They are quoting sun, who have gone with the story. He can leave at end of season for cheap and hasnt signed a contract. They signed Sancho from city in summer and have been on a youngster signing spree in recent years. Looks like another problem on the horizon for club where talented youngsters leave for playing time.

Or we could just start including him in a few squads to show we want him to be part of our future.

They will turn him into an extremely overrated player and then sell him back to us for big money. After 2-3 years with us we will sell him back to them at a cut price

He could have easily played the minutes Lingard got and we wouldn't have felt any difference, most probably Gomes would have been an improvement.

If he doesn't think he is part of our future just because he isn't getting into the squad at the moment, he's an idiot.

Oh, and of course he should play ahead of Lingard.

Sarcasm or do you generally think Lingard is League 1/2 quality?

Gomes is a young player with potential, we shouldn't hand out starts just because you need to appease a player to stay at the club. Lucky you ain't the manager at any club let alone one the size of United.

That outlook is perfectly fine. You just can't complain if he or any other player does leave to a club that will create a path for them.

Gomes should look at Sancho. I'm sure he would have played more first team football if he stayed at City this season plus a loan to Girona would have been a realistic option. Instead he finds himself playing DM for Dortmund's crap youth team.

The guy is 17. He doesn’t even start for England u17s. To play him at united now is very very premature (I know we already played him last season)

I think at this stage, he probably isn't going to sign.

Was Gomes returning from an injury of sorts during the recent WC England won? Because I read on here that he was the team captain, but whilst watching the semis and final, he wasn't starting iirc.

He went into the tournament injured but the latter stages were the managers preference. I can't remember the LWs name from Chelsea but he played very well in the final and creating most of England's opportunities using his pace and strength.

Sancho, Pulisic, Dembele, Isak, Weigl and now Gomez.

I see what you're trying to do here, BVB.

United have a patent on that methodology from the Class of 92 days.

No I don't think Lingard is a League 1/2 quality, neither he is Manchester United quality, or will ever be.

Gomes is an extremely talented young player, and we should do everything to try and keep him longterm. The way I look at it Lingard offers almost nothing and we won't lose anything really by playing our most promising youngster instead. The reality is that he will leave eventually if we don't create first-team opening for him. He will look at Pogba's example and recently Sancho's meaning we are the ones that will lose in this situation, and Lingard of course.

Thanks bud. Foden maybe, iirc? Also that Brewster kid from Pool, CF, scored a crap load of goals.

Anyway, don't want to derail the thread.

Gomes should do what is best for his career. Hopefully we can put a buy back clause of sorts into any sale - should he prefer to leave. Unless he'll be leaving out of contract, of course. Then there isn't much we can do, other than get some compensation.

I know he is 17, and that he is not even playing for the U-23, which was discussed previously as one of the reason for Gomes not signing the contract. But when you look at the dross Mkhitaryan, Lingard and Mata served us in some matches, i really think we can only gain by giving Gomes some of those minutes.

Maybe if we were in City's position of scoring loads and killing off most games early we could share minutes but as it is we're in a dog fight with 4 other teams and its too much of a risk to throw an unproven 17 year old into the mix. Best he can hope for is an injury crisis on the level of 2 years ago which saw Rashford breakthrough.

The size of our squad also means that cup runs are for keeping squad players happy too. And Mourinho knows the benefit of winning the league cup; even if it isn't flashy its still a trophy.

Sometimes, all a young player needs is an assurance that the management of the first team is consciously and intentional about creating a pathway into the first team as he progressively develops his trade.

I really don't know how people come to conclusions that these players are demanding first team football at United immediately. They are not that thick.

Just because Manchester United is big on youth doesn't mean that the manager is. It was said of Moyes that he once told the reserve staff at Everton that he didn't have time for them besides the Rooney one. Unlike Fergurson and LvG that made it a point of duty to burden themselves with the matters of the youth, I don't how a young players can look at José and think he'll be giving a fair crack in 2 years, even if he gets better .

These little things matter.

I think the best we can hope for is compensation, not sure we can submit a buy back clause but we'll see, maybe if we lower the fee. The signs aren't good an I conceded we were losing him a few months back, Real, Barca & Dortmund all linked with him isn't a good sign.

This lad you mean. @Ish

That's the one, looked really good in the final but iirc someone said he'd played u23 football so was physically more developed more than others?

Not so good for the big clubs that want to keep them under their control, just in case 1-2 make it. That´s the price you pay for being one of the biggest club in the richest league in the world with an instant need to get results. To be fair to City and United, at least they are not abusing the system like Chelsea.

