You mentioned 2 players, both wingers, who are barely better - if at all - from a list of 8 clubs; as proof that he is the 15th best no.10 in the league, and an atrocious wide player.

Even the club you mentioned, Stoke, started with a 35 year old Peter Crouch up front. And you're saying that Rooney is worse than that?
If you think I have the time/inclination to list every forward better than Rooney*then you are sorely mistaken.

Its a long list

I figured you had it prepared already, given the rankings you gave him earlier. I'd be shocked to discover you pulled that from your arse.

That's a fecking embarrassing post.

So as a 10 or inside left forward he wouldn't get into West Brom, Stoke, Bournemouth, Swansea, West Ham, Southampton, Burnley, Watford teams?

Christ on a bike. He's a fraction of the player he once was, but he'd walk into any of those teams. He's still got plenty of quality.
It has to do with Rooney's mental and physical situation at the moment. That will decide if he can still do it or not. I think Rio Ferdinand said it best:

[Source:http://www.express.co.uk/sport/foot...yne-Rooney-has-body-a-40-year-old-News-Gossip]

"He is 31 years old but he has probably got the mileage of a 36-year-old with what he has done in his career and the velocity that he plays at, the scrutiny and the pressure," said Ferdinand. "In fact, he is probably in a 40-year-old athlete's body.

"Most of those games he has played, especially the first 13 years, his stats showed he had probably out-run everybody in the team - as he was always telling us!

"The big thing for Wayne Rooney has been to get through that barrier of 250 goals for Manchester United. That is a lot of pressure. People were always talking about it. Every time he was asked about it and was thinking about it in the back of his mind.

"Getting there might just release a fresher Wayne Rooney. But you cannot get away from when your body is telling you one thing. Wayne Rooney is the only person who will know it is over."

"Cristiano had an absolute desire to be the best individual in the world," said Ferdinand. "No two ways about it, no grey areas. 'I will become the best, through preparation, determination, single-mindedness and desire'.

"Wayne Rooney would always say, 'I want to be the best player in the world but I will do it by being a team player'.

"His first thought always was that he would sacrifice his game for the team."[/

Surprised by those Rio comments, I mean the content is nothing out of the ordinary but coming from an ex player it sounds even a little brutal, 40 year old athletes body is a bit strong.

Cannot imagine a quick January sale at all. I think he will leave with a lot more pomp and ceremony than that. Its wayne fecking rooney.

Well it's not meant to be negative. He just means that Rooney's been unselfish and that his given everything to the club and teammates. Instead of thinking of himself during the games, he did more of what was needed - other players in the team benefitted from his work rate. It's strenuous to play the style that Rooney did especially during such a long period.

I agree that he won't leave yet. He still wants to contribute to win titles. Besides, the Chinese transfer window closes at the end of this month. Mourinho will still need all the players he has, given the fact that there can be at most 28 more matches.

I get its a compliment but its damning in terms of going forward to say he is in that state physically.

He is our third choice LW, third choice 10 and second choice 9 under mourinho, that versatility is pretty important, it could be the summer though.

Exactly he'd walk into these teams not run and herein lies the problem as to why he is finished at the highest level.

Not going anywhere for now and I recon he'll either end his career here. The Lampard and Gerrard experiment of playing in US wasn't exactly a success and why would Rooney take his young family to China for a season. It's not like he needs the money. I think he'll retire and look to a coaching role here.

That would mean retiring at 32 or 33.
Seems a little early

Not a chance. He still wants regular football. He won't get it here.

Maybe but I just don't see him playing for another team as it will tarnish his achievements this season. The only other option would be returning to Everton to end his career but I don't see that either. Teams 'project' don't have the same sentiment as years gone by.

How does playing for another team tarnish his achievements? He's our record scorer. No one will ever deny him that.

Not had regular football for a while for one reason or another. Remember a bloke called John Terry at Chelsea? Rooneys no different and they just fade into the background. Just the start of the season, big news Rooneys dropped....and now absolutely nothing when he's on the bench. He could easily finish his career here like others before him. I'm convinced he's not gonna tarnish his achievements at this club by playing in another shirt for a season....

Terry at 31 was still one of the best defenders in England..

It would in no way tarnish his achievements. He's not a one club man anyway ,like John Terry is, so I don't see why you would think that.

It's incredibly unlikely he gets another contract here and I think his current one runs out in 2018 or 2019 I'm not sure. Like I said I can't see him retiring from football that early. He'd only be 32/33.

No one denying him anything....Some professional sports people would sooner be remembered finishing at the top and remembered for that as oppose to having that memory tainted by extending your career playing meaningless league for a year.

That's not my point. My point is John Terry was the highest profile player for years...Mr Chelsea. He's still there with little to no colum inches about him not playing. No conversation about his influence on players or the changing room. Nothing to suggest he's going to US or China. IMO he'll retire at Chelsea and Rooney will be the same.

I know Rooney is an emotive subject and most for some reason would sooner him be sold than be here but his achievements at the club means like others, he'll be the person to decide his future here.

Like I said some professionals like to be remembered finishing their careers at the top. Sometimes when you don't, the lasting memory is not what you achieved but how you've finished. Tarnish doesn't mean take away but for example Ince turning out in a Liverpool shirt, it can't be denied didn't tarnish his achievements here!!

Most players retire at 33 anyway, it's just from top level football and to play for example in US or the likes of Turkey or Far East. Also it's well documented that given he's been playing at the top level since 16'ish, it's questionable whether his body will allow him to play much longer anyway....

