Shouldve been looking for an upgrade on Carrick but it feels like we basically just got a slightly younger Carrick who can play more often. Expected more but I do think he'll be a good signing.

Not sure about him, but he's one of us now so good luck to him.

Glad to see the initial fee at £35M. Much more palatable than £50M!

Fingers crossed he does well.

Very happy with this signing. The last time Mourinho signed Matic in his second season Chelsea won the league so it's got to work for us hasn't it? Actually I'm starting to see some similarities with this United team and Mourinho's second Chelsea side. Matic will play as DM and Pogba will play in the Fabregas role linking the midfield with the attack. People forget how good Fabregas was that season, he managed 18 assists and had great link up play with Costa who also arrived at the same time. Now we have Lukaku who will hopefully link up with Pogba in the same way and they can help us to challenge for the league. We don't need Herrera in this formation so the extra attacker can play but in the big games I can see him coming in to play in a 3 man midfield.

Interesting point

De Gea - Courtois

Valencia - Ivanovic
Bailly - Terry
Lindelof - Cahill
Darmian - Azpilicueta

Matic - Matic
Herrera - Fabregas
Pogba - Oscar

Perisic? - Willian
Lukaku - Costa
Mhkitaryan- Hazard

Still probably not quite where Jose would really want the squad, lacking the experienced CB, outstanding LB and the difference maker in attack (as well as the hardworking winger but we know who we want in that role) so I think the comparison that our current side is probably more like the Chelsea side he had in his first season back is still the best which just goes to show how much work was needed and how badly the squad was neglected under Moyes and LVG

The old midfield trio of 'one to get it, one to give it, and one to go' is now complete. I foresee good things.
We had that last season.

Herrera, Carrick, Pogba.....in the order you specified.
The question is: is Matic better than Carrick?

"Can Manchester United score? They always score"
ShedEnd not happy

This guy sums it up:

won't lie, i'm not happy about this at all. Once again we are selling a player to one of our rivals, and in all honesty i am getting sick of it. They refuse to do business with us so why should keep helping them out ? £40m or £50m is a nice chunk of money for a player who has lost his spark and hasn't been able to regain it for some time now, but that money means nothing if we don't have a replacement already in. We may well have a replacement already lined up, but i would feel a lot more comfortable if that player was already here rather than worry and speculate.

The season starts for us in exactly one week and we have Fabregas, Kante and Baker as CM's, that's it. Bakayoko won't feature for a few weeks and has played zero minutes of pre season football, he's not even close to being ready for us, and being forced to go with Fabregas in a two man midfield for any length of time is not something i want to see. Fabregas is a fantastic footballer, but he can't play in a two man midfield anymore, that has been obvious since the disaster of 2015/16. The opposition will be rubbing their hands with glee if they see that midfield, one pass through and they are in.

I just don't understand this strategy of ours. Our squad is thinner than it's ever been. I can understand letting the odd player go here and there before bringing anybody else in, but it seems like we rarely sign a player anymore before we let other players go. Caballero, signed after we let Begovic go. Rudiger, signed after we let Terry and Ake go. Bakayoko, signed after we let Chalobah and Loftus-Cheek go. Morata is the only one we have signed where somebody hasn't gone first, and he's only here because Costa is leaving.

We are one week from the season beginning and we are the only team out of the top sides that has let so many players go without bringing enough replacements in. With Matic leaving, that brings our total number of players who have left the club since January to 10, 11 when Costa leaves. We should be adding to the team, not shrinking it. We are already 3 players down through injury or lack of fitness. With the size of our squad, we can't afford injuries.

I don't know what's going on but it seem's like we are taking huge gambles right now and i could quite easily see things going really badly wrong. As its stands, we still need a few more players to fill this squad out. There is no way this squad is ready to compete in 4 competitions. With the way things are going, the training ground will be half kids and half senior players.

How many games did he start last season? How's his injury record? He's 29 but he plays like he's 41, too slow.

If Matic allows Pogba to play at his most natural and freely and also allows Herrera to do the same then he'll be a brilliant signing, you only need to look at how both play with Carrick protecting them to see the value someone playing the same role but being able to play weekly adds to the team.

We've still got a month before the transfer deadline so I'd like to see us now try and add a quality winger and a quality left back on top of what we've already got and I think we'd be a serious contender for the title this coming season, I know Matic isn't as such a glamour signing but he's a very vital cog if Pogba can do maximum damage up the other end of the pitch.

What's his passing range like? I see a lot of people saying he's carricks replacement but I assume that's only because he's a dmf and not a like for like replacement

Excellent acquisition. Finishing touch on the midfield and gives us arguably the most complete mid3 in the league (Magic-Herrera-Pogba). Allows Herrera/Pogba to finally play in proper positions now having got that crucially needed DM.

Less minutes for Fellaini. Jose seems certain he'll improve us.

Good enough for me.

Not a spectacular signing but I'll take it. An ancient Carrick aside, we didn't have anyone left in the squad that could play the DM role properly. Matic's stock has fallen in previous seasons but if he can play anything like he did in his first title winning season at Chelsea he'll be a vital part of our midfield. Let's hope he hits the ground running here.

Never going to be a glamour signing with a DM. But I'm confident Matic will plod along and go unnoticed in most games but do a solid job.

Just seen Sky's most expensive 29 year old table, they are such a shite channel nowadays. Also it's funny how they include the add ons for Lindelof and all our other signings but not for others like Mendy who they have as £47.5m.

He's already a legend for referring to united as Manchester.

Hazard was pretty dreadful that season too. Would you be unhappy with us signing him tomorrow?
course not, but hazard has two great seasons in 3, where matic has had one great one, one awful one and one where he was better but was the weakest player in chelsea's starting 11, and was no way near the player he was two season previously

He was reported to have fallen out with Mourinho. Yet it's Mourinho buying him. The fact that he's still willing to buy the player and the player is willing to work with him maybe suggests that the fall out wasn't as bad as reports would have you believe.
your right, and that does give me hope, but things obviously went very wrong that season in every way, add to that mourinho isn't exactly a very stable character, and things weren't exactly smooth sailing last season, and it isn't exactly a stretch to think their will be difficult times this season and bringing some one in who has had a difficult past with maybe beneficial as they may have learned from their mistakes, but also having two people who togther who last time they where togther was such a catastrophic melt down is worry becuase what happens once is possbible to hapen again if things go bad

None of the names we were linked with (Dier, Matic, Fabinho) came without question marks, so I think Matic might be the safest bet of the three.
agreed, and while i would have preffreed Dier as he has been far more conistent then Matic, but that was obviouly a very hard deal to pull off.

i don't think Mtac is a terrible buy, he could be a very good buy if he can reach near the form we saw in 14/15 season, but if we get the matic form 2 years ago it will be an awful buy, and if we get the matic from this season then just an ok buy.

Always that way with United signings. They are saying Lukaku was 90m but Silva is quoted at something like 42m.

A 3- year contract for a 40mil signing seems ridiculous. I had hopes of us getting Dendoncker but I'm happy to give Matic a chance.

Reckon he may get some minutes on Wednesday? Can't see him playing in the SC. He won't see any PL starts for first few matches but maybe some minutes in the first few depending on how we're doing.
