we should just avoid all British managers."

There's a genuine danger that he could relegate them if he stays and there's no improvement.

Why on earth was the previous manager sacked for being five points off the Champions League places? :houllier: Were there other factors?

It does look like a terrible decision in hindsight. Compounded by Nev's failure.

The fans didn't like him because he bought Mendes players and dropped Negredo. I think that's what I've read anyway.

I don't think the Valencia fans realised that the chuckle brothers were waiting in the wings though

Even without hindsight it seemed like a bizarre call to make.

If those are the reasons then they seem silly. And 'Chuckle Brothers'. Seems about right.

It was a combination of performance and other factors. He took most of the heat for the Mendes influence. Some beloved figures like Amadeo and Rufete left the club, it seemed because of Mendes or atleast how the story was told by media. Nuno is Mendes first client and long time friend. He was booed in the pre-season presentation. Its a presentation Valencia have every year before the season begins. So the fans(and the local media) were already on his back. Naturally when the team started under-performing it only got worse and worse, the situation was difficult.

Oh, right, thanks. Valencia fans weren't happy with hiring Neville either were they?

Edit: Double checked and it appears fans were against it. No surprise.
