Former Everton and Manchester United boss Moyes is in a similar position having also expressed an interest in succeeding Benitez.

Moyes would prefer a long term contract and is willing to stay on if the club are relegated, but he will not work as a head coach and wants control over recruitment.

You know what...if Newcastle stay up this season, I'm going to put £100 on them to get top 4 next season or a cheeky punt for the title! There's something about this appointment. We might be taking the piss a bit and I aint a fan of Benitez but after mulling it over, I think Benitez is a perfect fit for the Toon. With a few wins and good performances, the Toon Army are going to come out in their droves again. I can see a Kevin Keegan scenario developing here.

Of course I could be completely wrong and they end up in League 1! But if they stay up, I will sticking a few quid on them next season.

 Hey Listen! Don't knock it! If I'd said the same thing last season about Leicester, you'd be thinking I was bonkers too! You just never know...especially with the new TV money kicking in and Benitez will be a big draw for higher profile players or may just have the Ranieri effect!

Shearer taking them down was the peak.

But Benitez doing the same wouldn't be too bad at all.

Good appointment but wrong time maybe?
Think at this stage, Newcastle players need a man manager rather than a tactician but they're not so far behind so it could work.

Newcastle have been shambolic this season. I know Newcastle and their fans get mocked on here but I admire their restraint . I don't know how at no point this season a Newcastle fan hasn't just walked onto the pitch and punched one of their many pathetic players in the face and then spat on them for good measure.
I thought we had a bunch of spineless cowards playing for us, Newcastle players make our players look like gladiators .

They actually do have good players, well minus Colocinni and Taylor who I can only assume have been kept on all these years because they're on 50 year contracts.

But yeah good appointment but maybe not the right time. Though if he fails to keep them up, shouldn't he too hard to bring them back and start again if he can be arsed to do that.

Jesus, just dawned on me that Benitez could be managing in the Championship in 5 months time. From Real Madrid to the Championship in a year is quite some achievement.

Good appointment for Newcastle provided he can keep them up. With a full pre-season and allowing him to get the players he needs in they will do well.

What happens if he is unable to keep them up? Will he manage them in the Championship?

I think he'll do well. Looking back he did a good job competing with SAF for a while with the shite he had.

Then you have a short memory. Cast your mind back to the height of his Fergie paranoia period in 2009. People on here remember what he said in that interview with Henry Winter.

So I won't be supporting Newcastle either.

Unless their fixture list is a lot tougher than Sunderland and Norwich, I think they'll stay up. Defensively they're a bit shit but going forward they've got a fair bit of talent.

From McClaren to Benitez. That's quite the upgrade. I think he'll save them from relegation, but it'd be remarkable to see him manage in the Championship less than 6 months after managing Real Madrid.

There's no way Newcastle would sack him even if they get relegated.
There's a clause in his contract, if they go down he can walk.

Newcastle have a good chance. They've got some good players going forward like Wijnadum, Sissoko, Shelvey, Doumbia and Perez.

Big Sam vs Fat Rafa. Newcastle vs Sunderland. One will go down (although both could). This is gonna make the Premier League great again for the rest of the season!

Whats just stopping him from quitting anyway?
Well, nothing but it's the same as us all, we want to be seen as being a success in the job we have. If he walks now, that won't make him look good and could have repercussions of future job opportunities. I mean, who wants to be seen walking, when the going gets tough?

I suspect he'll simply walk away if they go down.

That is a good point. Almost every player who played under him say that he is a workaholic and a great tactician but not good at motivating his players. In the long run, if he stays that is, it is a great appointment. They couldn't have done better than him. But i'm not sure if it is the right time.

I wasn't too happy when we appointed him last summer but I really wish the man good luck at Newcastle. I hope he can keep them up.

It's surprising that a team with Wijnaldum, Shelvey, Townsend, Perez, Mitrovic & Sissoko are in the bottom 3 even with Steve Mcclaren as the former manager.

I think that chubby will keep them up as he's knows the premier league and also how to win games

Some very good players at that club. The problem is, there's some players who have way too much influence. Collocini is the main culprit, being a fabulous player when he wants to be but basically believing he is Ashley's right hand man and effective head coach. Its such a weird situation at that club. I hope Benitez can overcome that because I want to go to PL matches next season when I'm living there.
