He's simply not a very good player. He's shite at defending and his so called passing ability leaves a lot to be desired.

He's talented, I like his confidence in his ability on the ball, however he really needs to improve his decision making.

Having a poor game.

His passing ability should be an asset but instead he just invites pressure with sideways passes across his own 18 yard box. Rarely is he finding a pass into midfield or the forwards

You don't understand guys. He's simply playing football too advanced for the England team. He is going to be a complete defender.

Viva la Pep Revólucion! lol

What i find it funny is how everyone is so obsessed with Stones and his partner in Man City is even worse then him! Ok, i get it, Stones price tag is what it is but Otamendi was bought for 32m as well, should be at peak of his powers at the age of 28 compared to Stones who just started and nobody ever mentions Otamendi even though the guy is pathetic. Awful positioning, decision making non existent but i guess people are blinded with his last ditch defending and the funniest thing is, he only makes those because he is so easily dragged out of his position.

He seems to have avoided media criticism. Easy to forget he cost £50m.

I'm honestly not exaggerating, every time I've watched him this season he has given away a clear chance.

Seen him cost city a few goals this season, and that's in a team setup to keep the ball but this England performance tonight is one of the worst i've seen from a CB. He seems to have it in his head he's some kind of pirlo-esque defender. Complete liability. He's been taking 2-3 touches when an attacker is within 2 yards of him, playing awful passes, losing possession and constantly putting his team under pressure in dangerous situations.

What's annoying is the english commentators/media just totally ignore these mistakes, they don't even get a mention.

Otamendi has had a good season so far, he's far better than Stones.

There's a difference between being good on the ball and refusing to kick the ball long or out of play. He's never impressed me with his passing.

That moment in the first half when he let his man have a free header and then threw his arms around in anger as if it was somebody else's error. Baffling.

All the positional awareness of a traffic cone. Really shows the lack of true CB talent in England when this guy is being hailed as some sort of special talent.

Isn't that just because he's not a complete shithouse with the ball?
Yeah, reckon some of the hype comes from his above average skills on the ball. But his skill on the ball really isn't all that special, it is just out of the norm for most modern day English CB's. You'll find plenty of CB's and talents around outside of England matching or surpassing him in this aspect. Doesn't help that his decision making is shit, so often his forward pass will become a suicide pass.

I've seen as much skill on the ball from Bailly for example, but still he isn't lauded as some supreme ball playing CB. He is just at the level expected for a top CB talent.

For some weird reason when he messes up and they show his face I can't help but feel sorry for him. I think I'm broken.

Otamendi has been much better this season, to be fair. He still has those problems, but certainly not to the extent he had at last season.

While I believe they paid way too much for him (some would argue we did Pogba) - I just don't understand the stick he gets on here. He seems to have a working body which is a huge improvment over Phil Jones who gets papercuts from opening paychecks. Give me a 50m Stones over Phil "accident prone" Jones.

Who's comparing him to Phil Jones? Just you?
