There was a rumour the other day that Huddersfield were in for Leeds' Chris Woods for £15m... and remember, Ross McCormack has been sold for £11m & 12m in the last few years.

It's only that world in England. Tell me where Sule is quoted at £50m? It's not the going rate is the going let's rip off the premier league clubs rate.
The PL is where they will make their money. This what happens when you brag too much. Other leagues clubs are not going to let you plead poverty.

To be honest, i think if we offer £40 million for Neymar, Barcelona will think about it. Much better deal than what we're paying for Morata.

Jose actually ordered him to play wide for the reserves to work on his technique and tactical awareness. it paid off as his debut for Real's senior side came out wide.

That all said he prefers playing centrally as a 9.
So do Martial and Rashford, not entirely working out for them!

I'm hoping we're buying him as an out and out striker. Can't be fecked with another wide forward who's itching to play up top.

People have been saying that for years.
The bubble won't burst, football will reach its natural peak of interest and the inflation will stop accordingly.

The only thing that could burst the bubble is if a handful of plastic clubs like City and PSG began to dominate and people lost interest. Hopefully that isn't going to happen.

€80m? This price is getting painful. There had better be a significant part of that fee as bonuses.

It's United's money, I don't get why people care. If they have it, would you rather they spend it or give it to the Glazer's?
Bragging rights at the office. When we sign Bailly for 30 and city sign Stones for 50 and the cheaper one turns out better it's banter for days. It's that simple

The Pogba deal shows how the price does matter. People expected him to be world class when in reality he is very young in his first year back in a new league. The price tag meant people expected far too much from him and he was under scrutiny. Even now some people would call him a flop despite actually a very promising first season with some great moments.

We don't want a questionable price-tag hanging over Morata from day 1. £60m is about right but anymore is getting overpriced. Still, you are right in that I can't see how it would put you off the transfer. Extra pressure yes but it isn't our money and we do need a striker and Morata is a very good one. Maybe the Pogba few has been spoken about so much because it was a world record.

I think a huge point that many miss is the wages. Morata won't be on massive wages here. He might be on 120, 150,000 a week. Which is about half of what Rooney and Ibra are/were on. Think about that. United are saving 100,000 a week by signing Morata. Plus we could save another 100,000 a week by doing another similar deal. We've also shifted players like Depay, Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger, each of whom were on 150,000 a week. Conservatively, we have another 800,000 per week available if we get rid of Rooney plus those that have already gone. We can afford a little more on the fee, I believe. We could also see at least two more transfers in of the same kind of price and not even come close to damaging our budget. Football is a crazy business, way beyond normal financial considerations.

Yeah bc people don't really talk all that much about Luke Shaw - he was/is a world record for a LB. 60m for a young promising striker doesn't seem all that crazy anymore.

I care for several reasons, most important being that our squad needs several other additions and we don't have unlimited money.

On one hand I agree, but on the other hand:

1. When we spend a feckton on these just-about-good-enough players, more and more clubs will start to demand the same. The long-term effects can definitely harm us, even if we are filthy rich.
2. It's a matter of principle. If a product is worth a certain amount of money, you shouldn't have to spend twice as much just because you can.
3. Like @ChaddyP wrote: it's embarrassing for the fans if the transfer doesn't live up to the hype.
4. It puts unneccessary pressure on the player, who feels that he will have to justify the pricetag.
5. Perhaps most importantly: it is our money(sort of). A big chunk of the money comes from us fans! We want to see the money spent as sensibly as possible.

No way will Morata play out wide; anyone who says he will doesn't know what they're talking about. He's as 9 as they come. People are just saying that because he played a few games out wide for Mourinho while he was still learning his trade and they still had both Benzema and Higuain, so it was the best way for him to get opportunities.

I'd like to see these plenty of players actually. Bear in mind, they'd have to be reasonably attainable and have played a meaningful amount of minutes. I'd say 1000+.
I don't know where to pull those exact stats from for all competitions and all players but I would also like if someone could show us that for this year and last 5 years.

