Selling smalling and buying keane doesnt make sense, he wont come here to sit on the bench again. I think we will buy a Left back if we buy another defender that is. We maybe open to offers for smalling, i think of both smalling and jones, i think Jones has more talent and less mistakes in him. I think if a good offer comes in from a midtable team like stoke/albion/West ham/southampton then we will sell him. Maybe arsenal will want smalling as Arsene always had a liking for him. We need to fleece them.
No one sit on the bench these days. There's enough game play to keep everyone happy

A blind man can see that Smalling isn't good enough at football to play for Manchester United. Decent defender but we can't carry a coward on the ball like him for any longer.

Jones is the more talented of the 2 and performed the better this season. He should stay

Keep Jones, for the entertainment factor alone, "the many faces of Phil Jones", but with Smalling been 3rd captain,
Jose will probably let Jones go. Jones is injury prone ,but to me he is the better player.
Smalling ,if the rumours are true has had other offers, so he is maybe easier to sell than Jones.
If it was up to me then I say Smalling goes.

So under the homegrown players rule, who qualifies if they are named to the first team squad?

A. Pereira
J. Pereira
Josh Harrop

Anyone else?

I really thought Smalling had finally come good last season. Such a shame.

Ultimately both need to moved on, but I'd sell Smalling first because Jones tends to injure himself due his reckless style of play, unlike Smalling who seems fragile. That's avoidable with some coaching from Mourinho. He's also the most versatile of the two. Smalling is better at pressuring attackers and obviously better aerially but Jones would be my choice to keep for now. I don't see us getting another CB because a good one will command a silly fee. In the event that we do though, I would advocate moving both on.

Keep both unless we sign Keane. Then we can reassess when Rojo is back.

I think Jones is the better player. He's more injury prone, obviously, but it's a higher risk - higher reward. I think it's worth it, considering we have 3 defenders ahead of either in the pecking order. He's still young (er), so there's a chance still.

Jones is ten times the player Smalling is. Pity his injury problems.

I believe we named these players as homegrown last season:
Pogba, Rooney, Carrick, Young, Shaw, Jones, Johnstone, Smalling and Lingard

I meant new players who can be added to that category, but thanks.

From that list it looks like we can afford to lose a few players in the upcoming years and replace them with our own youth/other homegrown youth players.

Smalling is a good defender but, his lack of ability on the ball prevents him from being a great defender. He should go.

Smalling for me. He just lacks the footballing brain and he can't play with his feet. He looks awkward all the time and always concedes headers, pulls shirts and has terrible marking skills to top it all off. All Smalling has is height and physicality.

He's basically a lesser talented Fellaini. With more pace and he's a CB. Fellaini is actually decent on the ball in comparison.

Injuries aside, Jones hasn't been that bad. I would keep him as a squad option if it was between him and Smalling.

We should offer Smalling + cash for Van Dijk. Winds up the Scousers and gives us one of the best CBs in the league on top of it. Sorted.

Both can go and sign Keane from Burnley giving us a quartet of Lindelof, Bailly, Keane and Rojo with Blind and Tuanzebe as back up unless Tuanzebe is loaned out as he probably should be to aid his development.

Jones should go. Although he is just as bad as Smalling, the latter has a slightly better injury record. Jones is completely useless as he is constantly injured...

Smalling is the better defender and has a far better injury record the last few years, so if one has to go Jones would be the obvious one to leave.

None until January, unless Mourinho finally sees Blind as more than a chance center-back. Rojo won't be available anytime soon. I very much doubt Lindelöf will impose himself as Bailly did. Even so, if I had to choose, I would keep Jones and let go of Smalling, but his height might protect him.

Both if other players can be brought in. If I had to choose one, it would be Jones as Smalling is slightly less injury-prone.

"He'd do well at a club just above the relegation zone"

People don't half put down some of our very good players.

I'd get rid of neither. They're both good defenders. Rojo is also injured for a length of time. Our defence is already great and today it's got even better, yet I log into to here to read yet more bullshit. It's impressive, it really is.

Has to be Jones.

He simply cannot be relied upon to stay healthy. End of.

Which is unfortunate because I think Jones is the better player.

Lindelof, Bailey, Rojo, Blind and Tuanzabe are good enough for CB position both in terms of quality and depth.

Just sell both of them.

With Axel coming through we should get rid of both Jones and Smalling.

Jones can't be trusted to stay fit but works well with Rojo. Smalling had a poor season but was great the year before. It's so hard to know isn't it. Smalling might edge it just because he can stay fit more, Jones couldn't be trusted to put on his socks without a potential injury.

Would also say Jones. I wonder if he's ever played a full season without missing time for injury? For all his talent, he's simply not reliable.

Both. Rather have a couple of the kids behind Eric and Victor.
Yeah, great idea. Bailly will get injured sooner or later and it's not like he has proved anything special yet, and you have no idea how much will Lindelof adapt here in his first season, and knowing our team he might get injured at start too, so that would be obviously great planning.

Jones is yet to have a solid season for us, Smalling has shown that he atleast can be very good. Plus, how can anyone say Jones when you consider how often he's injured? He's a waste of space.

Given the number of defence crisis' we've had over the years I'd rather not get rid of both. Too high risk.

I feel that Smalling has done more during his time here and it's more reliable to be fit to play. Jones had the better potential but we need players who will play.
