I wouldn't make any prediction. We have seen it's not completely true the big teams usually win against the weakest oppisitions.
If we can't put away Hull, Leicester, Watford, Bournemouth, Middlesbrough, West Brom, Sunderland, Burnley and Swansea, I'd personally have no complaints about not playing CL next season. We lost too many games of that nature last year and deservedly aren't playing CL this year.

Do you still hope to win the league?
Well any fan of the current top 6 should at least "hope" to win the league. Yes its a distant dream but like I said any team in 2nd within 9 or so points can at least try to make a chase of it. Chelsea would have drawn at Liverpool and lost at home to Arsenal for my scenario to play out.....nothing to suggest that wouldn't impact them.

I am still a newbie so can't create a thread but I have to STRONGLY make this point

The belief that "A team that is not in Europe does better/challenges for the league" is absolute bollocks. It is nothing but an excuse. Apart from the crazy Leicester season last year and maybe when Brendan Rodgers Liverpool almost won the league, I do not think there is any other example that can actually support this assertion.

The teams that consistently and continually challenge for the league are the same teams that are in Europe. How many seasons were Liverpool or even Spurs not in Europe yet didn't launch a title challenge? The season that United were not in Europe, the club did not challenge for the league.

If it held even remotely true, wouldn't we not see more teams who are not in Europe pushing the top 4?

I have no idea where this came from actually. If anything, playing more games means that your squad is sharper, more match fit and the fringe players are just as hungry because they know they will have opportunities to play.

I have seen many people claim that Chelsea are doing well because "they are not in Europe". But surely how can that be the case? Look at Chelsea's history the last 10 years. They have performed well in the league and Europe at the same time (except for last season).

Does anyone seriously think that Leicester are not doing well this season because of their "commitments to Europe"?

I would like anyone to challenge this. My point is that there is no clear relation (if any at all) to not being in Europe and performing better in a league.
Look at the top 4 teams over the last 10 years and please explain to me how that assertion can possibly be true

So you have given us 2 examples from the last 3 years. Surely there can be 4 from 4 if Chelsea and Pool finish 1st and 2nd this season.

I would love it, too. The problem is our awful record at the Bridge.

yep I didn't say I'd put my house on it. I'd take a draw between you both as well I'm guessing you'd take that now. They head to Burnley after which is probably one of the hardest places to go this season. Lost only twice to City and you I think. This idea its done and dusted I just don't understand on the first of Feb. Its no where near close to that yet. We have thrown 8 point leads with 5 games left I'm sure I recall.

Oh yeah, a draw would be welcomed with open arms. The fact is that they have Conte, someone who is not gonna let the title slip away.

Those teams who compete in the Europa League(in the top leagues) are not really expected to win the league. I checked every recent Europa League winner and compared their position in the League the year they won the Europa to the previous season
--------------------------------Position in EL winning season---Position in previous season
15/16 Sevilla------------------------7th-------------------------------5th
14/15 Sevilla------------------------5th-------------------------------5th
13/14 Sevilla------------------------5th-------------------------------9th
12/13 Chelsea-----------------------3rd-------------------------------6th
11/12 AT. Madrid--------------------5th--------------------------------7th
10/11 Porto--------------------------1st--------------------------------3rd

Only Sevilla have moved back in the league(14/15-15/16) while competing in the EL.
Now I'm sure it'll take its toll if you are competing for the League, but at the moment United are not. Going far in the Europa League and top 4 should not be that much of a problem in my opinion

I've had you nailed on for top 4 all season, but 2nd is probably optimistic. It'd require a lot of teams to completely go to peices, which seems a pretty big ask.
I meant 2nd in the coming weeks due to the other 3 playing each other and mancity form not so great. Not that we will finish 2nd but the mentality of the players and fans could completely change.