If I look at just the league goals Oliver Giroud has 12 goals in 1209 mins compared to Morata's 15 goals in 1341 minutes. Morata is marginally better Giroud if we go by the goals per minute stat. Not to mention Harry Kane(29 in 2523mins) handsomely beats that stat over almost twice the number of league minutes played.

I got these stats from squawka.

Here's an image going around on caf. Mertens this season has 28 goals in 2560 league minutes.

People do realize that transfers are never paid entirely upfront, right? We're not going to just hand over 80m euros to Real overnight, there are payment schedules over many years.

The only exception I can think of is when we sold Ronaldo, where Fergie demanded all the money upfront.

Morata must really hate Madrid...they tell United they want £60+ million yet they pay him a wage probably lower then Ashley Young.

Why do so many people care about the money? We keep banging on about being the richest club who make stupid amounts of money which is well documented by the money lists recents but some get in a hissy fit when we spend it? What would you rather? It stay in the Glazers bank accounts?
Most successful businesses, which we are, manage their cashflow well.

We will have a budget to adhere to as with every transfer window. We pay too much on one target, we may lose out on another.

This. Teams will ask more money for average players if we pay 80 to 90 million for Morata. We got Pogba for 90 million and he was a starter for Juventus, while Morata is a 2nd or 3rd choice striker for Real.

But who cares what people say? You yourself pointed out that he had a very promising first season. It's highly speculative to assume that his price tag contributed to whatever struggles he may have had.

TV revenues will eventually level out. The viewing numbers has fallen a bit since last season.

Sky will pay less or the same in the next contract. The great white hope will be the American and Asian markets. If they continue to rise, then the revenues may have modest rise for the next few years.

This will affect transfer prices as transfer budgets will be a % of their cashflow.

Isn't it great that the caf knows the in's and out's of the clubs finances, im glad we have them otherwise the club would be in shambles. You'd think such a big business like United would have people in place to decide how much we can pay for a player coming to the club. But i hear that type of expertise takes several years of training, how do we have so many experts on this forum?

And as a successful business which manages it's cash flow well it's fairly straight forward to assume that if we bid a certain amount for a player it's because we've taken into account our other targets and know it won't affect their purchases

People cant have an opinion? You may be okay with spending 80m on Morata. He isnt. Whats the big deal? What happens if the number was 200m? You still okay with that?

Why should it matter at all? Most transfers, like you said, are paid in installments.

For example, we could buy Harry Kane for £200m today and that would only be £40m per year over next 5 years. If Spurs demanded £200m upfront, we would simply go to the bank and loan out £160m and at our current interest rate on debt(~2.78%), we would pay Bank of America £43m each year for next four years with an upfront £43m down payment.

Using your own stats, GirouD scores a goal every 100min approx, Morata every 89. That's not marginal at all, its quite signficant. You seriously can't say that's marginal and then say Kane handsomely beats that when looking at the stats you used, he manages a goal every 87 minutes. Difference between Morata's goal rate and Kane is a LOT closer than Morata and Giroud.

That graphic includes chances created too, going by goals per min he's superior than most on that list including mbappe. You've listed 2 players (not plenty) 1 you were wrong abouit (Giroud), 1 has a very similar scoring rate although over a greater amount of minutes (Kane) and he's not slightly attainable. Dont think you have much of a point here.

The fee is always a talking point. Always will be. Pogba is never worth 89m pound, in a month of sundays. And other clubs laugh about it, especially city, but yet 50m on Stones was worth it. And they were desperately hoping pogba joined them.

I dont think Morata or Lukaku are worth their fees, but admit i think Lukaku is better. For their fees id want Lewandowski level strikers

I never once said that you can't have an opinion, im sayings its absolute bollocks. So am i not allowed to have an opinion on your opinion? What do i need to do to get into this exclusive club where my opinion needs to be accepted as valid no matter what?

I am not okay or not okay with paying whatever price for Morata because i am in no position to decide his value.

Someone can give an opinion on what medication i should take, what structure a bridge should have but if they know feck all about the topic being discussed then i dont take them seriously.

Pogba was a one off case because his marketability was off the charts. No other player going for big money this summer comes even close.