Obviously good for the players and the English national team that the young players start to plan their careers more strategically. Can only help the English national team, if these top youngster sign FULL contracts whether it´s with bigger clubs abroad or with smaller EPL clubs. It´s just important that the clubs "own" the rights to the players. Nobody wants to develop players for other clubs, unless they are desperate. Loans are the death of many promising careers. The sooner you cut the cord as a player the better.

I would use City's case for a different example. If we had De Bruyne, B. Silva and D. Silva playing in those positions than fair enough, we would really risk too much by playing a 17 year old Angel Gomes. But in reality we have very inconsistent Mkhitaryan who never really proved anything here, Juan Mata who has been very ordinary and Jesse Lingard. I'm not saying we should play Gomes in the same capacity as the three of them played, but we can definitely give the kid some minutes since the three mentioned offer feck all anyway.

Is Sancho even gatting game time?

Got a subbed in late against Frankfurt and Bayern. Bosz can't exactly hand out minutes to kids in his/the team's current situation, especially not to a 17 year old who missed the pre season. Zagadou is getting plenty of minutes and Sancho will get them as well if he keeps working hard. ;)

Yeah I don't know Gomes' contract situation but I assume he is out of contract this summer? If he is out of contract, there's no hope of us inserting any sort of clause, as he will be free to leave. We'll only be due compensation. Unless we obviously plan on sorting his future out during January.

@Classical Mechanic thanks for the video. Saw that in duffer (I think it was him) thread about solo goals last night I think. Still thought he was referring to Foden, but memory's coming back to me. Foden plays for City I think. And he's also very highly rated.

Not at all. "Everything" includes putting the interests of the player above that of the team. If Mourinho thinks he's not ready to contribute to the first team yet, then that's that. We shouldn't compromise the team to make Gomes happy.

If the boss and the coaches think he needs to develop more before playing for the first team, but BVB are willing (or say that they are willing) to give him minutes and Gomes wants to go there... then so be it. I don't begrudge any young player doing whatever he thinks is best for his future. Same as I don't begrudge the club for putting the clubs interests ahead of any player.

The situation is not similar to Pogba either. Pogba left because he was getting no game time at a time when Man Utd had no midfield and he was 19 years old. Gomes only turned 17 3 months ago and Man Utd have many players in his AM/Winger position.

If you think the Mkhi, Mata and Lingard performances have been dross just wait until you see a clueless 17 year old in the team!

Unless these kids are world beaters, get them out the door! Once they develop, buy them back if they're good enough. Would Pogba be half the player if he'd stayed with us? Who knows..

To be fair to Moyes he reportedly took a pretty big interest while here and wasn't impressed with the set-up and was planning big changes. He was also regularly in attendance for the u21s matches.

By everything it doesn't have to mean putting him above club's interests, maybe I put it out wrongly, I meant everything what is in our hands (ex. giving him a nice contract and clear plan and show intent that we want him to stay).

What Mourinho thinks and what I as a fan and longterm supporter doesn't always have to be the same. I agree with most of Jose's decisions but there are some that i don't and never will. Playing mediocre players like Lingard and Darmian who will never be good enough for Manchester United in the expense of younger and players with much bigger potential is on of those decisions.

Meh.. It's a Sun exclusive by Daniel Cutts (very unreliable). The Mail, Mirror and the rest of them are just quoting the Sun story

But the kid should sign a contract nevertheless.

Barca, Juve and now Dortmund after him. Silly stories based on nothing other than he's a very good young player and look at how some are having a meltdown of negativity.

If he were more physically developed he'd have a far greater chance of making the under 23's. But he's in the right place to develop right now, should start to make greater inroad into the first team squad by the time he's 18/19 if he continues to develop.

Same goes for us, we can’t afford to play Gomes in our current situation. Why would he try get a move to BVB? He’ll get his time here

United have a patent on that methodology from the Class of 92 days.

They arent trying to do that, they are signing players on a free to turn them back round and sell them to the same club for tens of millions in a couple of years time.

Its not developing talent, its exploiting young players.

Foden does play for City as a right sided forward/winger.

Gomes was injured for the Euros in the summer and was replaced by Hudson Odoi as a 10. Hudson Odoi went on to be one of the best players at the tournament so Gomes lost his place effectively.

With Dortmund in for him, I can totally see him joining since Mourinho won't give him game time and Dortmund are known to give youngsters a chance to play in the Champions League. Having his England pal (Jadon Sancho) at Dortmund also helps his case. United need to make sure they tie him down to a long term deal. He's one of the best players to come out of the Academy since the time of Pogba and co.

He's just turned 17, Jose gave him his debut. He's no Rooney give it a rest.

Why are we wasting game time on Lingard when we've got Gomes in desperate need for some.
