Rooney was never my favorite player on the team because of his behavior off the pitch. But he's a player I would never forget what he did for United.

Really sad to see him cant even say goodbye with United shirt at OT but I'm sure he will get the best reception ever when he comes back.

I've been as critical as anyone about him over the past few seasons and was desperate for him to leave, but now the day looks to have come cant help but feel a little gutted.

They're not contradictory though. Someone on twitter puts it very correctly

Yeah, kinda gets it right. Definitely a strange feeling but a right thing to do.

Also, his legacy will be properly measured this way and people in time will appreciate more what he achieved in this club. The sheer number of goals, trophies, brilliant moments are nothing but impressive.

Thanks for all the memories Wayne.

Good luck, Rooney, even though you've been shit for the past 3 years, you're still a United legend. It'll be weird watching him play for Everton, though.

Will always be a legend, it's the right time for him to go but it's still sad thinking we've seen the last of Wayne Rooney in a United shirt :(. Thanks for all the memories!!

United fans who mock him, just think they're too "cool" to like him.

He is a club legend. Definitely time for pastures new.

Its not sad for me, im relieved and happy! Hes finally gone!
I wouldn't even say I was happy. He's just become so marginal that it feels like the goodbye has already happened. Hopefully distance will make the heart grow fonder and I can remember the good times, but there's a lot of other nonsense that I'd like to forget that happened in the past 4 or 5 years too.

Videos like the one that Evertonian posted to be a big weirdo are the Rooney we'd all love to remember.

Absolute nonsense, everyone is entitled to feel how they like about our players, he was a great player but I've never really liked him and I feel the same about Giggs too.

No white text? Surely baiting, but I'll snag.

The only conceivable reason to think such a thing is if you started following United after Sir Alex retired or you are biased by not liking him for his transfer requests.

He is a club legend. There is no opinion about it. It's indisputable fact considering he is the Clubs all-time goal scorer, not even considering the mountain of success we had as a team with him at the core.
I've supported united since the 70's and confer "legend" status on very few players.

He should not be the record holder as he should have moved on years ago. If he had moved on and behaved with grace and professionalism then he might have earned a legend label.

The last few years have tarnished him and shown him in a poor light. He is a great player who once played for us. Not a legend. My personal view I know.

Right time for him to leave. Although his form over that last few seasons maybe didn't justify his position here at times, he still really deserved to be our all time top scorer. Delighted he got there.

Only felt real watching him pull into Everton's training ground - it still caught me a little to think this fella is actually leaving us :(

Thanks for the memories Roo. Brilliant servant to the club overall. Legend by all accounts. Hope you have fun and find form back at Everton
Great post mate.

Ah i getcha...hard to gauge humour sometimes on the internet!

Someone really ought to invent some little pictures or something that we could add to our statements to help in situations like this!
Yep. Especially when the humour is mock indignation. IRL it is hard to tell from the real thing.

I talked about the fans who mock him. Yea liking and disliking a player is different but to say, "glad he's going", "good riddance"...etc etc is mocking his achievements at the club. Why can't fans just be graceful when a player leaves? Hell, if a player leaves and he mocks United, every single fan would be up in arms...& rightfully too.

We should just show the lad some respect. If not for him as a person but for his achievements at the club alone should merit it.
