There's more to being an English player at the backbone of the team than just counting as homegrown.

Just stating fact, can't avoid how it comes across. United are officially the richest club in football and the first to surpass a £500 million turnover. The huge sponsorship deals with Chevrolet and Adidas clearly having the desired effect.
"Desperation buy" to me implies a lack of time/options forcing you to buy someone. If the Dier links prove to be true then it strikes me more as a straightforward bad buy.
He isn't a desperate buy at all, we've been after him for ages. Desperate buy is usually a signing during the last few days of the transfer window.

Dier played very little at DM last season, Wanyama covered the role for the most part while Dier played at CB in a back three, but the season before last he was outstanding at DM, second only to Kante in my opinion.
