During the last summer transfer window we found it hard to fathom why one of the world's biggest football clubs didn't match Antoine Griezmann's €80m buyout clause and see if they could persuade him to join them. The will of the player would have been key, but it was surely worth a try.
Nobody did.
Since then Griezmann has repeatedly shown why he would have been a great purchase. Many of Atletico Madrid's players are stronger within the collective than outside of it, but Griezmann works on the edges of Diego Simeone's system and isn't as controlled within it as teammates. He's the outlet, the genuine class who often makes the difference, and did again against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.
Therefore, it'll be at least a little encouraging for Manchester United supporters to hear El Confidencial's claims on Wednesday. They state that Manchester United are 'willing to pay whatever it takes' to sign Antoine Griezmann.
Of course, his transfer fee is €80m, but El Confidencial seem to be suggesting it's personal terms which would see Manchester United throw money around until the Frenchman gave in.
A possible Champions League winning star this month, and every chance to be a Euro 2016 star next month, Griezmann's €80m clause is starting to look like a bargain.
