How is Rooney still in our first 11?

Alright, I see... To counter Guardiola's, Mourinho's tactical innovation will be something around Ibra dropping deeper on Rooney's space, Rooney dropping deeper on Pogba's space... Like a choo-choo train going slowly backwards. Who else could drop deeper? ;)
Eventually when Rooney can barley walk he will be dropped deep enough so that DDG can benefit...

The point is that everyone else did even worse! The answer to this thread is very simple: even last year, Rooney was better than most of our players.

Does anyone remember all these discussions about Tony V? How terrible he is? The comparisons with Rafael? Why does the manager still play Tony? We had dozens of those threads!

Well... the hatters better prepare themselves for Rooney's new 5-year contract! Such news might be devastating for some sensitive souls!

What fecking nonsense is this?!?

It is total bullshit to count how many goals players scored against "strong" or "weak" opposition. It means nothing! If we had won one more game against "weak" opposition... no... correct that, if we had just won one more point against "weak" opposition, then we'd be in CL. We'd enjoy watching our team play against the best teams in Europe instead of watching them play against dross on Thursdays. We only needed one more goal against "weak" opposition... but none of our players was capable of providing that. Perhaps it's not as easy as some people believe. Perhaps it's not easy to score 246 goals.
Wow, moving goal posts here are we? You were the one who used stats from last season as an argument for him playing well, those stats got picked apart, and apparently that's "bullshit"

No one suggested it's Rooneys fault alone we did not get top four. But he has not delivered the goods for a long time now. Personally i believe his undroppable status under Van Gaal made him apathetic and him being dropped and having to actually perform to get into the team would do him good.

If this is actually his best, then hes done as a top flight player

Rooney scored 15 last year and he wasn't playing as a striker. Except for Martial who scored 17, why didn't any of the other players score over 15 ... since they are all better than Rooney?
Where was he playing until February then? He scored 8 league goals last season. 6 of them were in the 18 games he played up front. Rashford had a better scoring rate and nobody else played up front.

Seems he sees things the rest of us don't. Martial and Rashford scored just as many as Rooney in the second half of the season (6), Rooney scored a massive 2 in the first part of the season when he was the main striker. Pretty sure people performed better than Rooney in the first half of the season.

We actually played better as a team when Rooney did not play. It is telling that since 2007 he has won player of the month once and that was in 2010. He hasn't won it since. When you compare that to the period 2005-2007 when he was regular, either everyone has caught up with him or he has dropped in standards. I think it is largely due to his injury he has never got back to his high standards. Time to play players who get the team working rather than playing players on reputation.

Rooney has been over as a top tier player years ago, the only reason we havent let him go is because we didnt have other stars who were as recognizable at that level.
Now that we have Zlatan & Pogba Rooneys days as a MUFC player is finally coming to an end and good riddance to him. He does nothing on the pitch anymore to warrant the salary he is getting.

I get so irritated when I see him play for United, he can barely trap or pass a ball and he looks as he is running in quicksand. The amount of moves that break down due to Rooney's poor touch and wayward passing is staggering.

I liken the situation to a Sunday league cricket team captain. :boring:

There's a bowler who is being hit for a few runs, not bowling very well, but then he picks up a wicket...;)

The Captain therefore says, ok Wayne, one more over.

More runs are taken from poor bowling, but then last ball of the over, he picks up another wicket..

"Ok Wayne, one more over then". etc etc etc

Am sure you get my drift. Rooney keeps scoring goals when he personally needs them most, thus deflecting from his poor performances.

It will be interesting how he's struggles - if they continue - affect the team. Morale would be worth examining considering just how popular Wayne is with his team mates, they just adore the guy.

I can't decide if he's been good, or is it just the improvement on last week's disgraceful performance that's making it look good

He's looked comfortably the least dangerous out of the front 5 if we include Pogba.

People aren't used to Friday night football just yet I think. Not everyone can make it to the game from work.
Who the feck works till 8pm on Friday in Manchester? Or if they had a season ticket, who could not sell or give their seat for this match when it'd pogs, zlatan and Mous first competitive match at ot? Should be packed, no excuse.

Him and Martial are probably the least threatening of the forward players so far but Rooney is playing much better tonight.

He's been decent today actually, but unfortunately decent is the best we can expect nowadays.

I'm disappointed it's not packed just as you are. I'm just stating why I think there are empty seats, I can't think of any other reason for it.

I'm surprised he didn't make a cuppa tea with the time Southampton gave him to cross for the goal.

No, but I also know if you have a season ticket you sell the seat for the match if you can't make it. Don't ask a silly question like that. I'm on Friday night isn't exactly hard to get to for most people dude

Do you work part time? it's really not that easy to make a Friday night game, if you live outside of Manchester then you're fecked. You'll find at first it'll be the same for most teams playing Friday, it'll get better though.

It's a little rich from someone who is not at the game themselves...

Mate, I lived in Manchester for 10 years before relocating. I've seen my fair share of games and done my bit. But even if I hadn't have done that, I can still have an opinion on why OT shouldn't be having empty seats on a night like tonight. Get off your high horse will ya!

My point is simply if you can't make the game and you have a Ticket, give or sell it to a mate etc.

There's no excuse for empty seats tonight. Do you not get that?

 i think youve got our roles reversed son. 'everyone should be as commited as I was, even though I'm not at the game tonight.'

Now quit whinging like a school girl and we can let this thread get back on track.

Talk again when you're sober so you can understand my point
I can understand your point, doesn't mean you aren't talking absolute bollocks, get your arse on a seat before you criticise others for not doing the same.

Like you said, let's drop this and talk about Rooney here. Enjoy
Cunning Mourinho is trying to burn him out, isn't he?!
Or he knows wayne needs full matches to get fitter and the others don't as much and he needs the whole squad in order to cope with the UEFA cup. Many a mystery I guess.

Horrible horrible performance. He absolutely stinks the place up he really does.

Yes he chipped the ball into the box and Ibra turned it into a goal, fantastic.

90 mins of jogging around the pitch at half speed, doing sod all. Without him we are such a more dynamic squad.
