Great player but not at the kind of numbers being thrown around. The big thing for me as we've seen time and time again is the unproven nature of playing in Prem. Now I know that's pretty applicable of most signings but when your saying 60m plus, it's a massive gamble.....

I can't remember seeing Gomes okay that often. The times I have seen him play make me think 'how is he better than Herrera?' It may be that Valencia were garbage last season, that's why he seemed a bit 7/10. Still, I don't think he's all that.

Griezmann, to my eyes, is a much better player. Griezmann is quicker, more direct, finishes better, and having been drilled by Simeone would be ideal to play on the right in Mou's system.
I have no idea about Andre Gomes. All I know is that he and Griezmann don't play in the same position. So the question of comparison doesn't even arise for me.

Mane is an athlete, he is as fast as they come and a decent finisher at times. That is why he succeeds in the EPL. Greezmann is small and slow, two red flags if you are buying a player for an EPL club. He would be a massive gamble at the fee he would command.
He's not objectively small or slow though.

He's hardly slow.

Christ, you'd think English football was a body building competition.

When players like Coutinho, Silva etc. with small frames and not exactly stellar speed can succeed, Griezmann who is better than both sure as hell can.

See this, I just don't get it. Should big money buys only come from the league you're in? Do that and you're left buying Troy Deeney for £25m, what a superb athlete.

How come nobody says anything when a player moves from another English side to Man Utd/Liverpool etc and can't hack it? The proven in England argument collapses...

He has the same size than Rooney and he is as fast as Rooney ever was. So yeah he isn't small nor slow.
Rooney is 11kg heavier than Greizmann so they are not the same size just because they are the same height. There is no way that he is as fast as a young Rooney either. Rooney still has one of the fastest top speeds in football if you listen to the 'fastest player' stats from various competitions, it is just that he has lost his pace over a short distance.

He has been shite for the last two televised games so obviously he is now an awful player. In reality I would rather have dybala but I don't get people saying he wouldn't suit us, Mourinho loves to play on the counter, just like atleti, and he is at his best like that. He was played both in a different position and in a completely different style of play last night so was just warming up, will be better in the next couple of games.

Time to feck off this idea that only physically powerful players can play in the prem. Maybe that's why we are behind the Spanish teams despite spending loads of money.

At 175cm and 72kgs Griezmann isn't small or light. He has a normal ratio for a professional athlete.

Misleading stat though. While I do not dispute that Rooney was pretty fast having one of the highest top speeds in football means nothing if you can't maintain that top speed for very long. Even worse if it takes a very long time to get to said top speed given that in football acceleration means far more than top speed and how fast you can run 100m.

He is definitely on the small side for an striker or forward in the EPL. OK maybe he has David Silva 'just enough' pace, but I still think he is a gambling if we we to buy him at £80m+.

I don't disagree with that but it was the idea that Greizmann is faster than Rooney ever was. Rooney was rapid when he was younger.

Why for the Premier League? I don't understand how people think the physical requirements are any higher in England than they are for Griezmann in Spain/Europe.

Read my post. I don't say it should but it's a complete lottery if they don't. im still waiting for a big money signing in this league to come off for any of the teams....

That's a lottery no matter what, I'm not even sure that the internal market has a higher success rate.

Am I the only one who thought he played not bad in the first half? Hit the post and nearly scored another. His movement caused Romania problems, sadly for him he has Giroud next to him and as mentioned above the midfield(bar Kante and Payet) were poor. Long balls ain't going to suit him, if better creative passes were made he would have been in one on one a couple of times.

I said the same but FM 2016 brigade went on over drive and slated my posts, looks like we dodged a bullet here, he's average at best and no better that what we have
I hope that you were joking. If not, you have hardly seen him play. If you have and still hold that opinion, then your opinion is not worth the number of times you hit the keypad to type in that post. Take your pick.

Rooney was never rapid but did have enough of a burst of pace that he now lacks hence the reason he struggles to take players on nowadays. Greizmann would be a good buy he's a cross between Herrera and Mata for me with added pace than either.

Yeah. Now it'll be "he just needed a year to settle in", which is a fine and reasonable point, until you remember the same people probably preferred Schneiderlin over a player from outside the league because he'd hit the ground running...

