No transfer fee automatically heading into the players pockets aka higher wages. It´s why Perez would rather sell AdM for 75 and buy James for 75, than keep AdM. Cause now James is on five per year, while AdM would have been at ten. And you can sell more jerseys for a new toy, too.

I think we now have a free for all in the wage structure after Ibra/Pogba.
As the ticket prices go up then the game will get unaffordable for many. I don't mind paying top wages for world class players, paying world class wages to average, overrated, underachieving and underperforming players is an embarrassment in my book.
But Lingard is none of those things. Plus we have frozen season ticket prices over the past couple of seasons not to mention more domestic and overseas TV rights, sponsorship deals etc.

I still don't even know where the figure has come from. I get fans being concerned about the club wasting money but as far as i'm concerned Lingard is a United player that gives everything for us.

Fair enough, although this year we've had anything but that. Mkhitaryan didn't play initially, was out due to injury. Mata didn't feature for stretches, Martial has barely featured and Rashford has played less than many expected. I don't think he knows what he wants and is just going with whoever is in fit and in form at the moment.
Reading this forum over the years and noticed that one of the biggest complaints you guys have had is how your club keeps around so many average players. To give one of those average players £100k a week is strange. I could be wrong, but I'm not even sure some of our better players at Chelsea are on that much.

It would have been like us giving Mikel 100k a week.

It seems Ed is thinking by throwing more money here and there he's proving we're an elite club .

Idiotic thinking , being big clubs have no relation with idiotic money spending .

Lingard i s not bad as a squad player but anything higher then 50k per week is just rediculous and proves how rotten the club organization is , we're like those who suddenly find a treasure and decided to spend the hell out of it .

£100k per week must be a wage for a first 11 player, if Jesse is viewed as first 11 player, this can only be seen as a serious lack of ambition by the club.

I could understand getting his contract updated so he doesn't need leave for nothing but now we're stuck with him for at least 4 years, as there's not a club on the planet that would match that wage.

Very true and he gets my respect for that. On Saturday, he was one of the few that made an effort to try and make something happen.
I am happy he has got a contract, and if it had been a contract that recognises a youth player that has now become a squad player great.
However, If we want to challenge as a club again we will not achieve it with players of his quality in starting positions.

I was thinking that by getting rid of Bastian and depay and getting rid of Young and Rooney in summer we'll be moving closer to solve the problem of over wages in the team.

Just to find we are willing to give a squad average player a 100k it's unreal . This is a joke .

You know I think we are a joke of a team and a club at the moment, with a mad clown on the sideline and buffoons running the club.

If Fellaini gets a contract extension tomorrow, I will not be responsible for my acts or omissions.

Welcome to Manchester reception committee
He's home grown. He is a good squad player and he has done some good work for us. I know i rate him higher than most people on the board do, but to me it makes perfect sense to want to keep him. He's getting a new contract because he's doing the job the manager wants. Congrats to him and let's hope it works out long-term for him and us.

Happy to keep hold of him. Couldn't give a feck what he's being paid. He is the latest line in players hated on the caf because our posters once played football manager and now think they know everything despite never playing the game and watching it for abput 43 minutes and spending half of that match they watched thumping their little keyboards.
Think you got a bit carried away thumping on your little keyboard there, mate ;)

We could have kept hold of him on the same contract or an increase up to maybe 40-45K i am sure would have done the deal.
Where was the panic? Were Barcelona sniffing for his signature??

I don't hate him....a local lad who gives his best and obviously loves the club. Every club needs squad players that can do a job....you just don't pay them 5 million a year I would suggest.
We are all paying his wages, either at the turnstile or for sky.
This is the key point that seems to be being ignored by many.

Where on Earth was the need to give Jesse Lingard a 100k four year contract!?

If Manchester United offered Jesse Lingard a 2/3 year 45-55k a week contract he surely, surely should be over the moon with that?

It just seems insane reasoning if you try to imagine the conversation...

"No one else is trying to sign him from us, he's a local lad who loves the club, he's not good enough to be starting for us with our best 11 at present, and further still, we'll probably add another 200m of talent to the first team in a few months anyway and he has virtually zero commercial appeal..."

"Hmm, how much does that Dele Alli fella get paid again?"