Not going to happen.

He has already said he wants to finish his England career at the next world cup. He won't go if he hardly plays at United.
Southgate has already shown that he is not afraid to drop him.
Imo, he should give up on that world cup dream. It will just end in tears. It always does.

Nah I do not really buy into this idea. Truth is most players of quality play beyond their optimum sell by date. Its only natural when you think about it. After all their whole life is football and the rewards and adulation it brings. Maybe with an odd supporter the example you give of Ince might occur but it will be the exception rather than the rule. For example Charlton and Laws achievements were not tarnished when they moved on. Neither are Scholes or Giggs thought any less of for playing the odd year too many. And they are only 4 players straight off the top of my head. The actual list would go on and on.

I don't buy into that theory, if he is a professional he would like to end his career playing football not on the bench or in the stands. Ending your career as a squad player at a top club should not be equated with ending it at the top and we should be a long way before thinking of Rooney and retirement (at least three seasons).
Then there is the small matter of his wages which will create problems when negotiating contract extensions for key players, imagine Mkhitaryan earning a fraction of what Rooney earns whilst the latter sits on the bench! Its just not sustainable.

Much rather he leaves in the Summer

We need every player we have to get CL football and fight for the cups

However, if it's now or never (never being when his contract ends) then i choose now

I hear you but I don't see it. I think we are into a different cycle of football and where everyone looked to the US project, that proved to nothing like the experience I'm guessing they'd thought it would be. I disagree with the Ince issue as I do think his career in signing for Liverpool did tarnish his time here. I guess time will tell....

Yeah we've really benefitted from his experience and excelled under his captaincy. The squad has kept together and fought hard thanks to him under the previous two managers.

He'd be no loss, in fact I think we'd see others grow into the space he leaves.

I couldn't care less at this point. Mourinho's played a blinder and he's an absolute nobody in the squad at this point. Zlatan is the natural leader, Pogba is the posterboy.

If he's happy to be a squad player and him being there isn't holding up getting another player in due to wages etc then I don't see the problem. He's already shown that despite playing poorly he can still make things happen. My biggest gripe around him atm is Mou's preference to play him up top over Rashford and that's not Rooney's fault. But if he's happy to accept a squad role then I think he's still a good option to have in the squad.

Rooney would be miles ahead of anyone in that league, his movement, positioning and game intelligence would make him superb for any MLS team. Rooney is still a good player, he's just lost a step in every aspect and can't compete at the top level anymore. But for a second or third tier league, he'd be immense. His work rate is still top notch too.

It's also a myth that he's slow now. He's still got a decent turn of pace. He just isn't electric and explosive like he used to be; which is unfortunately what his game was built around.

It's a shame a lot of the nonsense spouted about Wayne in here. He's been a completely brilliant player for us. It's not his fault Moyes gave him a preposterous contract. That's really his only crime. If he was earning 100k a week, I'd be happy for him to stick around for another couple of years, because our squad is desperately short on experience.

People vastly underestimate the value of experience, and a winning mentality. Rooney and Carrick are the last of Fergie's bunch that won it all with us, and know what it means to be champions on every level. As it is, his massive salary and low output means he'll almost certainly be moved on. Which is fine, I just wish we could stop with all the negative hyperbole about his decline. fecking match day threads are the worst. He's a bigger scape goat than Fellaini at this point.

Look. Rooney has been a fantastic player for United. The goal scoring record alone is a remarkable status to have achieved. He's won everything he can with United.

It's not a myth that he's slow. Look at his performances and contributions this year alone. Sure he has a spark of energy every now and again but he doesn't have what it takes to start and play a lot of minutes with United and he certainly won't have what it takes to play a lot of minutes in MLS. I don't watch MLS on a regular basis but what I do see is a lot of energy and fast paced football most of the time. Yes, you can say it's a mickey mouse league because of the quality but where quality is missing it's replaced with energy and younger athletes. The only way Rooney would be immense in MLS is if MLS abolished the offside rule and he parked himself in front of goal for 90 minutes. I've had my opinions about him since the first time he created a fuss under Sir Alex. Back then I thought Fergie should have cut him loose at the time but he proved everyone wrong and put in a few more good seasons and broke the scoring record. Moyes gave him a fat contract which was a mistake. LVG made him captain and stuck by him when he was shit. It's been a downward spiral and continues to be. It's time to move on. I'd hate to see him go to China or MLS but if he wants one last payday China is his best bet.

I'm going to assume that you don't follow the MLS much to come out with such a statement. Just because it's MLS, it doesn't make it a league full of handicaps. They have players like Bradley, Giovinco, Villa, Dose Santos, Kaka and more recently Keane who just retired. Your overestimating of Rooney is just because of reputation. It may not be the most technical team but the physical levels fitness wise is not a joke. If Rooney joins the MLS or China, he will not be the best player in either league, not even top 3.

I think initially he would get into the starting XI, for some of the lower teams. However, if he plays for them like he does for us, he'll end up benched.

The truth is that Rooney just isn't good enough to play in the EPL, while scoring/creating goals. I think he would be decent in the Championship.
Just to remind you, Rooney scored 8 league goal last season....which is unbelievably bad. The previous season he was a little better, with 12 league goals. Vardy scored as many goals in 1 season, than Rooney did in 2 seasons.
Rashford, as an 18 year old (last season) was/is better than Rooney.

Rooney is not as good as you seem to believe.