Pretty much, although my opinion is that he is not someone that makes a difference in a team playing against a packed defense. His game is best suited to a counter attacking team and he is not someone that wins a game through an outrageous dribbling to open up a defense. That is not really his forte. He can be taken out of a game quite easily.
His greatest asset are his movement and finishing which is quite difficult to use against a packed defense.
Have you heard of or seen Thomas Muller? People will kill to have him in the team and his best qualities are his finishing and movement.

Or Delph, he was good with Aston Villa but he isn't good enough for City. I think that the player tactical, mental and technical characteristics are more important than the league he is playing in.

Gomes and Griezmann can both play number 10. Maybe that's why?

If its a straight choice about who to invest in I'd say Griezmann.

Physical attributes are more important in England than in Spain. The Spanish game is more technical and in training there is more focus on closing down space and passing whereas in England there is a faster more attacking flow to the game. I take it that you do watch football?

You're blinded by the media, there's no hope for you.

There are of course differences between football in England and Spain, but the need for athleticism is no greater in England than in Spain. How come English sides don't overpower Spanish sides physically when they paid off?

Last night was probably one of the few times (maybe even the first time) that Griezmann has played as a SS for France. On a night where france didnt create many chances for their strikers esp in the first half its unfair to be overcritical of him or Giroud (who's being spared only because the goalkeeper messed up).

The performance last night was collectively a bad one. Making Griezmann a scapegoat (or any other player) is not correct. Deschamps needed to stretch Romania's defense instead of playing it so narrow and when he did that with Coman it helped France's overall game. It was a mix of tactics, nerves and maybe a lack of connection with team mates. If Messi and Ronaldo can underperform for their countries and not be called overrated by people on this forum then why is Griezmann being called that?

Yes, hes a striker and not a wide forward like Ronaldo in his prime. Hes not going to breeze past a couple of players on a regular basis like Martial does for us. But he can score goals and his link up play and vision are great. Everyone is allowed an off night. Doesnt make you bad at your job or overrated.

It's a lost battle, the toughest side I have ever seen was Osasuna when Azpi was a young'un.

I am not blinded by the media. I have heard countless players say it. The game is increasingly becoming less and less physical, it is partly why we have seen Spain dominate the game in the last ten years.

The differences?

From A Spanish perspective

César Azpilicueta

"The pace!" he says, wide-eyed. "French football is almost half-way between the two, but England is completely different to Spain: so much more physical, so much quicker. You notice in the second half especially – at times the game goes mad and you can hardly keep up, hardly breathe."

From an Italian Perspective

Matteo Darmian

“It’s more physical and less tactical, all of the teams play stronger, but I try to adapt to this type of game and this type of football.

From a French perspective

Anthony Martial

"The Premier League is more physically demanding than Ligue 1. I love English football, it's the best in the world in my opinion, and I hope to stay here for many years to come,"

From an Argentinian Perspective

Demichelis

“It’s obvious that the Premier League is the hardest because of how the referees allow a lot more physical contact, trying to work out the good intentions of a player when he’s trying to get the ball and not cause an injury,”

“It seems that rugby is closely related to football here. They like this game of knocks, of aggressiveness,

Need I go on?

3 anecdotes are not proof. Go ask the players who started against Athletic Club when they wiped the floor with you physically, or ask Carrick when he looked like a mug at international and club level against supposed non-athletic midfielders. Tell any player who's recently joined Atlético that they'd have a tougher time physically in England than under Simeone and you'd be laughed out of the room.

Anecdotes are useless here, there's so many conflicting ones about.

In Spain there are some sides who's physicality causes everyone else a problem, same happens in England. Every team needs some athleticism, but players who are slow and/or weak can still be accommodated.

They are more like testimonies than anecdotes are they not? These players have experience of playing in the the different leagues and I could go on finding countless more quotes like that but I can't be bothered proving a fact that you have no interest in ever accepting.

Use whatever word you word but there's conflicting testimonies/anecdotes either way. You can name players that suggest England is more physical, I can point to players looking like weak little boys in Spain (Cesc...).

There's absolutely no way you can convince me it's any more difficult for a slow/weak player to adapt in England than elsewhere, you are right about that part.