"45k a week"

"Hmm, what about that Mané bloke?"

"He gets 90k a week"

"Ok, with all that considered, lets pay Jesse Lingard 100k a week".

That conversation, more or less must've happened, and Donald Trump is the President of America - it's almost Truman Show-like in how it makes me feel.

It's an odd day and age.

Spurs don't pay any of their players as well as we do. If Alli was with us, he'd be on 150k a week.
You're missing the whole point, offering players with prospect 100k a week is good for their development how? These figures should only be dished out to players that are at full potential otherwise its messes with their determination and motive, no wonder the standard of development in this country has taken a humongous dive.

I'm pretty confident Tottenham's secret to turning players into great ones is down to the way they're treated, under a well balanced strict wage structure.

No issues with any of this and while I'm not convinced he's good enough for us, I hope it works out too .... just think the amount is wrong, not because it's my money but the precedent it can set for new players (are they coming to play for us or the money?) and because it makes it really hard to move player on IF they don't work out.... as we've found out recently.

I hope he becomes a huge part of United, evolving into much more than a squad player, in the years to come ... mourinho seems to think he has a lot of potential

Id pay 100k a week for a player who can dab like that.

On a serious note, we can afford it. It is a ridiculous amount but so is everything in football theae days. Im happy hes in for the long run,hes english, squad player, pace, and really tries his best. Won us 3 cups at Wembley now too.

In a real world he would be on 50k max but this us 2017 and not 2010.

Good posts on this topic from you all 'round, you actually sound like you kinda (kinda) care about United, which is always classy from Oppo fans.

Anyway, I'll return the good vibes by saying that I think your club's business over recent years has just been incredible. You buy at good, sane prices, and sell strongly, and have a solid, sensible wage structure. No surprise you're where you are, because good decisions go from the top down.

So looking at your wage list, all these players, for the current PL leaders, are on the same or less than Jesse Lingard...

Would Lingard get in their team? Would they pay him 100K for his level of performance?
They'd probably make him Captain, knowing their stupid decision-making history, but their owners would be too tight to pay him £100k.

José is (was?) a better manager than Klopp.

And overall, our club is better run.

It's just these mental, random decisions - particularly in transfer fee and wage structure - that baffle and frustrate.
Well my jury is out on that one. Has been from day one. Of course next year will tell the story, can he turn it around?

He wouldn't play for any of the top 6 lets be honest. The joke is the contract is way above market levels or any reasonable demand for his ability. Nobody else would pay him anywhere close to that.
I don't think that is being tight....sensible on this occasion. The next half decent signing is going to look at that and think well I am worth 150 K.

It's a bit over-priced but not by much. He's 24 years old, this is going to be his wage until he is 29. He's not being paid £100k a week based on his performances over the last 5 years, it's a prediction of what a player of his level is going to be worth over the next 5 years. Over the next 5 years £100k a week for a squad player is going to look a lot less than it does right now.

If it's £75k a week and not £100k then it's a very decent deal for the club.

Can't help but feel like a lot of the uproar over this from United fans is due to how they think this is perceived by fans of other clubs/outside parties. You can see it peering through with the comparisons to the wages of players from other clubs eg "Delle Ali is making Xk per week, yet we're paying Lingard so much more and they're doing better than us. The club is in shambles", like if it's a personal embarrassment to them.

The club makes loads more money than most other clubs. If this is what they value Jesse to be then so be it. We have managers, as well as other business men looking into these contracts when they're being made up. If they think this is what he's worth and we can afford it, then who are we as fans to say it isn't worth it, the club isn't being properly run etc.

Jesse is a handy player to have around, if Spurs pays their best players what we pay a squaddie, why does that bother so many people? Every club operates on a different budget and decides to pay their players in accordance with that.

Fans these days use transfer fees/wages as a source of banter far too much for my liking, and it really shows at times like this.

You can say whatever you want but Lingard isn't worth getting paid 100k/ week. Hasn't proven anything to warrant that much money. He doesn't score goals on a regular basis for us. He's not that creative and he's not a marketer's delight either. For godsake, he can't cross the ball to save his life.

Very poor negotiating from us, a player like Lingard should be happy that he's at a club of such stature to begin with. We should be holding the cards.

