What're the chances we'll score 5 goals in one game from open play this season?

Call me delusional but I think we will, I'm still expecting us to go on a good run of form at some point and if we come up against a shit defence when we do then scoring 5 is easily done.

Considering last season's results and matches till October [53 matches in Total].. there is a 1/53 chance united will score 5 ;)

Yea, when you think back to the 44 pass goal too, everyone on here was hard thinking this was it, dominance straight ahead!
I was actually the opposite.
I stated that it should not take 44 passes to shoot on goal.
This was hugely worrying.

Yes, if a team are bad enough and let you make 44 passes, you are laughing. But 99% of team will never let you make 20 passes, let alone 44 passes.
If you need to make 44 passes before you take a shot, there is something SERIOUSLY broken. And this is what actually transpired as a few games later we took very few shots on goal. And when you don't score from those few shots on goal, you end up with zero goals. Which is exactly what happened.

Now, in the last 2 games, things have changed. Since Rooney's exclusion, we are making attempts to attack at every opportunity. side/back passing seems to be on the back seat and we have intent. Unfortunately, our defence is now weaker.

Against Midtjylland, but I'll take it. Should've been 6 had Mata not missed that penalty.

5 goals against the minnows from Denmark, but we had a pretty young team too, so a good home game. Especially coming back from a goal down under the pressure of being knocked out.

Good on you lads!

Could have been more. Mata's missed penalty, the sitters from Herrera and Schneiderlin, etc.

Though the thread does say from open play, one of the 5 today was a penalty :D

Technically only 4 from open play since peno is set play and maybe even just 3 if you don't count own goal as "us" but, screw me for raining on 5 goals by us !

Why not? It was a chance created by open play due to an obstruction by the opposition on a clear goal scoring opportunity. So, yea, it does count. No?

Best ever chance coming up. Villa are absolute garbage. An early goal could lead to a pasting. Although, almost as likely we'll draw 0-0.

Rather than do it in a fit of despair, and wreck them, you may as well pop down to your local A&E now and get them surgically removed for transplant.
That's confidence in the Philosophee for you.

Scoring five is being greedy, I'd be happy with three. The lack of goals this season has been shocking, not fun to watch at all. If we can't score a few against this awful Villa side then we will just have to be patient and wait until van Gaal leaves.

Just looking at our goal scoring/difference records over the past few seasons. We rarely seem to slaughter the opposition anymore. Usually our goal difference isn't the best and on the few occasions it has been best it was more down to our rivals being poor than us being anything spectacular.

08/09:
Liverpool: 77-27 (+50). United: 68-24 (+44). Chelsea: 68-24 (+44).

09/10:
Chelsea: 103-32 (+71). United: 86-28 (+56).

10/11:
United: 78-37 (+41)
. Chelsea: 69-33 (+36).

11/12:
City: 93-29 (+64). United: 89-33 (+56).

12/13:
United: 86-43 (+43)
. Chelsea: 75-39 (+36).

13/14:
City: 102-37 (+65). Liverpool: 101-50 (+51). Chelsea: 71-27 (+44). Arsenal: 68-41 (+27). Everton: 61-39 (+22). United: 64-43 (+21).

14/15:
City: 83-38 (+45). Chelsea: 73-32 (+41). Arsenal: 71-36 (+35). United: 62-37 (+25).

15/16:
City: 24-8 (+16). Arsenal: 18-8 (+10). West Ham: 22-13 (+9). Tottenham: 16-8 (+8). United: 15-8 (+7).

08/09: 4-0 WBA, 5-0 Stoke, 5-0 WBA, 5-2 Tottenham
09/10: 5-0 Wigan, 4-1 Portsmouth, 4-0 West Ham, 5-0 Wigan, 5-0 Portsmouth, 4-0 Bolton, 4-0 Stoke
10/11: 7-1 Blackburn, 5-0 Birmingham, 4-0 Wigan
11/12: 8-2 Arsenal, 5-0 Bolton, 4-1 Wolves, 5-0 Fulham, 5-0 Wigan, 5-0 Wolves, 4-0 Wigan
12/13: 4-0 Wigan, 4-0 Wigan, 4-0 Norwich
13/14: 4-1 Swansea, 4-1 Villa, 4-0 Newcastle, 4-0 Norwich
14/15: 4-0 QPR
15/16: Nothing as of yet

Counting only league games where we at least scored 4 goals and the winning margin was at least 3 goals.
This post was made in October...only one 4 goal win in 2 years of LVG

Had a look at our results and we have won by a 2 goal margin 5 times this season. Lost by a 2 goal margin 3 times. Awful

LVG
5 Wins - Liverpool 3-1, Sunderland 3-0, Everton 3–0, West Brom 2-0, Stoke 3-0
3 Losses - Arsenal 0-3, Stoke 0-2, Spurs 0-3

Moyes
12 Wins - Swansea 4-1, Palace 2-0, Fulham 3-1, Villa 3-0, West Ham 3-1, Swansea 2-0, Cardiff 2-0, Palace 2-0, West Brom 3-0, Palace 2-0, Villa 4-1, Newcastle 4-0
5 Losses- City 1-4, Chelsea 1-3, Liverpool 0-3, City 0-3, Everton 0-2

If we are going to get 5 goals in 1 game, it'll be today (against Villa).

In our last game, there were points in the game where it looked to my eyes that we were playing with an extra 1 or 2 men and each attack was purposeful and direct (no back/side passing).
This shows that the system we play can work well and if LVG could achieve this for 75% of our games, I believe we could win the league at a canter.

The problem is that we rarely play with such attacking purpose. Normally, we focus on clean sheets, rather than scoring goals.

If we don't do it today we may do it against Bournemouth. An early goal today could see the floodgates opening

We rarely get 5 shots on target let alone score 5 goals...

I really don't think we do. It is all about the speed and precision of the passes. We play more or less the same way every game. When the passes are going with pace and the movement is good, we unsettle defences and carve up more chances. The problem is for most of the season, that has not been the case which meant the opponent has enough time to be organised and barely ever gets bothered which forces us to pass sideways. The blame is on LvG's inability to coach our players better so the speed of passing and movement improves AND on the relative lack of technical quality and/or pace from our front players.

110 league games since it happened. Even that was a 5-5 draw.
