What on God's green earth were you smoking when you replied to this? Me saying lvg was more or less forced to play Rashford and you reply with a team sheet from 2013
We had no fit senior CMs available (Carrick had to play CB). Yet Ferguson kept Pogba on the bench (unused sub), didn't call up anyone else, and played Rafael and Park in CM. We lost.
LvG if he had the same cautious streak could have pushed a defender or midfielder upfront. Depay played that day IIRC.

I've really warmed to LvG since he was sacked. Now that the pressure and frustration have been removed, I'd say he did a pretty good job with the young players, which mildly offsets his tumescent backpassing possession over success antics and formation meddling in year one and flaccid attacking for much of year two.

Two postivies of his time at the club for me:
1) Progression of Smalling since has been there. He has been a captain at times and is (bar the last month or so) finally looking like a proper defender at last. We have been waiting an eternity for JOnes and/or Smalling to show there potential. Under LVG Smalling has finally started to.
2) Bringing through youngsters. Read so much crap on here about him purposely leaving out Januzaj and Perriera purposely as already known....what utter nonsense. From having his hand forced and a bit of luck, such as Rashford being used when Martial was injured he has come up trumps with youngsters such as Bothwick Johnson, Rashford, Lindegaard, Mensah to name a few. He has been superb in this regard, shame about his "philosphies" and bar Martial and Mensah I think in the long term, pretty awful signings. He never really semed to understand the club to me, nor really did we understand him.

He failed in his time here and had to go. In 5 years though we will probably be saying "Well it was LVG that signed Mensah, Shaw and Martial"

I had never been to a cup final before this year's, the fact he got us there (somehow) and won it, I can only be thankful for that. I was pleased for him, you could see his delight at winning it too. Rightly or wrongly, he's been taking stick (particularly from the media) for months.
Introducing us to the likes of Rashford and TFM, also has been good.

That all said, the games under LVG have been very hard to watch. It was the right decision to sack him, but an FA cup was a great leaving present, so not all bad.

Manchester United 2-3 Blackburn Rovers
Carrick and Jones at CB, Rafael and Park at CM, Pogba on the bench. (with Anderson)
  • 01 De Gea
  • 03 Evra
  • 04 Jones
  • 21 Rafael (Keane - 85' )
  • 13 Park Ji-sung
  • 16 Carrick Booked
  • 17 Nani Booked
  • 25 Valencia
  • 09 Berbatov
  • 14 Hernandez (Anderson - 46' )
  • 19 Welbeck

I hate being reminded of this game, every man and his dog were frustrated Pogba was on the bench for this game. The feeling in the ground was Sir Alex lost him during this match, and so it proved true.

Really? People thought we lost Pogba during that match at that moment? Always thought it was more of a hindsight thing.

Of course it was that game, he even refers to it himself in interviews. It was around the time he was being linked to other clubs and I for one was pretty shocked to see a full back get in the midfield ahead of him.

I know he refers to it, and we do as well while discussing him. But I don't remember for some reason if during that match we collectively thought, uh oh we've lost Pogba. Fair enough if it was he case.

Well a fair few around where I used to sit were concerned he was lost that day, that was the general discussion on the day of the match.

So, he said he'd retire from management after his three year stint at Utd. Sacked before the final year, has he retired anyway?

I'd love to see him manage a team like Southampton for a couple of seasons before he says goodbye.

Probably.

We'll have paid his final year of his contract anyway. I can't see him wanting to come back to England and deal with the English media unless he needs the money, and I doubt he will after being our manager.

Before LVG came to United I never knew a coach 'took credit' for buying players or giving players debuts, like it wasn't part of his job. All of a sudden he became responsible for clubs successes after he leaves, successes he never seems able to accomplish when he's actually there. Some are even praising him for Smalling's improvement last season ffs. I look forward to people still praising him for the 'foundations' he left here 5 years from now, as long as Martial or Rashford are involved in the team.

He said it before but I haven't read anywhere about him calling it time after the sack. Just that he's on a holiday.

If I was him, I wouldn't want to be sacked at the end of such an illustrious career. He should just go back to Ajax for one more league title before moving into director's role.

Still, would love him to see in the PL, he's such a character.

I cant overly criticize him. Yes the football was dire last season, and yes he had to go due to results and performances not being good enough. However, as a man he was always honest, up front and had agreat dignity. Thank you for bringing through some youngsters, and thank you for the FA cup

I wish him well in his life, whether he retires or whether he goes on to manage somewhere else.

He'll win it with them probably.
Like Falcao was going to somehow become the best striker in the league?
And now LVG will go on to become one of the best managers in the World?
LVG is a dinosaur. His ideas don't work in the EPL, in the Europa League or in the CL. That much is certain.
He did fantastic work with Ajax 20 years ago...I'll give him that.

I think he'll be more suited to the Italian league, and I wish him all the best. I quite like the man; he was honest and passionate and his heart was in the right place. His methods just weren't working for us and it's a shame, but we all move on. No hard feelings.

I dont dislike him now that he isnt our manager anymore.
I will forever think of him as a dickhead tho.
I wish him a nice retirement and would happily chat with him over a drink should we ever meet, but thank God, Jebus, X Men, and Weaste he's gone.

I don't know who it worked out worse for to be honest, he was never the right fit. He definitely improved us from Moyes but that's like saying Aldi is better than Iceland...neither is anywhere near good enough.

VG pre United: world class coach, consistent success across European leagues. Controversial but very good record and excellent with national team.
VG post United: finished

He almost won the CL only a few years ago.

The more I watch England playing and listen to the pundits, the clearer it becomes that allthough in his 60's, the English aren't ready for such modern idea's yet. Or maybe it's not even a question of time, but is thinking and playing football at the same time not something the English will ever learn.
