Shooting in Las Vegas

Awful tragedy. Whatever the shooter's motive, this is just another chapter in a long line of incidents that one day America will look back on and wonder why it took them so long to implement proper gun control. I mean, eventually they will, and it's remarkable that it hasn't happened yet. But unfortunately having seen the reaction after Columbine, Sandy Hook, Orlando and countless other mass shootings, nothing will change any time soon and we will see many more incidents like this.

Anyway, I'm going to get annoyed the more I look at twitter and see countless (mostly republican) Congress men and Women, Senators and other politicians offer thoughts and prayers to the victims as they did after all the other mass shootings. These people tweet their thoughts and prayers to gun violence victims on a regular basis and are in a position to do something about it, yet don't. I find it disgusting. 50 lives (probably more) have been lost and they are in a position to ensure we see less and less of this. Yet, they do nothing. A sad and sinister side to a great country.

I actually just googled that after reading his twitter page, because I had never heard the expression. Did get a couple of hits, but it doesn't look like it's used that often. And to me it sounds a bit off, which is very fitting for Trump.
I've seen it used it in the past...I just thought, with the hours he had - his 1st message would be more 'heartfelt'.

I mean 50 are dead and hundreds are injured, so what a president (any president) tweets doesnt REALLY matter.

Can we stop constantly complaining about Trump’s tweets on everything just for the sake of it Nothing wrong with what he said...quite a nice one really. Well it would be if anyone else posted it wouldn’t it.
No. Because we know what he'd be saying if certain aspects of the incident were different. Or one aspect.

Yeah nothing wrong with what he said. I don't know what people were expecting..him to abolish guns?
Its a bit of a strange tweet, welcomes are warm, condolences are deep. But thats not the point, think of his response to Charlottesville or Puerto Rico.

An attack by Isis is different. It's part of a wider issue that has been ongoing. What's he supposed to do here, declare war on a lone gunman that is already dead?

There's no wider issue with mass shootings? Really? You wanna run the numbers compared to ISIS in the US?

Imagine if Angela Merkel went on a Twitter rant about him and US gun laws right now. It would be atrocious and get universal condemnation - but that's how low the bar is for him now. That's we shouldn't normalize him. Don't forget what a awful person he really is.

Just watched some raw footage. The bullet sounds are insane, what the hell was that? An AK?

how long before trump tweets something totally inappropriate and divisive?

Seems crazy looking from the outside though that nothing seems to spark a real debate / action about banning at least automatic guns from the general public
Automatic guns are illegal. Criminals usually don't buy guns in stores either. You can legally purchase parts to build a gun with no wait or background check. It's called an 80% 'er. It even comes with the parts to complete the main body and make it 100%. I've got no idea if the vendors are required to report sales to ATF or local police but it's a rampant trade.

Whatever it was, it was fully automatic.

Full auto weapons are no longer produced commercially and obtaining one must be done through the FBI and ATF, and to my knowledge, a full auto weapon obtained through them has never been used in a mass shooting before... until possibly last night

Could he have bought it in a period of time when it was still being produced commercially?

Obama worded his condolence messages so much better. Terrific vocabulary.

What’s that got to do with it? So you are complaining because of what he might have said if the circumstances were different. Takes the biscuit that does.

I'm complaining that for political reasons the leader of the country is completely ignoring an issue that kills tens of thousands of his citizens every year.

He also has a history of trying to stop these mass shootings being so regular. So there's also that.

It's fecking disgusting, really. Innocent people shouldn't have to die dozens at a time just because a 200-year-old piece of paper say people should be allowed to own guns. I doubt they'd have put it in there if they knew that in time, guns wouldn't be a "shoot once, reload for a minute" deal.

At this point, it's probably too late for any real change anyway. That whole country's fecked for the foreseeable future with the amount of firearms in circulation.

Just stop allowing regular citizens to access anything military grade I'd say, no-one knows when mental illness might hit.
Military-grade is a misnomer. In reality, there's little difference between military guns and guns designed for and marketed to civilians, outside of the full-auto capabilities of the military guns. A lot of the time, the civilian guns will be more reliable and of a generally higher quality than what the military's packing.

If you're a gun nut it's not too difficult to convert to full auto.
That's the other thing. Filing the sear can convert from semi to full... but filing the sear is a very inexact "science" that typically leads to you shooting yourself because you filed about .001 of an inch too much off

Dozens in critical condition in hospitals.
Going to get much worse.

Nobody is complaining about what might have been said, people are complaining about what has been said. In every other atrocity that's taken place under his rule his tweets have followed the same pattern. Expression of condolence immediately followed by chest-beating about how he's going to make sure it doesn't happen again under his watch (+/- implying this is all happening because of failings of the previous regime) And today? Condolences alone. No mention of the underlying issues behind this. No promise to work to prevent it happening again. He didn't even promise to do a full investigation!

Only two deaths due to fully automatic machine guns in the last 80 years.