How do you know what Lingard is worth to United? The money in football is crazy, if the club thinks that's what he's worth then I don't see how we as fans can say that a player isn't worth that amount. There isn't some equation we can plug a players name and performances into that tells us what wages they're worth.

Not at all, most of us that think the wage is too high (that i've seen) think so because he will be close to impossible to sell due to his wages if the club goes and buys the quality needed to challenge for the league. It's more about being tired of seeing average footballers stick around due to high wages rather than the issue of the players getting those wages or what the other clubs do. Comparing the salaries with what other clubs pay their players becomes relevant when we take into account the possibility of us wanting to sell him in the future, that's part of the reason why we can boast about our top earners earning tons (others can't pay as much = we are more sure that they'll stick around), but are worried when our squad-players gets paid a lot.

If it was a title-contending squad that played nice football, I'm sure the tone from some of us would have been somewhat different as the quality of the squad wouldn't still need adjusting and stability and small upgrades here and there would have been what we would look for.

I understand that people are glad from the perspective that he is a local lad, he works hard, has glimpses of brilliance and doesn't moan and bitch about not being a starter etc, and I'm happy about that as well, but I want to see United be a footballing powerhouse again (on the pitch), and I think this kind of wages for someone we might want to shift on is a bad idea. In this case though, there is the English quota that needs to be filled, and after having thought it over I don't really see any great English talent around that will fill those spots in a better way than Lingard at the moment or in the near future. At least not enough to make him someone we should shift on in the next 4 or so years, so I've changed my tone on the wages, but I certainly agree on the basis that many have when they disagree on the number given.

So £100k if United make the CL but likely to be £75k a week according to the reports. I have no idea any more - wages and transfer fees have been out of control/meaningless for a long time, so although I'd say it's ridiculous, maybe its just what 'normal' has become.

Regardless, I don't really care of he's on £5k or £500k a week, I just don't rate him at all.

This is one of the more well thought out responses I've seen on here mate. I definitely can see where you're coming from. Like you said though, I don't think Jesse is a player we would be looking to shift out anytime in the near future.

We both want United to become a powerhouse again, that much is certain, and Jesse definitely isn't a player who's going to get us back to the top on his own. However he is a useful player to have around, works hard and chips in with his goals/performances. Not to mention the english quota. To tie down a player like that for his best years, on 100k, when the club can clearly afford it, I don't think it's that bad. If it were a player that the club should be looking to shift, like say Darmian, then I would understand this reaction, but Jesse is clearly the club values as someone worth keeping around the squad for the long haul. This isn't going to impact us signing Griezmann or whatever other top quality players that will help us get back to the top.

The quality of response is most often down to the quality of the question, you invited an answer with the way you worded things, so keep that up and I'm sure I'll see you in the mains soon enough.

I sure needed some time to get my thoughts on the contract sorted, at first I found it utterly laughable, then it just made more and more sense, but the way some in this thread have been purely condescending towards people with differing opinions (on both sides of this coin) makes it hard to come in with the mindset to give a proper reasoning for your thoughts.

Yeah, I agree with you, now that I've had time to think over the different aspects of the deal. It's not nearly as bad as many of us think/thought. I'm not one of the people who think it will have a knock-on effect when it comes to buying new players in different categories (as a star in Griezmann), I do however think that Rashford for example will ask for similar wages, and other potential English/Youth squad-players will ask for similar wages, but that isn't an issue if the standard of football from the players goes up to the point where we as fans are happy with what we see. I also think that even if it has that kind of knock-on effect, it doesn't mean that the club is forced to agree to all squad-players wanting that kind of wages if they don't think they will develop, be squad-players for long or should be upgraded on.

In my head, the players on the quality of Herrera, Smalling (yes, despite my many rants of thinking he is too bad to be a starter for us) and Mata should be our go-to squad-players, as I think they can do a job in a top side, but cannot be the pillars of it. A few slightly below that standard is healthy, but not too many from my point of view.

He didn't get his first appearance for us until 2014/15.
Video says it includes goals from 2013 though, and includes Birmingham, Brighton & Derby loans (he didn't score for Leicester according to wikipedia).
Haven't watched the whole video, but I'm sure I remember his debut hat-trick for one of them was mentioned.
