I can't think of a team to be so average yet come out of it with two trophies and qualification to the Champions league.

How mental will it be.

Well we have a very good defence, and being hard to beat always stands in you good stead in a cup.

Only Chelsea and Spurs deserve CL.

Liverpool, United, City and Arsenal have all been the same this season.

We've been quite fortunate with the teams left in the EL to be honest, compared to previous years.

Not that mental. We're defensively strong, resilient and have spirit. And Mourinho will make more changes this summer to make it more his team.

I am glad we have taken the Europa league seriously.

We have learnt how to play again in Europe.

Our general European record has been abysmal over the last few years. Even against the smaller clubs ( knocked out of the UCL group stages twice in the last few years.

It will be an invaluable experience especially for the younger players.

Across the Universe....from Old Trafford.
IF we win the Europa League is accurate.
Mourinho was serious about just going for the Europa Cup after the Swansea match.

Ajax are a very good side.
Score lots of goals and have lost only 3 times last I saw. Have the tightest defence...and they may still win the title this season.

Hope some of us do not think we just have to show up.

Although we have lost Zlatan and Rojo, we have others coming back.

Big Thursday...then I am focusing on May 24th IF we get through.

I'd be lying if i said I wasn't bitter about the level of competition this year compared to last when Europa was our one route to the Champions League. You can only beat what's in front of you but you've been lucky to avoid any of what I'd call the "B" tier European teams this year. Still, Europe is never straight forward any year.

Or maybe we aren't average & some strange circumstances got us here. Our squad is super-thin and yet any of the players available can be plagued with a long term injury.

More a reflection of the tournamemt than us. Group stages we appeared as a team that couldn't give two tosses yet made the knock outs. Mixed bag performances got us to the semis.

Not a slag on us to have gotten where we have just how much of a shite competition UEFA have made out out of the EL.

Still need to win it ofc, Ajax won't be easy

They seem to have hit good form latley. They beat Shalke and rolled over Lyon with 4-1. Just seen today they won again with 4-0. They might still win the Dutch league this year. Ajax has really had a transformation over the course of this season, being quite average in the begining of it, with alot of new young players to settle in but now they are on fire, full of confidence, they score easily and they sure as hell won't be an easy game for us in the final.

I don't agree with the OP's assessment. We've spent an obsene amount of money over the years, have a good squad and are the 5th best team (even better in terms of personnel) in what is probably the second best league in club football. We've got players like Ibra, De Gea, Pogba, Mkhitarian, Mata, Martial etc. in our squad. The other Europa league contenders would die to have the squad we have.

So no, it wouldn't be insane for us to win the Europa league. You'd think we're Bournemouth on the cusp of European greatness/over achieving, reading the OP. We're Manchester United and this sort of season should be the bare minimum given our resources. Given where we stand right now, obviously we'd all be glad with bare minimum being achieved.

If we play Ajax in the final it will be tough. We havent played a team like Ajax in a while, so much pressure, speed, trickery, bravery. United will have to be very well organised and Mkhi, Pogba, Rashford and Bailly at their best. First both should make the finals though.

When I look at that Ajax side and the current state of ours I would say they are favourites to win, simply by outscoring us. This will promptly be seen as a blessing somehow. We seem cursed this year rather than fated to have Ibra score against his old team on his home soil.

They wont get the amount of space they enjoyed against Lyon.

Also their team is younger and more likely to suffer stage fright.

OP probably doesn't remember the last time we won the league...that was an average team!

This is why you pay big money, for the big managers!

Pogba might make more than all of Ajax's squad put together. It would be a damn shame if we lost to them.

They looked like fearless youth to me in their semi-final which to them is a huge game. Lyon were the team we all didn't want in the final originally. They are the form team and far fresher and energetic. This will be no walk over. We will have to produce a special performance which I'm just not sure the players have left in the tank.

If we win the EL and end the season with two trophies I'll consider it a success. That'd be two more trophies than City, Spurs and Liverpool have won this season combined. Not bad.

I read the same things before the game against Celta Vigo. All the pre-match doom and gloom and predictions of being outclassed versus the reality that made itself plain in the first 45 minutes. We may not beat Ajax if we both play in the final, but we are definitely the favorites.

United have not been an average team. The post from @Attila clearly shows Mourinho got the team to perform after a few months into the season. Since the Chelsea defeat we have earned 5 less points than the "great Spurs" team, won the EL trophy and are on the verge of getting to the final of the Europa cup.

I think United would have easily qualified for the Champions League had they sacrificed Europa League, EL cup, by playing with weakened teams and a few youth players.

The cups are not the reason we could barely score a goal at home all season and drew over half the games.

Not to get ahead.. but it would also be brilliant to contest the Super Cup against Juventus or Real.

I would put it like this - I have a hard time imagining a team getting so much luck in a cup-tournament as United have. We could win this tournament without playing a single top 30 side in Europe.

St.Etienne 7th in France - 36 points behind Monaco
Anderlecht - best team in Belgium. And granted that Belgian teams have improved massively...but they are still not a great side
Rostov - 6th in Russia - 21 points behind Spartak Moscow
Celta Vigo - 12th in Spain - 40 points behind Real and in rotten form.
(probably) Ajax - 2nd in Holland - 3 points behind Feyenoord - and probably not a better side than Anderlecht

Every single good side have lost against much weaker opposition...like Roma and Spurs....

If we squander this chance - it would probably be the biggest disappointment I have experienced in MANY years.....

You've got it wrong. Ajax will have to produce a special performance to beat us. It's as though we've become some minnows all of a sudden?! They're a decent team no doubt, but to say they're fecking favourites is a joke. Our starting XI will be fresh against Ajax, there is absolutely no excuse.

Ajax are bang average away from home though, they were destroyed by Rostov and have only won once away from home in Europe all season.

Maybe there is a good reason for that. They are lot better than how you rate.

Same Celta Vigo who destroyed Barca this season and last at home but ManUtd barely conceded a chance and should have scored 2-3 goals.

Remember before Celta game? Everyone was saying how they are raise their game, won against Real and Barca and how it would have been really hard for us. They barely had a good chance all game.