@Logical Fan Cups are a distraction indeed: you can't train and prepare properly for the weekend, midweek travels are a burden and abroad they are more, cup games against lesser sides are often gruelling because of oppo's big motivations, injuries and tiredness are very often a side effect, fans are not happy if you don't win, media sh*tstorms are an unwelcome companion more often than not. I can't really see your point: all midweek matches put a weight on a team fighting for the league and the fans of the biggest clubs only feel rewarded at SF or Final level in April or May.
Ok. Follow my logic based of what you've just posted. If what you say is true, than the teams that DO NOT have cup distractions should be able to better prepare for the 1 league game and therefore do better in a 38-game league than the team that plays an additional 15-20 games due to the cup/european distractions.
HOWEVER, when you analyze the teams that have finished top 4 in the league over the last 10/15 years, it is the teams that play the most games across a season that are almost always in the top 4 regardless
In theory, your argument may seem sound. But in reality, there is no basis.
Those are my 3 maximum posts for the day.

It's done. I probably said this like 3 times in this thread but after an opportunity like that this week, to then draw 0-0 at home to Hull? No fecking chance.

You guys have dropped so many points against shit oppositions. And Hull can take something out from Liverpool's game.

We don't deserve it and haven't all season. Time and time again we get the opportunity to capitalise but we feck up. Terrible mentality and not enough goals.

It's over for me, it's time to throw every egg in the Europa league basket.

After tonight I'd say it's done, we looked like a team low on confidence despite losing once in nineteen games. Simply not good enough from a squad that contains so much talent.

We all went on about how the teams above us were facing each other for the next 3 games while we got relatively simple games to go.

We've drawn 2 so far.

I love this forum and i dont want to get banned or anything but United won't be getting 4th, it just won't happen after that Hull draw. I actually watched the game and someone as clinical as Mata missing that opportunity just highlighted that it's not meant to be in the league. If you guys focused on the Europa league you could win it, that's the best option imo.

It was always going to be an uphill battle after our poor form earlier in the season. Still in the race (although unlikely to get it) but after we'd won six in a row it was inevitable we'd hit some poor form again and the gap would be extended again. We don't score enough goals not to draw quite often, annoyingly.

We're not good enough for top four. Simple as. Unfortunate, but the harsh reality. Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool are all better than us. Arsenal and City have been luckier and more clinical.

Didn't expect Mourinho to come in and make us title winners but at the very least expected him to improve us. He hasn't really done that in results, although performances have been much better. His treatment of some of our players is hard to defend though, even if I might have attempted to do so in the past. His treatment of Mkhi and Martial, in particular, has probably cost us a few points in the race for top four.

However, I don't blame Mourinho fully. At the end of the day, this team should be challenging for top four. We're not. Everyone at the club, from manager and coaching staff to the players need to have their heads given a good wobble.

Great midweek for City, couple more of those please. When Zlatan doesn't score it seems you guys really, really struggle for goals, just 33 in 23 games. A full 12 behind the lowest in the top 5. Your definately not out of the top 4 battle though, lots of over reactions.

Standard us.

We're the biggest bunch of 'bottlers' in the top 6. We'd fold quicker than Arsenal if this squad ever found itself in a title race.

Much as people will be crying at the moment, of course we can still make the top 4, it's a mere 4 points away.

Just waiting for @TheReligion, @Peanut Butter, @Kraftwerker, @Robbie Boy and a whole host of guest stars to educate me that a draw against Hull is so much better than a draw against Chelsea.

Kraftwerker maybe another comic strip to help me understand. Eh? :wenger:
You're right to rub it in. For a team that has been and will be stranded in 6th, we've got some ballsy fans to giving it out to teams above us.

Have said we won't get top four from the beginning of season and the team week in week out since have done nothing to make me think otherwise. Not good enough and our finishing is utter shit.

You can't draw at home against the likes of Hull, Burnley, stoke and west ham and still hope to get top 4. Pretty sure we have the worst home record of anyone in the top half of the table which is shocking to say the least. Any hopes for this are gone. Hell, it might all be pretty close come the last 4 games of the season, but I fully expect us to get like 5 points in those last 4 games so the only way we get top 4 is if we get a healthy lead going in to the last 4 games. Which isn't happening.

We need about 8 players in the summer to even bother with the CL.

We would just be cannon fodder like the rest of the PL teams.

I'm absolutely fuming. Feels like a loss.

We will finish 5th at best, but I don't even think we're good enough to achieve that.

The feck? Why would it be? Shambles tonight.
I still think Utd will make top 4. Ironic that Wenger's last season will actually be the one they finally don't qualify for CL. Also think Spurs will miss out when Europe restarts.
